View Full Version : Nebraskans?
Reuben540i 02-11-2007, 08:10 PM I haven't been on the regional forum at all so I don't know who's who here. I'm wondering how many people on here live in Nebraska. I've been doing events with the Missourri Valley Chapter but I haven't met many people close to my age through it. The club is fun and the people are cool but I'm in a younger generation and I'm trying to see if there are other people around my age here that share the same interests. Laters.

AlarmedBread 02-12-2007, 06:25 AM I'm probably one of the youngest punks around these parts at 19. I'll be attending track days with the club and other social events ofcourse.
ADRNLN_ti 02-12-2007, 10:14 AM hey, us old folks can have fun too :-)
Reuben, nice plow!!
S
GotCone? 02-12-2007, 11:28 AM I'm in NE and not old. I like to have fun too.
I'm mainly into autocross though.
Conechaser 02-12-2007, 12:18 PM I'm in Omaha. I'm not as active with the MoValley guys except instructing for DE's. You can find me at SCCA events (AutoX, RallyX, Club racing) and there are a lot of young'uns there.
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 12:37 PM In Lincoln here as well.
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 01:28 PM hey, us old folks can have fun too :-)

Sheridan??? Haha.... I never said you old folks aren't fun :)
It's just tha at every event our chapter does I haven't met anyone closer to my age. Not a problem, just curious to see if they're out there. I was going to try to trick them into getting involved :D
You old folks are some of the coolest old folks i've met, but it seems like a lot of you guys have prior obligations all the time, hence my idea for more social events getting shut down on the yahoo group. Just trying to find some people that might be up for doing car related stuff more often :)

Did you used to have a tennis ball for a shift knob? Lol, i think I met you at the pool party last year.....????
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 01:35 PM Maybe some of us Nebraskans could get together sometime for a little BBQ brewskies and car talk, eh...eh?? (sorry, idea stolen from KC guys-Sorry Brady)
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 01:42 PM actually, the KC guys stole the idea from us, they are just more with-it and have less hectic lives...
you'll also see Mr. Project on here... I don't know if you've met him or not... and "your age"...
eh, I'm 28, I think armen is finally 28, sheridan might as well be 13, Jeff is the equivalent to an 11 year old and eric is about 30. we aint THAT old!!!
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 01:52 PM Haha.... I don't have a problem with old people :) It just seems that the older they are the less socializing they wanna do. The more the merrier, I don't care how old, i just found out not to ask them to hang out too often cause they have trouble finding babysitters :) Also I'm 21 BTW
And don't make fun of Sheridan just cause he acts 13, I'm kind of jealous. :)
'
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 02:04 PM :rofl
the other thing you will find is that a large number of our club are self-employed or the rough equivalent.
that means we live breathe and eat our work. time is scarce and brilliantly valuable.
GotCone? 02-12-2007, 02:24 PM Sheridan??? Haha.... I never said you old folks aren't fun :)

I'm up for it. Wasn't free for the MVC banquet and haven't really seen/heard of any other gatherings. I don't frequent the yahoo groups much and the website never seems to have much for info about social gatherings.

The past couple of weekends I've been out in the garage working on one of the cars (Bimmer stuff) so depending on how you look at it....I was busy or I was BUSY :-)
I'm hoping we do a detailing tech session and I hope to invite everyone over when I rebuild the brakes (caliper rubbers etc) this spring.
To answer your question...a 20y/o owning a Bimmer is rather rare. If you are looking for a girl that's in her late teens or early 20's that will be a rarer find. One that isn't a Paris Hilton type anyway :stickoutt
S
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 02:59 PM Warmer weather usually helps things out as well... its just been too bloody cold to do a whole lot as of late.
Mr Project 02-12-2007, 03:53 PM I can't remember how old I am. Pretty sure I live in Lincoln, though. I'd like to do social events but I'm too busy sitting on my front porch with my shotgun telling those dang kids to get off my lawn.
Stupid kids.
(ok, seriously I just stay pretty busy with projects...hence the sn...nice to meet you, Reuben. :) )

Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 04:15 PM Warmer weather usually helps things out as well... its just been too bloody cold to do a whole lot as of late.
Well I didn't necessarily mean we have to go jump on a project out in the cold or anything, just maybe a get together for some good food and some car talk :redspot
Also I have this idea of a Sunday afternoon drive/dinner for when it warms up a bit if anyone is interested. Kind of a monthly thing, or weekly if we so choose... Just don't know anybody else around here that would be interested besides Bimmer guys :) Just a little something to get involved with more people that share the same interestes in our small portion of the country. :D
Anyways let me know what you think :buttrock

