View Full Version : Me Vs. Modded S2K on the Freeway

Just the facts, no story. Guy was nice, then a prick, then scared, then nice:D

His Car: CF hood, larger than stock exhaust, different engine note than the other S2Ks that I've been able to beat (not handily just beat), his fat ass.

My Car: M3/4 empty (3 gallons) tank, 40-60lbs of tools in the trunk, car seat, my fat ass.

Stage - no passengers, no one in left lane for 3 miles, lined up almost side by side.

I was at his door when he went from 6th or 5th to what seemed like 4th, because I only heard him shift two more times.

He punched it hard and got a bit of a lead, full car length and pulled ahead of me about 5 foot, I was stupid and just pressed even harder. I was in 4th and shifted 6300 I think, before limiter. Probably close to it.

We stopped time, he wasn't pulling away and neither was I going up and kissing his bumper:)

Then, something funny happened, as I was crossing the 130 mark, I began to real him in and steadily. You could see concern in the rear view mirror, he was surprised. Then I got an f'ing phone call and had to pull away.

A'hole did the ricer hazard flash - which means that he thought he won, but whatever. As I was driving by him just 1/2 mile later as he was exiting the freeway, he waved in a friendly manner:dunno

So, I don't know, maybe he thought that the hazard flash was part of "ok, we're done, that was fun" or an acknowledgement of a good race. No clue.

Anyways, here's what I learned.

If those cars are modded as his clearly was, then if you have 100K on your M3/4, get a few more mods and get rid of the limiter:D

Well, you can't really "mod" an S2000 too much, they're pretty maxxed out right from the box.

My uncle just bought one with intake, exhaust and chip. I've driven a stock one, then I drove his, they were indentical as far acceleration and top end...I mean there was a better sound to it, but no big jump as far as numbers or anything like that.

They say a blower on an S2000 only takes about .2 off the 1/4 mile time, I guess you can take it from there.....

Nice run though....

wouldn't a CF hood save 30lbs;)

I heard that weight reduction is the best modding that you can do on those cars. :D

You guys are right and my uncle found this out after he purchased the car.

The only "real true" mod you can do to the car to help as far as performance is weight reduction, other than that, you're in the hole. Like I said, the sound will be better, but that's about it....

It's still a great car if you revv the shit out of it.....and it looks rather nice.

Were you behind him drafting? That would account for the gaining at speed. As a for instance, I stuggled to hit 105 down the front straight in a rented Neon ACR at SIR -- but with a pack of 5 other ACR's in front of me I managed to see 125 before turn in to 1.

Not at all.

B.S. Don't believe the magazines. There are a few choices when going FI with the S2000 -- but both the Blower and Turbo kits make the car a low 13 second ride with high 12's not too far off, traction, exhaust, intake etc.

Personally, I would put my money on an S2000 to pull on a stock E36M3 above 100 -- but that's just me and I am not willing to prove it out ... :)

I don't know. If dynos are accurate enough to be somewhat compared(i.e. 3-4% accurate), almost every 3.2L E36 M3 is stronger than an S2000(~205-215whp for M3 to 195-200whp for S2k). The 'fatter' powerband of the M3 also means the integral of its torque curve from maybe 4.5-6.5k RPM will be higher than that of an S2000 from 6-9k.

I think the Cd of both cars are very close, and the frontal area is only slightly smaller on the S2000.

That said, I think they'd be pretty darn close. Would pretty much come down to who shifted quicker and thus could pour the power on for longer.

BTW - you frequent Honda-Tech.com? Your name seems familiar.

You can modify the S2000's and get some gains from it. You just have to use parts like Comptech or Mugen. True that they are tweaked out stock but you can gain an extra 15 or so of a Mugen I/H/E.

Haha, sorta sounds like the best mod for the S2k is Jenny Craig.

Nice run!

