View Full Version : E46 M3 SS Race Exhaust acceptable at LIME ROCK PARK???
BMW4LIFE 02-09-2007, 08:59 PM Hi,
Just wondering if anyone here has an E46 M3 with the Supersprint Race Exhaust and was black flagged for noise at Lime Rock Park.
Thanks in advance!
M3RACER 02-09-2007, 09:10 PM The ss race is loud on the street but once you compare it to real track cars its really quite. Anyway, I ve run with no problem.
BMW4LIFE 02-09-2007, 11:38 PM Thank you for the input!
How about the Gruppe M ti Exhaust? Anyone run that at Lime Rock with any issues?
It sounds louder than the SS race exhaust on video's....
Steve J. 02-09-2007, 11:43 PM Go buy a cheap Decibel meter from radio shack and test it yourself. Should give you a good idea.
BMW4LIFE 02-10-2007, 12:14 AM I wanted to get an idea before buying since I will spending most of my time at LRP. I would not be fun to buy an exhaust and get black flagged and have to remove and sell it.
Out of curiosity, anyone know what the noise limit is at LRP???
TIA
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 12:56 AM Muffled events are 89db I believe from ~50ft?
I'm not sure on the exact decibel, I remember 85 to 89 over the last couple years.
For reference I had a 2.5L WC motor only revving to 7000 and I had a straight race KK exhaust on it, and I passed with no problems.
BMW4LIFE 02-10-2007, 01:34 AM Good to know SteveJ. Thank you for your help...
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 11:08 AM In the the pro non-sunday race events it's 103

That doesn't help him much...:rolleyes :D
jrkoupe 02-10-2007, 12:42 PM as Steve said..I also think its 89-91 ish.....
jus do what alot of loud cars do.....muffle it if you have to......pick up a tailpipe ext for a few bucks at Autozone.........and use a set screw or clamp.
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 12:44 PM More of a noise is noise why shoudn't it be the same for everybody statement I guess. Except for the Sunday rule.
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 12:48 PM That is a good tip. If I can add to it a 90 degree turn down aimed to the oppisite side of the track from where the meter is is usually worth about 5db. If they measure in the paddock aim them straight at the ground.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 12:49 PM They are allowed to have unmuffled events there at select times in the year.
The church down the street is the reason for the sunday rule, and only the big/pro events get to be unmuffled...that is why it does not help the OP.
I don't think the db limit is 90+, i'm pretty sure its 85-89, I think they lowered it to the bottom end of that scale in the last couple years.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 12:53 PM That is a good tip. If I can add to it a 90 degree turn down aimed to the oppisite side of the track from where the meter is is usually worth about 5db. If they measure in the paddock aim them straight at the ground.
They measure from both sides and don't tell you where its being measured from.
Pointing it to the ground will in many cases not lower the db limit, and in some case it can hurt your chances of avoiding getting blackflagged. The ground will bounce the sound right off it, not offering much of any absorption. But it depends on what track you are at and the height of the db meter.
They do have resonated turndowns, and of course you could always supertrap it...
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 01:03 PM In Ga cup in a paddock test it took a car from failing to passing for me. The meter was approx 1 foot off the ground and approx 5 feet back. In club racing they must not be worried about people making the show. In the pro world it's public knowledge where, when, and how the tests will be performed.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 01:18 PM I'm pretty sure for sunday events at limerock they take the readings at various places because they can't piss off the town/church.
We've had $500k+ cars at limerock we've had to put pineapple cans on to get it to pass sound ;)
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 02:49 PM Steve J you need to understand I've done nothing but pro racing for the past 17 yrs of my life. I show up here to pass the time and learn more about club level BMW racers. My current business ventures involve where PTG left off. I'm not here to solicit business just to understand where the needs are and maybe throw in some advise if people are truly concerned with the next level.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 02:53 PM Ok, not questioning your experience or knowledge, I'm merely speaking from an engineering stand point, and my experience at events at limerock for the past 8 years. There is a difference between pro race weekends and the DE's that this guy will be doing.
Whats your current business where PTG left off?
On topic though, I just read Limerock is 89 Decibels. It also depends on what club you are running with to determine how the sound will be metered and what day of the week you are running (not sure if they even have race events on sundays anymore).
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 03:12 PM A group of us that are no longer there have been teaming up for both pro and club level projects for shall we say properly funded individuals. Once again I'm not here to solicit business but if explained to me how without upsetting anyone I could supply contact info.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 03:15 PM Gotcha. Are you going to have a physical shop in Northern VA, or going to team up with an existing business in the area, as there are quite a few now.
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 03:28 PM Quite honestly once again not trying to upset anyone the shops/suppliers you guys have had to deal with don't have what we do. We are currently working out of our homes and doing fly in work. A full blown shop may evolve but currently other exhisting shops just want to market us and make the $ for themselves.
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 03:41 PM What do you mean? What shops don't have what that you do? What kind of product/service do you offer that is not available from anyone else?
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 03:53 PM Knowledge that evolves from a proper budget, a 20+ member team with an average 30yrs experience, and a scrap metal bin full of things that didn't quite work right.

is that with the kk center resonator? curious because my 2.5L ITS motor with full kk race system (no resonator) hits 102db regularly at scca events.
that is a huge sound difference from yours!
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 04:14 PM You should try to get onto another professional team then...
We tend to reveal who we are in real life on this subforum, as most of the clubracers have thier real name in thier username, care to share which team member you are from the former ptg-bmw race team?
What was your position/specialty?
(p.s. check your PM)

Straight 4x2.5" oval KK race system with a small borla in the rear. WCT 2.5L previously revving close to 8k, I only revved to 7k (save motor life).
It depends on which club it is, and if you are in a pack of cars, what rpm you are at when you pass the db reader, etc.
Do Dis 02-10-2007, 04:22 PM Steve J this is my last intrusion on this thread but please also remember we race to eat, not to sell parts or services. When we didn't win it was simply who's fault was it? After our numerous championships losing was not acceptable. How's your daily stress level?
Steve J. 02-10-2007, 04:25 PM I understand, and respect PTG's success as a team over the last decade.
My daily stress level is not bad, I'm still young, but I try not to stress out over much...when you stress out you make mistakes, and take years off your life. Stress kills...
I sent you a PM. (Press reply and then type a response)
