Coming back from Toronto, cruising at an average of 70.5 mph with the top up, I averaged 30.1 mpg.

Last weekend, same speed, highway cruising, but with the top down : 24.7 mpg. I had my gf and the kids with me, if that makes a big difference (roughly 220 extra pounds).

Thought I'd share.

Well, I'm not that surprised. Dropping the top creates a huge vacuum behind the windshield. Shows how bad it is.

I believe someone once made some tests regarding A/C use vs. having the windows down, and the results were the same :

Windows up = good mileage
A/C = worse mileage
Windows down = worse than windows up, but similar to A/C

Isn't this the part where someone says, "If you're worried about the gas mileage, you should get a Hon-duh!":D

I never took the time to run a full tank of gas with the top up to figure out the difference. Thanks for sharing. For me, the gas mileage measurements went something like this:

Driving around town: 19 MPG
Freeway driving to an autox, the autox iteself and the drive back home: 24 MPG
So now I autox as often as I can to get better mileage.:redspot

I did find that if I was really careful with the accelerator to the point of being annoying to other drivers on the road, I could get 21 MPG around town.

Yep Drive as if you have an egg under your feet. Mileage improves significantly.

It's the same as when you have a pickup truck. I see guys driving around all the time with their tailgates down, thinking they are improving their fuel economy, when , in fact, they would get better mileage with the tailgate up. With the tailgate down a large vacuum is created in the bed of the truck causing drag, with it up air just flows right over the top and bed of the truck.

How do I mount a tailgate on my 'vert ... ?

I'm tempted to doubt that. With tailgate down, you have a vaccuum, but the tailgate up creates both a vaccum and a drag (I think).

Huh... an 8 hour Toronto-Québec drive isn't exactly eventful...

beside, I had just gotten my new engine, I was not gonna risk moneyshifting it again.

:lol

If you want a good laugh, reset the OBC consumption just before an autox run. I am not sure what the actual mileage is as the number bottoms out at 6MPG.

Well you simply drive UNDER a monster tire pickup truck just one time and...

oh yeah you'll also have a hardtop 'vert as well after that although it won't exactly be OEM. Probably won't do much to improve the MPG either. :stickoutt

My driving is about 1/2 city 1/2 highway. (All estimates are IIRC) Top up I can average about 23 mpg. Top down for the whole tank (yes it's been done several times) I average about 18 mpg.
