I'm still running the M6 TRX wheels on my '86 635 and while i like the look, i realize it's time for a change. The problem is, Most of the stuff on the TireRack site is 17 and 18 inch and the wheels i like the most are only available in an 18 inch size. running a 225 40 18 tire is a frightening thought! Like rubber bands on steel. just how bad will it be? I don't run the car in bad weather. no gravel, no snow/salt, minimal rain risk, so that's not a problem, but i do want a good ride. I really don't plan to track the car, but.. i don't like to loose momentum on the corners either. Can the right tire selection make an 18" wheel feel ok, or should i just keep looking for a 16 or 17" wheel i like?

I'm running 18's on my Euro M6 (stagered M parallels rims and Nittos) and feels great, won't go back to a lower size, besides it fills the wheel well real nice... no extremely noticeable change on the ride... Go for it but make sure the rims are hub centric!

a lot of people say that 16 is the best size, and 17 isnt really any worse, just tires are more pricey, but once you hit 18, some say the ride can get rough. Its because the bigger the wheel, usually the less rubber, so any issues in your suspension are amplified through a bigger wheel, which are usually somewhat absorbed through a higher sidewall tire. You can probably make an 18 feel alright, like javistor said, but if you are already scared, then i would look around for a set of 17s or 16s. Which wheel by the way are you looking at?

I understand what your saying about the rubber bands, and if mine don't work out straight away, i'm taking them off and selling them.Saying that, I did go across country with them non hubcentric, and no problems. Heavy rain in Pa. and they were rock solid, i had to get to 70mph or so for the vibration to plane out!
As for the right tires/wheels for you, get a 16 or 17 and then you won't have to buy it all again if 18's are wrong. (unless you have money coming out of you ass).

So, I put the 18's back on and what a difference. The ride was much harsher with vibrations from the road coming through the steering column even. I'm putting the old wheels back on as i'd like to slowly fix my problems instead of having too, just to accomadate the tires. They look really good as they take up most of the wheel well, but not worth the trouble.

what tire sizes are you runnin with the 18s?
ive picked up some 18s for my 6 as well just waitin for the snow to melt to get the car back on the road and the 18s on.
i've heard on some other boards 18s are good if you got some soft rubber on them but the soft rubber wears quicker? might wanna try it ?

Besides eBay, you could take some pictures of the set and post them in the Wheels for Sale section of this board and other sixer boards. I am half way looking for a set, but would want to see the wheels before making a commitment

Nice style 32's Your car must not be lowered at all because I run 17x8 rims now with Bilstein Sports and Racing Dynamics old school spring and it has basically NO wheel gap at all. Don't think i can use 18x8.5" Mk Motorsport MK2 rims I just got.

As for selling here in the wheels area, Roadfly.org in the wheels area, EBay.com, DTMPower.net for sale area, and there are many other BMW forums you can list them on. Not going to list the literally hundreds of forums. :)

Hey JD. The tires are 235/ 40z R18's made by Falken, (japanese).
The car hasn't been lowered as i live on a dirt road and that caused problems when i bought my first 6 a few years back. It rattled like an old crate and was a 623 or 33 as i recall. Beautiful car though. some guys from Holland working at Colorado Springs bought it and took it home with them.