Haha.... Im not looking for a g/f here are you kidding me? A general rule of thumb is to keep the car and girl interests seperate so that if one of the two is pissing me off I can always turn to the other :D
Sheridan, I thnk a detailing tech session would be a great idea, see this is the type of thing I wish our club would do more of. That and proposing a new go-kart track so we don't have to trek all the way to KC to do so :(

Jon
The banquet was a good time though, even though I didn't know too many people and nearly none of them were under thirty, they're still a fun crowd.
Ya I know the yahoo group and website don't offer much for social gatherings, that's why I wanted to ask around here and see what you guys thought. Do many of you know each other pretty well already?
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 04:33 PM if you've got an idea, get it organized and do it... the club will throw in behind you, we've just got so many irons in the fire its tough to tackle everything.

Damn kids and their music.:nono
Haha... Nice to mee you too Armen. If you ever need an extra hand on a project let me know, that counts as socializing and I love learning :D
BTW didn't you have an entire thread about a Corvair you completely rebuilt? I read through that, pretty impressive.
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 04:36 PM Darkhelmet,
Great movie btw, lol. I noticed your car is "in pieces" what is it? or what was it? Are you driving anything at the moment?
GotCone? 02-12-2007, 04:38 PM I'm up for a detail session as well as I detail cars on the side with a friend. I'd be curious to what products others use and any different techniques. BMW paint is damn hard, not soft at all like my previous scoobies.
I also need to put shocks/struts on my car once they arrive this week. I'll probably wait until it's a bit warmer, but when I do it, I'll post up to see if anyone wants to help/watch. I really need to meet some of you BF.Nebraskans in person.
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 04:47 PM at the moment I'm down to just one... a 93 318i with a bunch of suspension and drivetrain goodies that don't really seem to make it any faster it already isn't.
and its mostly a steaming pile of ticking time-bomb that I will someday seek revenge on the previous owner for creating.
the other one was a 1983 533i with a bunch of work that actually made it a BETTER car, as opposed to what has been done to the E36.
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 04:49 PM Jon... the shocks are a 20-minute job once the trunk carpet it out. the struts are a bit more involved...

I'm in.
and diddo on the meeting BF. people in person.
Also you auto-x an m3 and you didn't want to go to the dinner because it cost $25? (They don't JUST make you listen to Jeff and force gourmet food down your throat, they throw in nice door prizes to help ease the pain :D)No pun intended just curious..
Mr Project 02-12-2007, 04:52 PM BTW didn't you have an entire thread about a Corvair you completely rebuilt?
You just need to rephrase that into the present tense. It's far from complete. :) I've been spending myself into bankruptcy $4 at a time at Ace Hardware putting the drivetrain and rear suspension back together lately. That is the really nice part about a 40-year old domestic car....all the grade 8 hardware I need to reassemble the car is 2 blocks away in nice little plastic bins. :)

