Hey everyone. Im in the process of restoring my 535i and im building my own custom exhaust from the headers back. I have a pretty good welding background, so thats not my concern. I just wanted to know about what ive been reading. What my original plan was to use a singe collector from the two headers and use a single 2.5" pipe and cat and then go back to a single round muffler in the back to which i will later decide on. My question is in two parts 1.) would you agree that a single 2.5" pipe is best as opposed to dual smaller pipes, and 2.) Ive heard that using two mufflers, or another muffler as a resonator like the stock setup is best or to just stick with a good muffler out back, I DONT want a really loud exhaust, but it def needs to be pronounced in volume. I am not asking about tone, i know that all depends on muffler choice and i can decide on that later. Thanks for the info.

you need either a resonator or something, as a single 2.5" pipe with out a cat or resonator is loud, gloriously, beautifully, makes-you-need-clean-pants loud.
I miss my E28 :(

I was def planning on using a HF cat with the set up. maybe i forgot to mention that. but also, i just wanted to know if i def needed a resonator or could i just use a good muffler only.

with the cat... hard to tell... the larger the muffler, the less likely... with the E28 using a single pipe, there are some great options from magnaflow, get one that is longer as opposed to shorter and pair it with a HF Cat and you SHOULD have a nice strong rumble that doesn't deafen you...
then again... I used to run mine open at the collector "just because" :D:D:D

I did the same thing on my 85 535. I used a magnaflow dual inlet and single 2.5" outlet resonator under the car where the cat used to be. Tried it first with a LARGE round, straight through magnaflow out back and it was LOUD. Even if you're running a cat you will definately want a resonator after it. I ended putting a 3 chamber round muffler from autozone at the back and it's quiet yet still had a nice tone in the upper rpm range. Simply stated, a chambered muffler and resonator is the only way to keep it civilized. I believe a chambered muffler by itself will leave you with extra cackle. Or you could put a turbo on it...
