View Full Version : Dealers cannot detail
Calypsocoupe96 02-22-2007, 09:57 PM This car is just under 2 months old and even though the owners had told the dealer when they ordered the car to leave the plastic on it the dealer took it off and "cleaned it"

AlanL 02-22-2007, 11:42 PM This is a lesson I learned long ago and I have come to expect that if the dealer details or washes my car I can expect exactly these results.
I assume that when I pick up my new car I will want to set aside a weekend to rectify the damage and get the finish to where I want for starters as there is no way they will give it to me at a level I consider acceptable.
I go as far out of my way as possible to communicate to the dealer they they never wash my car when it comes in for service. I always detail it before it goes in so they feel no guilt whatever about making my car look "better" and I also leave notes on the dash informing the service personnel please don't wash my car and also tell the service reps the same. I have been known to leave 6 packs of microbrew in the interior with thank you notes to the service folks if they follow my wishes.
They have folks who spend their entire days just doing quickie washes and the equipment they are using has the combined grit of all the cars they washed that day by the end of the shift. If you know they are going to wash your car anyway, always schedule your service appointment for the morning. At least that way you won't get a sandpaper douche on your car's finish if they ignore your requests.
InterBlueZ4M 02-23-2007, 02:21 AM My Interlagos Blue looks the same... I pretty much expected it, since it was on the lot for 5 months before I took it home.
Actually doing the Zaino treatment tomorrow (first time trying it) and have high hopes. (Taking off work to do it...) :D
I can vividly picture some teenage kid washing away, dropping the towel, picking it back up and continuing on... I too request that they don't wash the car.
I love the carpet lines, Alan... I've tried to do that in mine before, but I don't think I have the right attachment.

If your car looks like the *before* pics,
I'd highly recommend getting a good detailer to do a Porter Cable buff.

You can do the PC work yourself, it's good to learn and you don't need to worry, using a PC you would have to try to screw up to do so. Zaino alone won't fix the issues in the photos above. If your paint is similar it really needs prep before the Zaino goes on.
InterBlueZ4M 02-23-2007, 12:40 PM Ok, thanks guys... I don't know anything about this PC buff. Where I would get one, what I'm applying when I use it, (polish?), when I should do it, what steps afterward, etc.
I'm going to try the Zaino first and see what I get... I don't know of anyone in this area I would trust to detail my car, so I may just have to do research. I'm extremely anal, meticulous, so I don't think I would screw anything up.
InterBlueZ4M 02-23-2007, 12:41 PM ...Reading up on it as we speak...
Driven06Z4M 02-23-2007, 02:21 PM NEVER LET THE DEALER CLEAN YOUR CAR!
I have yet to see my car actually look cleaner than the way I brought it to them.
I used to let them wash my Z3 and they scratched the hell out of my paint.
http://www.autogeek.net/ is a good place for information on detailing as well.
InterBlueZ4M 02-23-2007, 11:02 PM Actually... So far so good with the Zaino. I was a little worried by what I saw after the clay bar and wash, but the finish already looks smoking after just one coat of Z5 and Z6. I'm holding a flourescent floor lamp directly over the paint and I can hardly see the swirls anymore after one coat. (Have to look look hard for them over the hood, when I shuddered at the sight before the wax coat)
I'm sure after two more coats and the final Z2 polish, I'll be very happy. Mine must not have been as bad as the images above.
WTF?! did they dry the car with oiled sand paper?
Sorry bro!
Matto ELITE 02-25-2007, 04:56 AM The Detail guys at our franchise do good work, the wash rack is a different story...
Ianbiz 02-25-2007, 05:35 PM omg that car is super sexy.

The lines are easily done even with a scrub brush of the appropriate width. Brush the mat/carpet forward and then using your brush pull it towards the back in a straight line, reversing the nap. Repeat as necessary if you're not happy with your first attempt.
I know what you mean about teenager dropping the cleaning towel.
MP525i 02-26-2007, 10:55 AM excellent job on the detal! that is one clean lookin' coupe.
i hope you followed up with some s100/s21. that stuff will make any dark colored car look "wet."

Calypsocoupe96 02-26-2007, 11:05 AM To get rid of the swirls a Tropi-Care TC-8 Swirl Cutter with an orange pad on the Porter Cable at speed 5 was used.
