View Full Version : 5 Series wheels on a 6
nobster 02-20-2007, 09:04 PM Gentlemen, It's been a long time scince my last visit but it's more my loss than yours. Anyway, I haven't got rid of the wheels and tires i travelled across country on, (1900 miles), after I bought a gorgeous 89 635csi in NY. and drove it back to CO. The wheels in question were from a E39 I think, (97-03, 5 series) and I rattled the whole way. No one told me about the hubcentric bit, so i spent about $1000 for new tires and used wheels. Now I have the adapters. They're from discount tire and say 74.1mm/72.56mm. My question is, I just put these on my hubs and like magic the wheels are balanced? Also, the tires are235/40Z R18's. Iv'e seen talk of spacers, is there anything I need to know before I do the swap? I just rebuilt the front end, and don't need to kill what was kinda fun.
noah992 02-20-2007, 11:50 PM Hello, I can't believe you drove all that distance, in that situation.
The hub centric ring is to center the wheel on the hub, so as not to move.
Balancing is wheel balancing.
The wheels you had on the car were of a larger hub diameter. This meant in rolling movement the wheel would actually move up and down because it was not centered to the hub.
Now with the ring reducer all will be tighter. Next you must change the upper control arm bushings. for the 6series was never meant to handle a much larger tire wheel set up. If you don't do this your front end will shinny at 45 plus mph. Use milled 750 bushings or Paul Grey's from Austrialia.
e24mpwr 02-21-2007, 12:09 AM The rings should make a dramatic difference. Your wheels may need to be balanced. Be prepared for a harsh ride and any flaws in your possibly tired suspension to be uncovered due the the 18" wheels. 16" to 17" seems to be the recommended range (I run 17" on the M635).
You don't *have* to have the bushings to run wheels that size, but if you have the vibration after rings/alignment/balance, it may help fix it.
Diagnosing E24 suspension shimmies is a dark art...
nobster 02-21-2007, 01:46 AM Thanks for the advice. I'll see what happens as the wheels look so good on her. I just changed the shocks, tie-rods, sway bar arms, and idler arms so hopefully it won't show up something I omited. Saying that, I could do with some money back from them, to pay for the new stuff ,but at least I can see it wasn't money I threw away buying all new wheels and tires. Also thanks for the explanation of the rings, I had the tires balanced twice on the journey 'cos no one told me about the hubcentric deal, though the guy did tell me about the european wheel and tire sizing and how expensive it'd be to get new tires. I've had the alignment done so at the first sign of trouble, they're off. I need one of these forums for the Triumph, now that's a project! Thanks gents.

LOL - I have a buddy who just picked up his Dad's TR6, so if you find one, please PM me. He's going to need the help...:cool
nobster 02-21-2007, 10:37 PM I've had my TR6 for a while now. Long before the 6er. It took me many years to get to the point of driving it with some confidence i'd get back again! If you need any help or advice I can try to shed some light. 970 376 4553. I've got mine to a point of needing much more help, but it runs. I'ts like a little go-kart. One of the best things I ever did was put Weber's on it, so if he needs Stromberg's, I can help. Putting the wheels on Sasha tonight. We'll see !
