View Full Version : Snow!!
Sammyzuko 02-14-2007, 08:29 AM I tried to drive to work this morning on my all-season tires. Got stuck just outside my garage and after 20min of rocking back and forth, finally managed to get back in the garage. Threw on my Wintersport M2's and rolled out onto the street with a smile on my face. Man was it fun to drive in the white stuff with my snow tires. I went up Arlington Ridge Road(which was unplowed) with ease. It was fun seeing people in SUVs looking down at me like "how is he moving in this deep stuff". My front end was doing a little plowing, but not enough to damage anything.
Anyone else have to drive this morning?
calvin d 02-14-2007, 08:39 AM I rolled out around 7 this morning and came to work. I caught hell getting out of my subdivision. I should of loaded my trunk up to get a little more traction. Once I got onto 495, the roads were a lot better and I didn't have any more problems.
ChosenGSR 02-14-2007, 09:26 AM I've driving two Bimmers on wintersport M3s and they are unstoppable. The M3 is even that much better than the 330 I used to have due to the rear LSD. Tires make or break a good winter car. If I was a betting man I would say winter tires are at least a few notches above having AWD.
camiloteram 02-14-2007, 10:11 AM 235/40/17 semi bald summer tires. :(
I'm car-less for now.
easport 02-14-2007, 10:29 AM Left my 330 Ci at home (I have all season on) and drove my wife's CRV. I had a hard time driving my bimmer back home last night. I am getting some snow tires for next winter.
Phat Ham 02-14-2007, 11:09 AM Tires make or break a good winter car. If I was a betting man I would say winter tires are at least a few notches above having AWD. +1. I have Wintersport M2s on my m3 and some crap all seasons on my 4Runner. I feel MUCH more confident in the m3 in the white stuff. The only reason I drive the 4Runner is because I'm too worried about getting t-boned by some idiot in a suburban.
Matsui 02-14-2007, 11:28 AM Left at 6:15 for work this morning in my E38 with all season MXV4s.
Took some inner routes and streets all the way. All in all, not a bad commute and I didn't get stuck in the snow even though none of the roads were plowed at that time.
I think in snow driving, more credit goes to driver than vehicle type or what tires you have on. :cool
SicNA94teggsr 02-14-2007, 11:33 AM Damn, sounds like you all had some fun this morn. My drive home from work last night seemed kind of sketchey. I guess now im going to go out and look for some snow to play in.
mlytle 02-14-2007, 11:39 AM my wife motored off to work in her blizzak equiped rwd e46 325it. no problems at all on the unplowed roads. my m3 with summer tires stayed in the garage and happily waved goodbye as i headed to work in the 4x4 diesel truck...;)
side roads were fun. kinda like an auto-x... weaving around all the stuck inept folks trying to figure out why their summer tire equiped cars were going nowhere 20ft from their driveway. duh.
lax01 02-14-2007, 11:54 AM 255/35/19s Contisports on the M....its resting comfortably in the garage obviously...
The 960 wagon has all seasons, but I don't even want to test them in this amount of snow
NHbmw325I 02-14-2007, 12:23 PM I drove my VW pretty fun, no problems as long as you dont try to give it more than a very small amount of gas.
Mad Machine 02-14-2007, 01:28 PM we didn't get snow here.. but I did have a BMWsicle this morning. Car was covered in an inch of ice from top to bottom. It was all the excuse I needed not to go to work this morning
motorwerks 02-14-2007, 01:53 PM i've been driving around all day. granted the bimmer is in the body shop so, no fun, and exciting sliding around in the bimmer stories. my cargo van is great in the snow. i laughed a bit today when i was going up a hill, and i looked in my rear view. the truck the was following me was sliding backwards down the hill.
1ton cargo van w/ mud&snow tires> truck with no weight in the back.
Ahmed303 02-14-2007, 04:02 PM No problem with my Daily Driver (AWD).
cannan 02-14-2007, 05:22 PM Didn't even bother...just worked from home :devillook
SicNA94teggsr 02-14-2007, 07:57 PM I had a bit of fun, still even with the vredzzzz it doesnt even compare to my old 91 dx civic. (hookup and speed vs. drifting fun) I need to get that thing back on the road. :)
BimmaBwoy 02-14-2007, 08:28 PM I got up this morning... took me 45 mins to clean off my ride from all the ice.. Decided to take a trip out to the gas station to see how bad the streets were. Plowed some snow b/c of my lip, fishtailed a bit even with DSC turned on, came back into my parking lot and got stuck up a 15-25deg incline. Parking lot was soooo icy that I couldnt' make it up. Had to turn off DSC, put my wife in the car to drive, and get a hand to push the car out of icy sections and then parked it right back in it's originaly parking spot(hope I didn't damage my tranny). Called my boss and said hell no I'm not coming to work b/c I'm not going to do this when I get back home. Wish I took pics...
funfgang 02-14-2007, 08:33 PM Do you think I had any fun????
:devillook
ComBIRDable 02-14-2007, 09:46 PM M3 stayed in its parking spot. I have Blizzak WS-50's on my Honda Accord. Those tires are amazing. Now I'm just waiting for the ice to melt so I can drive the M3 again. :(

