View Full Version : Beeping sound driving me NUTS!
dimonz4 02-25-2007, 03:17 AM I was wondering if anyone maybe had the same problem or knows whats causing it...
When I start the engine (Z4 3.0 2003) the car starts making beeping sound (the same as when temperature outside gets 32 degrees), but the sound never stops! None of the warning lights are on. I turn off the engine and take out the key, it still doesnt stop for about 3-5 mins. I turn the engine on and it does it again.. This drives me NUTS! I have to pump up the volume when i drive so not to hear this sound.
I already called the dealership and they told me that they have never heard of this problem before.
My car has 51K miles on it and is no longer covered by the manufacturers warranty.. I hope this isnt some kind of reminder from BMW telling me that I need to go spend another 40K on a new one... is it??
Any ideas what is causing the constant beeping sound?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Chaseme 02-25-2007, 02:59 PM Is the trunk or passenger door ajar?
Hope you figure it out.
dimonz4 02-25-2007, 03:21 PM That was the first thing that came to my mind.. but I dont think its the door sensor. the light in the car shuts off as soon as I close the door, but the beeping stays. maybe its a trunk sensor that's gone bad.. but I didnt even open it for a while.
Z3speed4me 02-25-2007, 11:11 PM do you not have your SEATBELT on?????
ClintonM3 02-25-2007, 11:45 PM The temperature beep is normal.
dimonz4 02-26-2007, 02:23 AM do you not have your SEATBELT on?????
it keeps beeping regardless if i fasten or not. the seatbelt warning sound is still not supposed to beep during 30 mins. it has to be something else.
dimonz4 02-26-2007, 02:24 AM The temperature beep is normal.
yeah.. but it is still supposed to stop beeping after 5-7 seconds? isnt it? mine doesnt.
AH HA!
Try this... find the wire for the sensor on the handbrake... Adjust, thank me later.
I had this happen on my e36. There it was just a red light, but the Z4 beeps when it's up as well. Betcha this is the issue. If so, it's a 15 minute fix (14 minutes finding the sensor, 1 minute bending it and testing).

arctic323 02-26-2007, 11:43 PM Same thing happened to me once it kept beeping until I shut the car off for a few minutes and it never came back. I thought it only happened to me. Thankfully it never happened again it would drive me nuts if it kept happening...
killcrap 02-27-2007, 12:02 AM make sure convert top is closed. check handbrake, make sure doors are closed, make sure hood and trunk are closed.

Hmm.. I am definitely gonna check it out. But what's weird is that the break light is NOT on. The car just beeps. I hope this is the cause and it isnt the self-destruction mode timer ))

I hate to tell you that, but that is how it started with my car... It happened before, but then the problem dissaperared. Now it happens more and more often.

Thanks for your input.
I havent opened the top since last fall. I have checked both doors, trunk and hood a numerious number of times.. (( The only thing i havent done is what Pete suggested is try to adjust the handbrake sensor... However, whats really strange is that the car STILL makes that sound even AFTER I take out the key from the ingnition and even lock the doors. You can still hear it from outside. It does it for about 3 mins after you lock the doors. This probably means that the problem is not with the handbrake.

My car is under warranty so next time it happens I will drive it straight to the dealer so they can look at it.

Just wondering if you ever figured this out?

I drive an '03 Z4 and I have the same problem sometimes. Took it to the dealer once while it was beeping and they had no idea what was going on. It only happens about maybe once every 2 months or so, so I don't pay much attention to it.
Ridgeway 08-06-2007, 10:14 PM similar thing happened to my mom's z a couple months back
ended up being a faulty trunk sensor- replaced under warranty & issue resolved
GeorgeT 08-07-2007, 08:33 AM If you haven't opened your top since last fall, it's probalby telling you it wants to breath - so open the top and enjoy the ride.
S04X WIN 08-07-2007, 09:05 AM Same thing happened on my 03 when test driving it in February. Happened only once since then. Stopped after 5 minutes. Hasn't happened since.
Roman 08-07-2007, 11:17 AM This happened to me once a couple of years ago. I wound up disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. It stopped the beeping and has not happened since.

The instrument cluster is bad, had it happen on my 03, this is NOT going to be cheap. PM me if u want my vin as I had this replaced under warranty. I had this and my steering rack replaced and my SA said it was a 3k+ job.
ginz111 08-08-2007, 08:41 AM I have had this happen a couple of times. If you shut the car off and take the key out it stops after about 2 ~ 5 minutes. It seems to me that it always happens when my gas tank is really low. But not sure if its related.