haha.... i can relate with the previous owner crap. My e30 is that way, and that's y i stripped it to nothing and am someday hoping to make it into a track-only car. Wasn't taken care of at all before i got it, but for an e30 that ran and drove well I got a hell of a deal at $450. In fact the day after I bought it I attempted to do an oil change on it. 8 hours and an air-hammer later I was able to get the oil filter off. Who knows how long it had been since it was last changed, it was nearly welded to the oil cooler mounting bracket thingy.
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 05:10 PM Sheridan,
did you take a look at those pictures?
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 05:14 PM dang... paid six GRAND for my pile of parts....
ADRNLN_ti 02-12-2007, 05:17 PM Sheridan,
did you take a look at those pictures?
nope, having VPN problems away from home. i can get email text, no links or attachments. i haven't had time to cut/paste with a "real" computer (wireless link from phone).
S
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 05:30 PM dang... paid six GRAND for my pile of parts....
well that's too bad, i bought an e36 325is last year for $4500 in near perfect working and asthetic condition. Too bad there are bad drivers out there :(
As far as the e30 goes, I finally realized how much the previous owner/s actually cared for the car when I first went to rotate the tires. I swichted them and took it for a drive and the car kept jerking me from one side to the other. I jacked the car back up, took off the wheels and noticed that the tie rods were rubbing on the rims. The wheels that WERE on the front had grooves in them already all the way around so that the tie rods no longer touched them, hence me not noticing this before.
Apparently they must have drove it around tugging and pulling from side to side for a while to get it that way. WTF!!!:eyecrazy
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 06:08 PM Darkhelmet,
you're a board member eh? Did I meet you at the dinner possibly?
What's your name on the yahoo group?
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 06:36 PM If anyone is interested in a tech session I need help with a fan clutch and hood latch cable. Eh eh?
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 06:46 PM fan clutch is pretty easy... at least it was on my M30.
hood latch cable... you and adam froeming both need that.
and I wasn't at the dinner, but I think we met at a DE or pool party once...
Jeremy Kester <- real name.
Reuben540i 02-12-2007, 07:22 PM I believe the fan clutch should be easy too but i believe it involve a BMW special tool and I'm trying to find a way around that. Can't get it off. I believe it's reverse threaded but i've tried spinning it both ways and it won't come off. I can spin it either way but it doesn't make any progress. this is on an m62 so...
p.s. Darkhelmet- do you ever post on the yahoo group?
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 07:43 PM I never needed the special tool to do the M30, but it was necessary (or a substitute tool) on the E36.
I am actually the "owner" of the yahoo group, but I almost never post on there because of security settings at work, which is where most of my web-time is.
it is reverse thread, but seriously, stop by the house on saturday morning and I'll show you how to get rid of it.
it's really easy in concept, just a matter of whether or not you need the special tool to exert the proper force or you can just make due. as I said, the M30s have all been cake (3 of them I've dealt with) the M42 was a PITA.
Mr Project 02-12-2007, 07:53 PM I have an uber-cheezy and slightly too flimsy version of the 'special tool' that I made from a scrap of sheetmetal that was laying around. Jeremy probably still has it in his garage (along with my paint gun cleaning tools!).
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 08:27 PM I'm pretty sure I gave you the "homemade" job back... but guilty on the paint gun tools... crap!
Mr Project 02-12-2007, 09:31 PM I'll have to trade you for a really nice Matco jack sometime. :)
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 09:40 PM Deal!
Dark Helmet 02-12-2007, 09:45 PM btw, posting from work at 7:45PM = ftl.
GotCone? 02-12-2007, 11:28 PM Jon... the shocks are a 20-minute job once the trunk carpet it out. the struts are a bit more involved...
Not worried about the work as I've done lots of suspension work in the past and have what I need on hand to do this.
Just offering up an excuse for a gathering is all.
Jon

Cost wasn't the issue. I had a scheduling conflict on that date.
BTW, I have the fan clutch removal tool if you need to use it. I tried the recommendation of the human impact to pop it loose, but it didn't give, so I just got the tools to do it from pelican parts IIRC.

Sweet, I'd like to borrow that tool if that's cool with you, Im not sure when though as I may be going to Cali for business/pleasure this weekend.
Darkhelmet- Thanks for the offer on saturday, if i'm around sat i will def. take you up on that. I'm not for sure if I'm going to go to Cali this weekend or not yet but i will let you know if I don't.
Dark Helmet 02-13-2007, 04:15 AM werd.
AlarmedBread 02-13-2007, 07:05 AM Did you used to have a tennis ball for a shift knob? Lol, i think I met you at the pool party last year.....????
Yes I did :cool . I was wondering why the shifter felt so 'rubbery' and thought it was worn bushings, turned out to be the plastic in the shift knob had snapped and was only held on by the foam rubber stuff. That car is in pieces atm. The other e30 made it to the black hills and back :buttrock
I'd be up for get togethers/cruises to just bs and such.
Mr Project 02-13-2007, 09:36 AM Rueben, I'd be happy to help with the hood latch as well sometime. My garage is fairly well-equipped, but not heated, so we just have to find a time when it's not brutally cold.
GotCone? 02-13-2007, 11:10 AM Sweet, I'd like to borrow that tool if that's cool with you, Im not sure when though as I may be going to Cali for business/pleasure this weekend.

Sounds good... I'll let you all know when, where, what.
Reuben540i 02-19-2007, 02:53 PM Hey everyone, I'm still out in Cal but the plan is to be back before the weekend. I have all the parts ordered and they should be here before i get back to town. I want to try and get it all done this weekend so if anyone has some spare time and would like to offer their expertise it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Mr Project 02-20-2007, 12:33 PM Hey, good timing, I'll be 'bachelor-ing it' this weekend, so chances are good that I'll be able to lend a hand.

