My car came with the built-in BMW phone from 1995. I'm trying to decide if I should keep it and have it connected to my current cell number or if I should just remove it and use the space for something else. Anyone have any opinions or good options?

Why would you want to use a 12 year old cell phone? The technology has changed drastically since then.

Toss it, get a phone with bluetooth and voice dialing, and add a bluetooth headset.

Works perfectly for me.

It actually won't even work. It's analog, although it may dial 911.

Toss it.

A lot of the bmws came fitted with a motorola V50 that had BMW come as at the logo on it, these fetch good money on ebay as I sold one recently.

According to Verizon, it's federally illegal to have that phone hooked up to work, since it lacks GPS capability that would let the government know where you're calling from. Not to say it can't be done, but good luck finding someone to do it.

I think you should toss it.

Ok, so tossing it sounds like the best idea.. What do I use to fill up the huge hole where it was?

the unit will leave a small area that will hold change, pens, ect. you can also find a bmw casette holder that they made for there.

Ok, so it won't just be a big hole cut into my console?

Sounds like the one I have. Ebay it will go.. If I get anything for it I'll be happy.

I think I'll leave the antenna cable alone, I can see it sticking out the headliner by the rear window but I'm sure I can just tuck it in out of sight.

i've seen a writeup somewhere. the guy adapted it. He plugged his newer cellphone in and it used the old phone to call through the new phone.. pretty cool.

Too late, I just pulled it out and cut the wires.. Thanks anyway..

There is a nice little pocket for change and other stuff that I was missing. Only problem is, now there is a 1 inch square hole in the console where the wires went for the phone that I need to patch some how. It's not really in a spot that you would notice but I'm sure stuff will work it's way into that hole and under the console if I don't patch it. I'll figure something out that looks clean.

Get rid of it and replace it with cup holders. I am kinda sad that my 540i doesnt have cup holders :( I just find myself putting the cups and stuff in the phone slot and hoping they dont fall when im drifting around corners and stuff. ... lol (obviously I don't drift around corners!)

Ok.. Pulled up an old post to see who still wants it. I'm sick of looking at it and I don't feel like listing it on e-bay.

Free BMW phone to the first one to respond. You pay shipping of course.

who ever you talked to at Verizon is a liar. None of the phones I have bought in the last 5 years have GPS. they just make more money using teh same bandwuidth with multiple digital phones instead of One analogue

Why would you want to use a 12 year old cell phone? The technology has changed drastically since then.

If you can get a provider to sell you analog service (they are hard to find) you will find the older technology gives you more power (when they are built into the car) resulting in more coverage in fringe areas. The drawback is they can easily be cloned, and analog service is going to end in 2008.
