For the eleventh year in a row, BMW will partner with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in the BMW Ultimate Drive program. As part of the program, fleets of specially marked BMWs travel across the Country to increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. Participants are invited to test drive one of these special BMWs. In return, for every mile these cars are test-driven, BMW donates $1 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to aid in the fight against breast cancer. The test drives are free to the participants. There will also be lots of information on breast cancer awareness, early detection, etc. In addition, a community resident is honored for his or her work in the fight against breast cancer. To participate in the Ultimate Drive for the Cure, call 1-877-4-A-DRIVE or visit BMW’s website, www.bmwusa.com (http://www.bmwusa.com/bmwexperience/EventsandPrograms/UDSK/registration.htm), to make your reservation. Of course, you can also just stop by that day and drive as well, there will be plenty of spots available.

How old do you have to be to test-drive them? :devillook

Probably 18 or 21. :(

18 for most cars, and you can't pre-register if you are under 21. The larger (6 & 7, and possibly X5) I believe, you can't drive unless you are 21.

Seems as though some of these age requirements are fairly arbitrary. Are they based on price or some other actuarial data? Probably just some bullshit.

What about the M5? :devillook

Phat Ham and I did some transporting last year. It was a nice easy drive and they give you a box dinner on the bus ride back.

Society is ageist. You'll be 25 soon enough, and you can drive all the 7ers you want. :D

If it says 21 on the site, it's probably 21...

Weird, because you can go to any dealership when you're 18 and test-drive the car. When you're under 21-25, they'll usually have a salesman come with you.

so i'm guessing this is an all day event?

can you list some highlights of what you do? like go in the morning, go drive to a certain location, then ride a bus back to the dealership?

i'm definitely down for this.

The event goes on all day. You take out cars on a specified route.
The transports are in the evening from one dealer to the next. They shuttle you back to the start.

The cool transports are out in the Mid-west where they fly you back. :)

BMW donates a certain amount of money for every mile each car is driven, so the test drives and the transports count towards that.

The transports are a good time. The guys who run the show "encourage" everyone to obey the speed limit. You just can't pass the lead car, and there's a support van that brings up the rear. The convertible was fun. I really wanted one after that. It was a bout 40 degrees that night but having the top down was great.

When you get to the new dealership, you can wander around and look at the cars in the showroom. Last year there was an M Coupe -- that was back when they were brand new, so it was cool to see. Then they put you on a shuttle bus, and you get a box lunch and a shirt.

One tip if you decided to go -- if you want to drive a cool car, get there early. Hours early. The transport assignments are given out on a first come, first served basis.

I keep signing up for this, and then forgetting about it on the date of the event. I feel shitty for doing this, so I won't sign up this year. I'm sure I will actually remember this time.

As a surprise, BMW NA has brought out 3 Hydrogen 7s for test drives during the Komen Drive for the Cure at Passport, Bel Air, and Annapolis. An engineer from BMW AG rides along to answer questions.

Briefly, the engines currently are governed to 260 hp and a 125 mi. tank range, but much more will be possible in the future (they use that station in Arlington). The only interior difference is a fuel switch button on the steering wheel and fuel filler release, along with a dash indicator.

It starts up in hydrogen mode with a slight delay as the hydrogen pump winds up, like a diesel semi. Fuel mode can be switched over at any time. H2 mode runs slightly rougher, but the power output is supposed to be the same throughout the rev range between modes.

Here's your chance to get a first look, stop by!