Good deal, I can't really do any more work without getting that fan tool first, I am trying to find a way out to Gretna to pick it up from Jon before saturday so I can try to tackle everything as soon as I get back. Nothing should be difficult, I'm replacing one more radiator hose, the expansion tank, fan clutch, fan, and the serpentine belt. Nothing that I think I would need a hand with but it's always appreciated, and anyways it would be nice to get someone else's opinion on my hood. :buttrock
If i can get that tool Hopefully I'll have it done before sat and I could come show u the hood. we'll see, i'll keep u updated.
Reuben540i 02-20-2007, 01:34 PM unless your not busy firday and want to go out to gretna mith me..... eh eh?
AlarmedBread 02-20-2007, 02:48 PM Hmm...
Well I have a "fun" project for this weekend...
oilpan, engine, trans mounts, guibo, csb, shifter rebuild, power steering rebuild, radiator...maybe an upper gasket set if I'm feeling ambitious...
unless the weather turns bad :confused
Mr Project 02-20-2007, 06:55 PM Rueben, I'm going to Mahoney tonight for a Corvair meeting...Gretna is just around the corner at that point, I'd be happy to slide up and pick up the tool for you if arrangements can be made. I'll be here for another hour or so.
Reuben540i 02-20-2007, 09:43 PM That'd be great if you can get ahold of Jon, I'm gonna be out of town until thursday evening so there's nothing I can really do
Just Blaze 02-21-2007, 12:17 AM Another Omahan here :) Don't have my BMW yet, still looking for an E36 M3 vert.
Mr Project 02-21-2007, 10:17 AM Ahh, didn't see your message until I got back, and I don't have any contact info for Jon.
Just remembered I'm going to Omaha tomorrow afternoon again to take my wife to the airport (lots of driving this week!), I'll pm Jon and see if we can work something out.
GotCone? 02-21-2007, 03:15 PM Worked out!
Tool should be en route to Lincoln tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks - Jon

You're going to Omaha tomorrow afternoon? Hmm... I'm going to be flying into Omaha at around 430. I have someone coming to pick me up already but they have to drive up from Lincoln... if Your going to be there around the time I get in would u be willing to just take me back? I dont need a ride but if I could save someone a trip that would be great, and when we got back to town u could come check out the damage also. If that wouldn't work out for you that's ok but let me know asap so I can cancel my other ride.
Maybe that's weird to pick up strangers from the airport, but it's ok, I'm not scared of strangers :D

Sorry we got way off topic here... Welcome aboard... Blaze is it?
AlarmedBread 02-21-2007, 07:32 PM Well it was nice today...soo...my car is fixed :)
I'll be available to assist with anyone elses projects they have going on this weekend. Still need to take care of my shifter too but nuts to the b clip, and don't want to try and drop the exaust untill I replace it.
I'd offer you a ride, but I currenty have no plates...eh...I made it to the black hills and back without any ;)

Heh, and I'm stranger than most. Sure, I'll take you home. I'll be there anyway, so I'll either run an errand in Omaha or just study at the airport between the flights. Shoot me a PM or e-mail with your flight info. We can stop by Jon's on the way back to Lincoln. I'm a dark-haired guy with a beard.

GotCone? 02-22-2007, 08:29 PM Was nice to meet you Armen & Reuben. We'll have to get together sometime when we both have more time.
I'd be up for a trip out to Lincoln probably.
Reuben540i 02-23-2007, 12:53 AM Nice meeting you too Jon, let us know whenever you have some free time maybe we can all get to know each other a little better
Mr Project 02-23-2007, 08:44 AM Chris - glad to hear yours came back together ok.
Great to meet you both, Reuben and Jon! We definitely need to find a time to all get together at some point. Jon, I hope to at least get the Corvair out to an auto-x or two this year as well, so if you see something that looks totally out-of-place, be sure to come say hi. :)

Awesome!
Want a co-driver? ;)
Mr Project 02-23-2007, 11:50 AM I don't know, are you sure you can handle 63.5 RWHP? :D Plus those 4 drum brakes will suck your eyeballs right out of the sockets. :)
AlarmedBread 02-23-2007, 12:10 PM Bah..
I'll not beable to make it out today, car is still running like garbage. It backfires and runs really rich below 3k when warmed up, so putting around town is a PITA. I geuss its sort of like those touring cars that idle like crap and hate life below the torque band :rolleyes
Going to see Sheridan and see if he can shed a little light on the situation :)
Reuben540i 02-23-2007, 12:12 PM Good luck! :)

