View Full Version : Sucking up oil BIG TIME

I'm going to start working on modifying a valve cover and an oil catch can for the breather, looking for ideas.

After a day of autoxing, the rubber boot between the fuel distributor and the throttle body fills up with oil it has sucked out of the head. One time it smoked for 20 mintues before it stopped - thought I had really hurt it that time.:( but it stopped :D

I'm thinking of extending off a passage to the front of the valve cover for the breather, thinking there is less oil on the valve cover in the front. Thoughts?

You would be surprised at how much oil is in the valve cover... I tried two K&N breathers in gromits but the rockers just tossed oil right up the hole onto the inside of the elements and it drained down on the valve cover making a big mess and that was just at idle.

I think the timing chain would throw off a bunch too.

This is my latest try at the problem.

These tubes are over the headbolts instead of the rockers so they should not catch as much flying oil and the 2" raised height should also help. I recently did a similar cover for another enthusiast and I added a couple of baffels to the tubes that should help even more. This design is untested so far but should work well.

Racing you would probably need fittings to a catch can. The aircooled VW guys use screw in fittings that fit right in a 1/2" hole- a couple of those plumbed to a can might be the trick. Bob Breed did something similar, tho not quite as pretty. He lengthend the oil filler neck & welded a fitting perpendicular to it: http://oftenlastracing.com/cover.htm

Has anyone tried using one of the timing chain covers? A 3/4" NPT fitting can fit nicely on the side of the covers (I tapped the lower cover with such a fitting for the turbo's oil drain). Altho, the front & center of the top timing chain cover seems like it could be a good spot....or maybe a more discrete spot on the driver-side of either cover.
