Hello I recently purchased an 84 528e (gas, standard) with 355,000km's on it. I am totally amazed at the power the straight six has. And the fuel economy is still up around 8.2 litres/ 100km or around 40mpg. I am really impressed with the car. The previous owner neglected a few things that i am trying to get working. The power sunroof is now fixed, it was a broken cable. Two fuel leaks have been fixed by tightening hose clamps. The locking gas cap has been repaired. The 2 nicad batts in the dash were replaced with new NiMH. Various bulbs were replaced and the stereo speakers were rewired properly and a new stereo installed. I still have several outstanding problems however:
The power antenna needs a need extending part with the nylon cable attached. Is this available to be purchased somewhere as a separate part or do i have to buy the whole motor and housing and all??
The car still has an erratic idle. Ive checked the mass airflow sensor, the TPS sensor, the Idle modulator, the cap and rotor, these components appear to be fine. Next i am going to put a gauge on the fuel rail and check the stability of the pressure to make sure the regulator is OK. Any other suggestions for this problem??? Is this a common problem for these cars. I am hoping the ECM is working OK.. is their a separate ECM just for the idle in behind the glove box or does the main ECM do everything??
Lastly, can i purchase an aftermarket gizmo to reset the dash attention light? Will it also allow me to read codes if there is such a device or will it only reset the light. Maybe i could just short some of the pins together to accomplish the same thing?
Any Ideas??