Sounds like coolant temp sensor? Maybe a sticking or leaking cold start injector? (Does the M20 have one?) Horribly maladjusted AFM?
AlarmedBread 02-23-2007, 03:29 PM Sounds like coolant temp sensor? Maybe a sticking or leaking cold start injector? (Does the M20 have one?) Horribly maladjusted AFM?
I've checked all that and does not seem to be the issue(s) maybe the temp sensor...spec was .3 and it read .27, it was a cold day when I checked it.
AFM is known to be good.
cold start injectors on ETA engines only.
Got a lambada fault code from the scanner, which was not really new news to anyone.
Sheridan's place of work is quite impressive!
The gutlessness (as it is now known as) in low revs all but disappeared after driving around for a while on the way home. :eyecrazy
car hates me.
Sorry to get way OT in your thread Rueben!
Reuben540i 02-23-2007, 05:16 PM Sorry to get way OT in your thread Rueben!
Lol, its ok our original discussion is over...
About your problem, make sure you dont hava vacuum leak.
One time I had a problem like that on my e30 and it ended up that the intake boot had cracks in it that I couldn't even see, it was cheap to replace and it solved the probelm. Dont read anymore into it than you have to, sometimes the worst problems are the easiest to fix.
Mr Project 02-23-2007, 05:37 PM Sounds like it could be electrical as well. Maybe the wire to the CTS has comprimised insulation and is grounding against the valve cover or something.
Air leaks can often be found by the 'shoot carb cleaner everywhere while the engine is idling' method as well...that does sound like a possibility.
Dark Helmet 02-24-2007, 10:23 AM holy soggy batman!!!!
so much for getting a lot of stuff done today. at least the gutters are clear and flowing... dang.
forecast says and inch of rain, I'm pretty sure we're already past that.
hopefully armen can still get some thrashing done on the 'vair today
Just Blaze 02-24-2007, 10:35 PM Sorry we got way off topic here... Welcome aboard... Blaze is it?
Why yes, yes it is. Good to be here, seems like a lot of good info/people. Now, to actually acquire the car...
Reuben540i 02-25-2007, 04:30 PM Don't make any hasty decisions when buying a BMW, lots of BMW owners seem to think that they don't need to "maintain" it because it's a BMW and it's perfect, so they never do anything about it, then when something happens they just sell it. So just be careful, I would recommend a shop doing a pre-buy inspection, paying extra attention to the cooling and electrical systems. Good luck!
Reuben540i 02-25-2007, 04:35 PM I Got all the work done I needed to to get the car working again. I drove it to Omaha and back and around town a bit since I replaced everything and it hasn't shown any signs of problems. I replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses, expansion tank, serpentine belt, fan clutch and fan, so I am still going to need some help with my hood latch cable, it seems a little tricky, and also my hood damage. Thanks to all who offered help and special thanks to Jon and Armen for the tool and the ride!
-Reuben
GotCone? 02-25-2007, 11:06 PM Glad you got it done. Hope the tool helped you get the work done easier.
Jon
Reuben540i 02-26-2007, 02:43 AM Glad you got it done. Hope the tool helped you get the work done easier.
Jon
ya i dont think I could have done it without it. they could have designed it better though. thanks Jon.
Mr Project 02-26-2007, 09:24 AM Glad the car is running! Did you find the small 'drip' leak?

GotCone? 02-26-2007, 11:19 AM Armen, since we touched on fun/fast wagons that handle, figured I'd provide you some insight on the couple I had that counted.

