View Full Version : Lack of power?

I'm not sure if it just me, or if it is my car. I've noticed when getting on the highway after leaving school that my car seems to be sluggish getting up to speed. There is a yield when entering the highway, and sometimes you are forced to stop, making it difficult to pull out in traffic. I really push it to get out there sometimes when traffic is heavy.

It seems like there is not much power in the higher rev range. I know my car is not very fast, but once I hit 40-45mph I feel like I hit a wall, and the car just doesn't want to pull as much as it does when first starting off. It feels like I'm towing a boat or something.

Is this just the nature of the car, or am I lacking power up top for some reason?

Same thing here, but its only when I hit 4k RPMs.

Time for a tune up, run some seafoam :)

I've pushed my car easily to over 100, so its got some power, just needs to be tinkered with enough to fix it up right.

verify your timing is set right. Check/set the gap on your plugs, and ohm test your plug wires to make sure the resistance isn't too high.

seafoam wont do shit.

Yeah, I would say it's probably around 4k rpms for me as well. I can't really get much past 80mph, it just takes too long..haha

I've already done all the basic tune up stuff a month or so ago, including a valve adjustment, but my engine is very loud, and sometimes I think I still hear ticking from the valves. (Maybe I'm paranoid) I'll have to look into it.

I think I'll try that seafoam if you say it works.

Its quick, easy, cheap (only like $7-8), it may not give you the most perfect results you are looking for, but I will give it a 95% chance to quiet your engine and reduce the ticking.

Mines fairly loud, but I gave it a tune up and set the idle lower. The insulation between the engine bay and the cabin isn't very good and most likely old, so its really loud in the cabin for me too, at 5k RPM I feel like the car will explode at any given minute.

yeh tune up helps alot, my car had troubles after i just installed the engine, after a little tune it made the car had more power and runs smoother.

yeah i've used it on my car too and i think it helped. it's not like you get an HP gain, but it runs smoother and that probably translates into being better. There are some suggestions in the "seafoam fun" thread.

I'm going to ask on of the techs from work and see if they can check out my car for me. I was going to do it today, but they sent me on a road trip to RI to deliver a customers 650i :D

Well see with me its the other way around. My car when pullin off from a dead stop it feels like a someone is pushing my car up to speed. i dont get any high RPM's or anything. The acceleration is horible. but it does hit 90 really quick when on the highway. ?weird? anythig would help out with me.