I would say yes without a doubt... lol.... Or at least I would if I had either of your cars.
NHbmw325I 02-14-2007, 10:50 PM kern was your street plowed at all?
My neighborhood had a bunch of ice, but I wasn't driving my BMW. It doesn't really run right now haha.

WOW!!! snow tires on a Honda??? I used to school SUV's in my dx on all seasons... Id love to try some snows!!!
NHbmw325I 02-14-2007, 11:54 PM yeah I wonder what my VW would be like on winters, only gets stuck for a second or so in snow banks haha
SicNA94teggsr 02-15-2007, 12:20 AM yeah I wonder what my VW would be like on winters, only gets stuck for a second or so in snow banks haha
FWDFTMFW:buttrock My dad called me a few years ago in that blizzard to remind me not to go out cause Gov. Schaeffer called a snow emergency.... Needless to say, I was already out for a beer run, with only 4x4 trucks out (and blazers too, not SUV's)
GTI would be sweet.... when in doubt, power out!!!:alright :alright :redspot :buttrock
upperguy 02-15-2007, 01:04 AM I was planning on letting the M3 sit but tossed on my Pzero nero M&S' when it first started snowing just in case. I couldn't get my beater ranger out of the driveway so I called out of work with plans to sleep through the day. Then 3 hours later I got a call from my boss saying he was coming to pick me up.
I just got back from Wawa in the M3(truck is still stuck, great winter beater eh?) and I didn't have any problems, the rear only kicked out when I made it. This is with the supercharger too;)
Sammyzuko 02-15-2007, 07:58 AM It's a different mess now that the snow is rock hard. I went to a party last night and parked on the street in some unplowed snow. When I went to leave at 1am the snow was so hard and slick that my car couldn't move. I had to have the girl I was giving a ride home drive while me and another guy pushed. PITA.
Be careful of snow chunks that make their way onto the road. This is what happened a few years ago when a few chunks of snow were in the middle of an otherwise clear road....

GoBLue 02-15-2007, 08:39 AM ^Ugh, that sucks. I'll be driving my Jeep until the snow melts, most of the side-streets in our area are still unplowed
Teuton 02-15-2007, 09:21 AM I didn't really have any issues, the jeep did fine with the unplowed roads in the area (even with all seasons). Clearing my drive way was a different story. It only took 3 hours and 45 minutes with a gas powered self propelled snow blower. The ice was really tough.
It was fun to watch my neighbor try to drive his minivan and prius out of his driveway to get stuck within 10 ft of getting on the street.

RamGoat 02-15-2007, 06:59 PM just put some brand new all seasons wrapped around some 17x8.5 m classics on friday....well equpied for the storm....i have a lip on my 325 so it was sort of plowing through everything but the 8.5s tore through it all...
RamGoat 02-15-2007, 07:00 PM my segway had to stay in the garage though...:(
camiloteram 02-15-2007, 07:11 PM beater m3 bumper is for the win when the snow turns into ice.

I feel that 100%. I hit a ice chunk on the road somewhere in the GF's '07 Scion TC and the bumper looks about the same. The FWD did well in the snow / ice, but now I need to find a bodyshop :mad
SicNA94teggsr 02-25-2007, 01:31 PM Just got my boots on, where we gonna go play. Im going to go scout out the roads!!!
calvin d 02-25-2007, 01:36 PM I don't recall that we were supposed to get this much snow! I was under the impression that it was going to be a small quick storm. it doesn't seem like it's going to stop.