'98 Impreza wagon with a version 3 STi drive train swap, but with a new US spec 2.5L block w/ IHI VF30. suspension less exciting as it's just AGX's and G/C's, but this thing with my not so good at drag racing skills turned a 12.9 at Scribner with a 1.8 60ft only trapping about 110mph turbo was small by many standards, but I reached max boost of 17 psi by 2900 rpm. 315whp :p

Thought I'd share. Would love to take the M to these power levels, but won't be.
AlarmedBread 02-26-2007, 01:12 PM those are a couple of mean scoobydoo's!
I geuss shaggy got the powdered sugar mixed up when he made scooby snacks....
Dark Helmet 02-26-2007, 01:19 PM armen may or may not be resisting the tempation to start another touring project...
:devillook
(man, I love being the little devil on his shoulder beating the snot out of the angel on the other side... muahahahhahahhahahahhahahaa)
Mr Project 02-26-2007, 01:42 PM Sweet Subies! I seriously contemplated a bugeye wagon back in '02/'03. Great little cars...
(Jeremy, I take it you saw my e-mail today? :) )

Haha... actually that "leak" turned out to be nothing. I was doing that in the dark and couldn't tell what I was doing and I think I just overfilled it a little and some ran down to the lower part of the cooling system and started dripping. I couldn't find a leak in the daylight and so far so good, so I'm assuming it was just my idiocy, lol. Very Excited to drive again :D
Dark Helmet 02-26-2007, 03:02 PM good news Ruben, and yeah armen, saw the email...
Mr Project 02-26-2007, 03:56 PM Reuben, I'm going to be out of town all week, but if we can find a time, I'd be happy to help you tack weld the hood back together and give you some pointers on smoothing it out.
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 10:52 AM Hey whats up, newbie here... I am picking up a 2001 325i series here shortly just thought I would pop in and say hi here are a few pics. Nothing as far as mods go except and intake, but its more of a luxury cruiser for me... maybe, just maybe an AutoX event or two but I'm in the Omaha area. It's real clean...
Unfortunately my account cannot post URL's/Pics yet... :/
GotCone? 02-27-2007, 11:22 AM WELCOME!
email me your pics and I can host and post them for you.
Would be great to get more BMW's out to the autocrosses.

Looks clean.
Maybe we should start a Nebraska Introductions thread where we all post our names, pics of ourself, and our car.
Just an idea.
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 11:47 AM It may not be a bad idea... plus somebody mentioned a get together here, I should have this within a week or two (getting warranty work performed, front ball joints, window regulators) whats March looking like for everybody?
:redspot
McCoolidge 02-27-2007, 11:49 AM This is the thread I've been looking for! Another Omahan' signing in, I got an alpine e30, and I think I have seen some of your guy's cars about.
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 12:15 PM Awesome another newbie... now I don't feel so lonely, Coolidge do you have any pics of that E30?
McCoolidge 02-27-2007, 01:08 PM I need to take some, all the ones I have are completely stock and as all of you know, Its not the best weather to be taking pics.
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 01:13 PM Oh yeah crappy weather but by the end of the week it should be nice...
Dark Helmet 02-27-2007, 04:58 PM I drove a "street mod" E30 to lunch today.... mmmmmmmm, noise....
AlarmedBread 02-27-2007, 05:20 PM ^Thats one nice thing about having a bmw.
It can be noisy as all hell (straight pipes, mmmm highway drone), and cops won't bat an eye at you :buttrock
Dark Helmet 02-27-2007, 05:33 PM they gave us the evil-eye...
its sporting R-compounds, uber-low suspension, anti-bling CAI, and a straight-pipe plus a SHORT glass-pack.
it belongs to a guy I work with... he's luring me into the SCCA slowly but surely.
AlarmedBread 02-27-2007, 05:41 PM Rcomp's cruising around the streets in winter? :nono
I got pulled over all the time in my red car (mostly due to the hood rich wheels it had when I bought it) but never ticketed.
Its pothole heaven downtown this time of year, I don't even like driving my not very much lowered car around. Its like an autox dodging all the potholes.
Dark Helmet 02-27-2007, 06:03 PM it was awesome, and potholes aren't too bad out this direction...
GotCone? 02-27-2007, 06:08 PM Speaking of Rcomps. Anyone need some 17" ones?
I've got six used Hoosiers I'm looking to unload. 245/40-17 A3S05's
Dark Helmet 02-27-2007, 06:14 PM Jon, do you know Daniel Giesbrecht?
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 10:50 PM Rcompounds in the winter is some crazy stuff especially with the craters we have around town this time of year... that's an expensive ride, but I'd do it too :buttrock
Kreuzen 02-27-2007, 11:03 PM it was awesome, and potholes aren't too bad out this direction...
Well I chaulked up 2 Falken Ziex 225/40/R17 and 1 RSL Villain 17x8 wheel up to a pot hole on 84th about 300 yards before Q st... they are nasty but unfortunately its hard to tell at 40mph just how nasty...
BTW.. does the city take responsibility for this stuff or is it just up to the driver?
AlarmedBread 02-28-2007, 12:08 AM The city might compensate for damages, be sure you document everything very well, take detailed pictures of the crash site, with a ruler or someother form of scale and damages to your vehicle.
In all honesty, the amount of time I had to spend to get a wheel/tierod replaced would have been better spent getting a minimum wage job and paying for it that way. :rolleyes But if you have nothing better to do, or you have legal representation to do this for you, it is possible to get compensation.
Thats right Uncle sam, give me my brand new $40 steelie.

