View Full Version : hi any one with a mech tech turbo
1carnut 02-14-2007, 01:10 AM hi I'm considering this mech tech kit ,i didn't even know they made a smog legal turbo for us in california so I'm excited.
so options dinan supercharger smog legal 6,999 plus tax over 7,000.dinan has no inter-cooler supposed to be 340 horse power 100 over stock.mech tech has a inter-cooler and supposed to be 100 horse power over stock cost 5,290.Turbos sound bitch'n and kit is capable of 500 horses.
The one thing im not sure is the mech tech kit comes with no software .I dont see why i couldn't buy dinan software smog legal stage 2,4,or 5.probally run 8 psi always upgrade inter-cooler if it can be.im looking for 380 to 400 some day around 290 302 at wheels i think would fine.if the mech tech kit does what it says its a start. i love the look of a inter-cooler sitting in the grill and the sweet sound of a turbo waste gate.
I have read some posts about mech tech they are all older posts.the turbo and parts seem good its the non software issue.mech tech says you dont need software on the stage one kit and if a check engine light doesn't come on and you get 100 horses that sounds cool to me.Anyone have sound clips of this kit or dyno numbers
thanks

T N D 02-14-2007, 01:41 AM mechtech is perfect...... for blowing up motors :rolleyes
nickdrivesm3 02-14-2007, 02:03 AM want mechtech eh?
well...have fun with that one :alright
highboostingm3 02-14-2007, 02:07 AM Where the hell did you hear about Mechtech? Are they still advertising the BMW turbo kit?
Tell Jim I said hi.
Oh and tell him I want my Aerodyne turbo back!
1carnut 02-14-2007, 02:18 AM any one of you guys actually have a mech tech turbo or a friend. all i see is the same guy that had the blown engine problem it sounds like his mechanic did it with tuning. How did they get smog legal in all 50 states if there kit is junk.theres a lot of kits out there and only 2 smog legal in 50 states .i do see the dyno numbers arent measuring up .I just wonder is there any positive feedback with anyone with it on there car now?it has a turbotronic turbo isnt that okay .i just dont get it why is it junk?manifold looks good has a decent turbo.it has a inter-cooler .it just doesnt have tuning but has a carb # and is ob2 complaint.why cant i just get tuning for 500.00 and get more horses at-least 350 and it runs good and safe?
I see all these kits on ebay for 600-1000 dollars now i know that has to be crap .Its really hard to get carb certified in california vf has been trying for years .
highboostingm3 02-14-2007, 02:27 AM The hardware is also set up wrong and that is partly why the tuning doesn't work well.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS KIT OR YOU WILL BE SORRY! :nono
T N D 02-14-2007, 02:28 AM i have a m3 that used to be a mechtech kit. the previous owner blew the motor once already and had it rebuilt. even with a revamped mechtech kit, there are still several problems. to name a few, the intercooler is mounted poorly and very little is actually exposed to open air, the intercooler piping is too restrictive, and the aerocharger unit has problems with boost spikes. this is of course excluding all the problems the previous owner of my car has encountered. furthermore, the kit has no tuning because the their tune used to blow the motor up. all that being said, Eric BMW has a still running mechtech kit with an AA tune. unless you have an extremely good reason for wanting to use the mechtech kit, i'd stay very far away from it.
1carnut 02-14-2007, 02:40 AM are the engines blowing because people are straying from the stock set up of kit?the engines blow because of to much boost right over detonate.Iam not trying to be stubborn .I just want to know why its so bad and how they got 50 state legal.
okay
manifold is cast iron thats good
has inter-cooler thats good
ow screw it i im sick of trying to convince myself i was so excited
my bubble is bursted.
T N D 02-14-2007, 02:54 AM an intercooler is good, their intercooler is lame. they blew up either form detonation or from running extremely lean, or both. i believe Eric BMW runs AA alcohol injection as a safety measure.
just get another turbokit and put a dinan carb sticker on your car.

the guy got the best answers already. if he wants to be stubborn now it is his own fault.
meseetree 02-14-2007, 11:18 AM okay, I guess I"ll chime in here.
I DO have a mechtech turbo kit on my car.
does it run great? YES absolutly.
but that is because it blew the motor first...... so there went 9 grand for a rebuild. and then another 1500 on spent on turbo adjustments to get it to run well enough to not blow the motor.
I still don't trust the thing.
the kit is a POS I know first hand. the turbo is cool because it is a sealed unit but hard to push anymore power out of them. The intercooler does work fine, it's just not huge and look the coolest, but performs efficient enough.
oh yeah as far as horsepower, I am planning on going to the dyno soon very very very soon but I can't get off on a saturday.
I would be very surprised if i was making 250-270 at the wheels.
so yes this kit sucks. mine runs great but only after changing the settings. I'm planning on redoing it in a little while. you can buy my kit for 1800 shipped if you really want it.
if you want to know anything else just ask me.

If you are that ignorant, then I will go ahead and tell you now since you are probably going to purchase this kit.
I told you so. :embarrasm

You know what would be sweet? Is if Jim sold him a kit with my used Aerodyne that is probably still sitting on the shelf from 2002.
I saw Jim with his family one night at a sushi restaurant in Solana Beach like a month ago. We locked eyes as if daggers were in them. He looked away and I walked past him. I didn't want to say anything rude in front of his family so I just went in the restaurant. How random though.
Another time even more random was when I saw him and his family at the airport on the big island of Hawaii. What the hell are the odds on that? :eek2
All I could think of both of those times were all the smucks he screwed over to pay for that dinner and that Hawaiian vacation! :mad :censored: :angryfire :madflame:
diegom6 02-14-2007, 09:27 PM ^^^Damn! That's a small world and bad luck!
Cam knows what he is talking baout, don't buy that kit.

When it gets in a magazine, when it goes to Bimmerfest and when it goes down the strip...he will hear about it.
The deep burn that'll be in his brain knowing that he had a chance to be a part of it and blew it will make me happy. :smoke3

Well when I took the car to the next tuner Chris who made that nice custom top mount GT30R Haltech system(right after Mechtech had to rebuild my motor cause they blew it on the dyno). Jim at Mechtech made fun of him saying he was just a kid and didn't know anything.
"Guy made me 425whp/477wtq on a Mustang Dyno Jimbo! Car won a 1st place trophy at Dubfest in L.A. Jimmmmmmmmbo!"

can't hurt to ask -- they might want to see the turbo to verify it is still the same unit....
highboostingm3 02-16-2007, 03:32 PM can't hurt to ask -- they might want to see the turbo to verify it is still the same unit....
I think that he is asking if Mechtech will give him a new sticker.
The sticker is only if you get pulled over cause a cop won't know how the setup is supposed to be and probably let you go on it. If you are modified beyond the stock system and want to get a smog check, then a smog ref probably would check to see the system is the way it originally was supposed to be. :dunno

depends on the ref, some double check on what the sticker actually is and some dont care