Can't wait to play in it once I get out of work at 3pm. I'll be sure to spin a few doughnuts in the street behind our office. Which car are you taking out?

Sadly the Teg is out of commision:( , not that I would take it out in this. IM taking the 3rod out, with my Vredddzzzzz.
Does anyone want to go get some Pho or sushies?
1996 328ti 02-25-2007, 04:04 PM It was supposed to be a little snow then rain.
Around 9:00 am I had to bring my ti to the shop for some work tomorrow.
Bold Toyo T1s don't do very well. The rear slide out a few times on my 5? mile drive. But it was fun watching an Xterra (?) unable to climb a small hill into our development and the Mini with Vredsteins sailed right by him.
Then I had to do some shoveling so I could load some RA1s into the car to have them flipped at Radial tomorrow. I hope it warms up by Friday for my trip down to VIR.

In Potomac...=M3 in the garage
Mad Machine 02-25-2007, 05:38 PM Last year, when I still had my Tiburon (great cars in the snow) I was coming home from work at 5am and the plows had cleared the snow ACROSS the main road, leaving a foot and a half high wall all the way across the road. Being on snow, hitting the brakes only makes you slide.. so I hit it square on, broke both fogs, and pulled the bolts that held the sides of the bumper tight to the fenders. Fun times
gsrsdn 02-25-2007, 06:05 PM Im running M2s on my car right now and it still feels unsafe in the snow. Ive spun out twice (thank god for grass medians) in the last two storms that came through... anyone have any winter driving tips? Will a lower tire pressure help?

Will a lower tire pressure help? slow down. easy on the throttle, easy on the brakes, easy with steering inputs.
How much tread is left on your tires? On snow (and in the rain for that matter), more tread is better. If your tread is wearing low your tires aren't nearly as effective in the snow.

When in doubt power out!!! Remember your drift poses! if that doesnt work, buy a civic:devillook

My M2's are on their 5th season and they still work miracles in the snow. You just have to be cautious when giving any steering/gas input and pay attention to what you're driving on(ie snow, slush, ice). I've driven in snow all my life, but the M3 can be a little nerve racking because you literally feel every little change in terrain. Plus you know that if you happen to bump a curb or snowbank, you're beautiful ride will be damaged. Just take it easy. I am very cautious, but with my M2's no one seems to be able to keep up with me in the snow.

what sorta roads have you been driving on in DE?
I was out just now for like an hr, but was in my manual vw, not my 325. If you dont accelerate that hard, dont hit the breaks when you are sliding a bit you should be good. I also just try and downshift to slow down. I guess M3's are harder to drive in the snow than a 325 though.
gsrsdn 02-25-2007, 08:34 PM im on about 70% tread so that shouldnt be an issue...
I was on rt 1 when we had that bad ice storm a few weeks ago and was doing about 30 going straight and I lifted off the throttle for a sec and the back end just shot around like a rocket...
I also spun out on 273 in light snow doing about 20 going up a slight grade..
the tires kick ass in rain, but im dissapointed in their snow performance
I guess I just have to steal the wifey's suv on snow days...
NHbmw325I 02-25-2007, 09:14 PM hmm thats really weird..

NHbmw325I 02-25-2007, 10:18 PM I still haven't seen your M3 driving around, but I always see the one by pats on kirkwood hwy lol
geftman 02-25-2007, 11:00 PM i got stuck going up the hill
tunred traction control off

I was going to work this morning and slid sideways all the way down a hill. I ended up spinning out at the bottom of the hill, luckily didn't hit anything. There was a cop right behind me that just shrugged and drove past.
SpeedTheory 02-25-2007, 11:52 PM No snow here in FL, tons of rain though. :rolleyes
LuvMy328is 02-26-2007, 01:38 AM Blizzaks! I drove 35 miles to work last tuesday in that snowy, sleety mess. I had 0 problems, then i got to work and there is a S shaped riveway at about 30 degrees incline. I hit the top and floored it to check out my traction, i pulled in to the parking lot sideways :buttrock Open diff + no ASC =
But yea, Blizzaks rule!!!!