Yeah I gave up rather quickly because when I actually called they pulled some crap about it being a Ralston street and how they usually don't compensate due to the ability to avoid the pothole... well they don't know I was avoiding beer bottles being chucked out of an unlicensed Riviera, so its either get the beer bottle in the windshield and not be able to track the bastards down, or take the pot hole... I chose the pothole...
Kreuzen 02-28-2007, 09:57 AM Anybody ever talk to the KC guys? Does/has anybody been down there to chat with'em? Cause it'd be kind neat to do a day trip down there for lunch/show and shine or something...
Dark Helmet 02-28-2007, 10:41 AM The KC dudes are cool, if you have something in mind, just have at it and get it organized.
GotCone? 02-28-2007, 10:44 AM Jon, do you know Daniel Giesbrecht?
Yes. I had the pleasure to autocross his car on a fun run last season. I knew him back when he first came out to autocross, before he even had his E30.
He's a great guy.
GotCone? 02-28-2007, 10:46 AM The KC dudes are cool
I agree. I know Chris (red E30 M3) and another friend of his with a black E30 M3. Haven't met many others, aside from an older guy in a 300ci at an autocross down there.
Just Blaze 02-28-2007, 12:50 PM Don't make any hasty decisions when buying a BMW, lots of BMW owners seem to think that they don't need to "maintain" it because it's a BMW and it's perfect, so they never do anything about it, then when something happens they just sell it. Thanks for the advice. I've currently got my eye on a '99 Hellrot vert with 39K miles down in Florida. If we get the price settled, then I'll have the PPI done and take it from there.

He joined our firm in January... he and I tend to get distracted quite a bit...
he drove the E30 to work yesterday... Lunch took a little longer than expected... heeheeheehee....
I think he's going to come to the Driving School at MPH in late-april, you should tag along!

don't go vert... can't take them to driving school...
Kreuzen 02-28-2007, 08:06 PM Awesome, sounds like you guys have had the chance to meet some other people in the region, anybody from Des Moines?
Dark Helmet 02-28-2007, 09:52 PM I know a pretty good cross-section of mid-west dudes from all of the Driving schools. 4-5 From Des Moines, maybe 6-8 from KC (maybe more...?)
not to mention some STL guys.
GotCone? 02-28-2007, 11:16 PM I'm considering coming to the April school at MPH just to hang out and meet some of you guys.
I won't be joining you mainly due to the cost, and the fact that I've already been setting up one of the RC 101 schools through MPH for the local Subaru club and will be tagging along on that for a much cheaper price. I'll be the only BMW out there though. :D
We'll see. April is a busy month as I'm event chair for 'The Motorsport Mile'. It's going to be a mile long autocross on the track at MPH. Cones from turns 9 thru 2 to keep speeds down to solo. Hope we can draw a lot of interest.
http://nrscca.com/events.php?event_id=13
Heck... I was racing at MPH before their was any asphalt :p RallyCross.
George and I know each other well.
I love that track.
Dark Helmet 02-28-2007, 11:20 PM I soooooo would have loved to do the RX out there...
and I'll be observing (I think) on saturday only... hope to see you there.
McCoolidge 03-01-2007, 01:37 AM Where is a good driving school near Omaha? I am looking into learning how to use this car for its intended purpose and learned the closest BMWCCA chapter is in Lincoln, and I have no clue where to start.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 10:28 AM Anybody drive in the snow this morning?
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 11:11 AM mccoolidge, best bet for a DE near Omaha is our chapter school out in Hastings... yeah, its 2hrs out, but the facility is gorgeous and I honestly like the track MUCH better than Mid-America back to the east.
bmwccamvc.org and follow the links on the main page there.
Kreuzen: I drove the E36... no problems at all.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 11:24 AM I won't have my E46 til Monday or Wednesday after Inspection I gets done... :( but my Lancer sucks in this stuff...
AlarmedBread 03-01-2007, 11:59 AM Snow is tons of fun.
Except for the part where my airdam serves as a snowplow....
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 12:26 PM my old E28 was a phenomenal snow-car... best I've ever had. the E36 just sits a little too low is all.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 12:31 PM Thats the problem... my Lancer is a Plow and the new BMW will have the ZHP suspension so I bet it'll push some snow as well...
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 12:49 PM oofta, yeah. my E36 used to sit about 1.5-2" LOWER than a ZHP... that would be death.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 01:09 PM OMG that would be just nasty... its really bad out right now, at least where I'm @ 120th and Blondo area, I can't see across the street
AlarmedBread 03-01-2007, 01:23 PM Don't worry, we are prepared for such weather!
Complete with snowplow ;)