Good job, Matt! I'm still waiting for the day when I get to run an S2000 on the highway. Guess I'll just have to add it to my list:

94-98 Mustang Cobra
99+ Mustang GT
Any S2000
S52 M Roadster/Coupe
Any 350Z
Any S4

Of course, we're talking either stock or similar mods to mine (chip/intake).

Let's get you into the 13's Ron, before you attack most of the cars on that list... ;)

Ron17

I'm getting there... slowly but surely. I'll be back at the track in a month or so, I would think. I was making good progress towards the 13's when the track closed for the winter.

"slowly but surely"

Key phrase, there? :dunno :D

Freudian slip? ;)

Ron17

My progress is slow but sure. My car is not...

Of course, that's a matter of debate, based on what your perception of "fast" is, but in my world, I've got a fast car. It's no world beater and there's thousands upon thousands that are faster, but it is fast to me. :dunno

True -- but there are a number of S2000's with dynos of 205-210 -- and they weigh less than the M3 to boot.

Yes, but with the top down the S2000 more closely resembles a brick at speed.

94-98 Mustang Cobra

94-95 302 rated at 240
96-98 4.6 DOHC rated at 305
(Some argue that the 98's were a tad quicker than the 96-97's as the computer allowed the mixture to run leaner for somthing like 18 seconds at WOT)

The 302 and 4.6 DOHC cobras are very different in terms of performance. I had a 98 what would run consistent 13.6's all day long. Fun car.

read about some article on C&D. Some company is supercharging the S2k. It's just like the S54 E46 M3, the engine is maxxed out right out of the box, but people will find a ways to tune it a little more. 110 + more hp from RMS s/c or something.:)

Good run Matt.
This is almost the same thing that happend to me...see my thread about three down from yours. It looks like we have learned that s2000s are our E36 M3s equal on the freeway.

Oh yeah one more thing,

I cant wait to see one of these things on the street at a light........then I will show why 240+ ft lbs of torque dominates on whatever they make.:devillook

I like the S2000 but M power would lay the smack down on it from a rolling start, in general. From a stop, where the S2k driver can get his car to 7000-8000 rpm, where the power lies, then it might be a little closer...

They are nice looking cars though. The sheer idea of 240 hp from 2.0 liters N/A is great :D

Actually -- a few encounters on the S2000 boards indicate that the S2000 is capable of outrunning E36 M3's from any speed, be it from a stop or from a roll....

Guess it depends on which board you're getting your info from ;)

Once you get a s2k rolling and they can keep their motor above 6500 rpm they can be pretty competent. But on a standing start, those car are wicked slow. I've race a few of them on my M3 and they never came close. But on the highway they seem to keep up pretty well once they downshift.

Why does every other board always pick on us Bimmer guys......(coughing)......350Z boards anyone?

Put a passenger in an S2K and it loses it's torque. I was in my friend's S2K, and my 197 lbs. a$$ negated his torque output (LOL!). But once we were going down hill and put the sails up going with the wind it was pretty damn fast.

Good run, Matt! An S2k driver has to know where his powerband is to run with the M3. It's another case of being easier to go fast in the M3.

They must have been running against a regular 3-series, or maybe a 3-series badged ///M3. I think other drivers have a tough time telling an M3 from a 3-series from a glance. A guy in a S2000 actually said to me "Nice M3!" back in the day when I was driving my 93 325IS, it was badged 325IS in the back.

A stock S2000 against an stock M3 will be close. But my money will go to the stock M3. Start adding bolt on mods, and the M3 will have even more of an advantage.

Matt rulz! Good Kill. :buttrock

There have been stock S2000 1/4 mile times in the 13's; I can't recall seeing any E36M3's stock in the 13's ... but then I agree it's a close race either way.

I have seen stock E36 M3s run high 13's at the track in Epping, NH. Mostly 13.9x, but I once watched a stock M3/4 drop a 13.7x - the guy really knew how to launch his car. With a good driver, the E36 M3 is every bit the high-13-second car along with the S2000.
