View Full Version : Taping Bumper for highway trip?
ckandes1 02-19-2007, 10:11 PM I'm picking up a BMW this weekend (found it here in bf.c classifieds!!!). There's going to be alot of driving inolved, I'm basically doing a tour of Georgia and Florida, i'll rack up probably 1800 miles or so.
I want to cover up the bumper and side-mirrors to avoid getting rockchips on these nasty FL highways. how have you guys done this and what has worked best for you? Is simply blue painter's tape a good way to go?
abrcrombe 02-19-2007, 10:22 PM Blue painter's tape ftw

LMAO, that's golden!!! Awesome car too, I'm a huge Audi fan. Just sold my dark blue '00 A4 1.8T 5spd to hop into this '01 Z3 Coupe. Nice choice of cars dude, and awesome picture. Seeing a badass B5 S4 taped up like that really assures me that the tape is safe too :D
by the way, how long did that take and how many rolls if you recall? I'll probably get the whole bumper, 1/3 of the hood, and a good part of the fenders too.
M Power623 02-19-2007, 11:01 PM  how many rolls of tape did u use??

you haven't seen that thread. the duo (from another forum) even added wood siding to the car.
abrcrombe 02-19-2007, 11:19 PM Oh, that isn't my car. Pretty much any question about painter's tape it comes up.

palomino 02-20-2007, 05:12 AM i have a vinyl front end cover for long trips, but i cant bear to have it actually touch the car, so it gets a painter's tape liner first. i feel that the vinyl cover cushions rocks better, even though the tape would protect from scratches anyways.
this is from a trip up & down california from LA to SF and back.
think about airflow when you apply the tape. if you dont layer the tape correctly, it will peel off in the wind while youre driving.

ckandes1 02-20-2007, 11:29 AM smart thinking. I put a front bra on my audi a4 for one trip and i regret it. My hood had a nice little scuff line all the way across from it. luckily its not very visible, but still
thanks for the info. The layering of the tape didnt occur to me but it makes a ton of sense
E36DJ 02-20-2007, 04:04 PM Oh man, you forgot the pillars! :nono
Big place for rock chips.
My friends and I do this with our E36 M3s when we go to the beach every summer / spring. Uses a little less than a roll of the good stuff (~$7 3M)
abrcrombe 02-20-2007, 06:03 PM Damn the tape with a bra over it is a really good idea!!

it looks absolutely ridiculous, but it gets the job done. :stickoutt
Oh man, you forgot the pillars! :nono
how do you get the tape not to peel while driving?
z51 Vette 02-21-2007, 02:35 AM Blue painter's tape ftw
That is so awsome. I tape up the front anytime I have road trips. If it's a new car with good paint up front get it clear brawed before it's to late.
E36DJ 02-21-2007, 01:24 PM I've never had issues with it coming off.. like someone said, if you layer it correctly (top to bottom.. ) you seal the front edge with each strip, kinda like the way a bird's feathers layer.
But for the pillars I just stick one strip up the sides - never had a problem with it.
Damn all this talk is really reminding me of getting my car ready for the Ocean City car show weekend / road trip each year. I can't wait!
Halston Pitman 02-21-2007, 02:43 PM It can be done:

Works like a charm. From Chicago to Atlanta when I was moving back home! I just pulled off all the bugs and grime and it was great! I did do the mirrors before I left.
Halston Pitman 02-21-2007, 02:47 PM And yes you layer it and cover edges. It survived from Chicago To Atlanta. No rain though. I don't know what rain would do.
generic 02-21-2007, 03:59 PM it works but...
www.pftfilms.com why not have it on there 100% of the time?
seems people drag there bumpers on the ground and still have it practically new with this stuff.