McCoolidge 03-01-2007, 01:25 PM Hey alarmedbread, I think I may have followed you up I-680 once, I saw a red IS going about on the interstate and decided to give chase, maybe maybe not, it was about a month ago.
AlarmedBread 03-01-2007, 01:30 PM ^I'm afraid not, my IS is delphin now.
Red one was naughty and is on timeout for a bit.
We should meet up sometime, in better weather ofcourse.
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 01:35 PM Mr. Project flies into eppley on friday night... we should all greet him in formation... that would be interesting.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 01:37 PM Yeah you are pretty prepared... truck will get it done...
AlarmedBread 03-01-2007, 01:38 PM ^esp. the part where we tandem drift around the parkinglots :stickoutt
My oil pan does not like the ice chunk forming capacity of the recent precipitation.
McCoolidge 03-01-2007, 01:43 PM Alarmed, I am doing an I engine swap + rebuild and preparing for possible turbo this summer, but I would love to meet. We need a BMW meet in Omaha dammit!
GotCone? 03-01-2007, 02:24 PM Oh yeah crappy weather but by the end of the week it should be nice...

Lets make it happen then. I'm game.
BTW, you can also look into MPH hosted drivers schools if you want. Just check their website. http://www.racemph.com
It's $175 for a 5 hour school, and then $50 more for 'after school' session driving.
Pretty darn cheap if you ask me.
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 02:35 PM shut up Jon, we're trying to get ours filled!!! and ours is about 16 hours worth...
GotCone? 03-01-2007, 02:50 PM my bad. :p
No one has enough brakes/tires/energy for 16 hours of track time! At least I don't.
I was just trying to help someone get an easy small taste for a reasonable price to just get them started for the first time. Forgive me... I'm a cheap skate autocrosser.

The other BMWCCA school will be hosted by the Iowa Chapter in June at Midamerica Motorplex (MAM). www.bmwia.org for more info once it gets posted.
I like both tracks. MAM has higher speeds and you can break the track down into 3 sections so I think it's easier to learn and instruct on. There is a whole bunch of runoff room at MAH so even if you do make a mistake... you have a pretty big cushion before you hit anything hard. I probably have more laps at Hastings than anyone else on this board at the moment. Motorsports Park Hastings (MPH) doens't have as high of a velocity but it will twist 3rd gear to the limits. Once you start into the twisty bits (turns 4 to 13) you have to keep your head into the game as there really isn't a break in the action. MPH is pretty good on run off areas... but not as good as MAM.
Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 03:24 PM but the MVC chapter is cooler than the Iowa chapter.... :D:D:D:D:D

I'm counting total school time there, classroom and in-car totals up to about 8hrs a day for two days. a lot of that is brief/debrief time, but you're busy learning pretty much "all day" if the club is doing their job right.
and I'm also just giving you guys crap.
Kreuzen 03-01-2007, 03:31 PM I want to get out to Hastings to do that class/course just for fun, I think it would be a riot... I'd do the MAM one probably first just because it is closer...

Dark Helmet 03-01-2007, 04:41 PM that would suck, Jan... I don't know what our registration #s are like at the moment, but I think we could use more.
Just Blaze 03-01-2007, 06:08 PM don't go vert... can't take them to driving school...
True...but I've wanted a vert since I was old enough to pay attention to cars.
In other news, the Hellrot vert I mentioned is out of the picture. Dude wanted about $3K more than I was willing to pay, and he wouldn't budge. I did, however, run across one with 11K miles that I might be checking out on Saturday :)
