View Full Version : CRAZY idea on programming keys to close windows..

on my old W203 mercedes (last design C class) there were things that were available in the car that could not be accessed. For example, in the US locking the car, the lights would blink - but setting the car's ECU to think it was in a specific country, the beep acknowledgement would sound as well.

So this got me thinking... in Europe, cars can have their windows opened AND closed from the remote (hold the unlock or lock button respectively). In the colonies - because more lawyers came on the Mayflower than stayed in Europe - we can only use the open functionality.

What if we programmed the Bimmer's ECU to think it's in the UK? Or if that confuses it because of left/right drive issues - another English speaking country that has these features?

Who could do this programming? Is this a dealer accessible setting - or does it need to be done at the factory?!

Spread the word - perhaps we can get a freebie feature!

It's been discussed before - apparently the US uses a different ECU altogether. According to the dealers consulted, there's no option to enable for this feature. I'd think the only case where this might happen is a car that was ordered with European Delivery, since you might need (or at least can use) the features while overseas.

You are refering to car and key memory programming which can only be done at the dealer. Sorry to say the convenience closing feature is not available on US vehicles. I could check at training tomorrow but I'm almost positive that you can't do it.

Rusty if you're a bimmer mechanic and are going to be in training - YES please do. Even if it's an option but one that most won't set. I'd love to hear about it! Maybe we'll all get lucky and find a nice person like you to help locally!

My E38 had the ability to roll down the windows with the key, all you had to do was push and hold the unlock button and all 4 windows would roll down. I absolutely loved it when it was hot outside. ;)

Your Z4 will roll the windows down from the remote. The 2004+ cars will roll the windows down and lower the top via remote.
