Dark Helmet 02-09-2007, 01:58 PM I miss my E28 so bad...
martyanderson10 02-09-2007, 07:29 PM Not very familiar with the e28. What is the deal with the bumpers on these cars. I have been looking at some on Ebay and Auto trader and they all have what I assume is the stock bumper that looks horrible jutting out about 8" from the grill. I love the red one posted on here and the black one because they don't have that type of bumper. It is body color and tucked in and completly changes the looks. What type of mod is this and what does it cost to do. I would love to have one of these but I can not handle the ugly bumpers on the ones I have seen.

US bumpers vs. Euro bumpers
and holy... I've never wanted an e28 as bad as I have after seeing the OP's. The older 5 series look so much better than the new ones.
martyanderson10 02-09-2007, 08:26 PM Thanks for the explanation. Where do you get the euro bumpers, how much are they? I will buy an e28 if I can make the mod for a reasonable $ amount. If not I would not own one with US bumpers, they look horrible, what was BMW thinking?! That has got to be one of the worst styling jobs on a safety bumper I have ever seen (and there were some bad ones on US cars in the early 70s). Other than that I love the styling on these cars!
theseeker411 02-09-2007, 08:42 PM Euro bumpers run anywhere from 500 to 1000 bucks for the set. Plus you need euro turn signals, a euro lower valance/modified U.S. valance, and brackets to hold the actual bumper. Another option is putting e34 bumper covers on. All you need to do is weld some studs to the body so you can mount the covers. Both of these options offer no protection for the car, btw.
Or you could just paint the US bumpers black and tuck 'em. I personally prefer U.S. bumpers since they offer a bit more protection. And if the looks are what's keeping you away from one of the best driving 5 series, well then I don't know what to say.
martyanderson10 02-09-2007, 09:25 PM Tucking them might be an option. I am very experienced at fabricating. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the looks of the e28. It is just the US bumpers that I don't like. Are the e28s lower tech and cheaper to maitain than my e34? Did they have the same motors as the e34? I have a lot to learn about the e28 but I think I will buy one after I add an e38 to my collection (or before if I stumble on a good deal first). I am so bitten by the BMW bug that I am seriously considering selling my collection of old Detroit iron and replacing them with bimmers.
bmwe28boy 02-09-2007, 11:32 PM Some U.S. bumpers look pretty good on the car. Here is an example of one that looks the part:

martyanderson10 02-09-2007, 11:51 PM Thats better. Maybe painting them body color is the trick. I will probably tuck them and paint them body color. Thanks: Marty
atl530i 02-10-2007, 12:09 AM Very nice E28s
theseeker411 02-10-2007, 12:45 AM Add a 535is/M5 front airdam, makes a huge difference.
If by lower tech you mean simpler to work on, then yes they are better than an e34. If you decide to get an e28, make sure it is a 535i or 535is. They had the M30b34 "big six" 3.4L 6cyl.
e34life 02-10-2007, 05:59 PM wow i really want a e28 after seeing that black m5
Tried to post a photo of mine but I get a message saying I don't have permission..........

I love your car!!!!
puppypilgrim 02-13-2007, 03:22 PM The older 5 series look so much better than the new ones.
They are also a LOT more nimble than E34s and E39s. Carving up a canyon road, they are a lot more responsive. On my E34 Alpina, you can certainly feel a lag between turning the steering wheel and the car responding.
Mless5 02-14-2007, 01:40 AM You can kill the feeling if your tires are too wide. I have 245/50 all around on my 535 (got them for free) and steering definately feels slow even with all new front end.
Otto Krosse 02-14-2007, 07:09 PM Here are a few pics of my daily driver. This sure is a blast to drive! :D

e39dream 02-15-2007, 05:10 PM theres a rough one on craigslist chicago for 1500 bucks.. automatic though
Otto Krosse 02-15-2007, 09:31 PM M6 in AZ, I'll buy yours from you when are ready ;)
I'll take that as a compliment, but I would sell my 88 M6 before I'd sell the 5er! The 5 is something I can drive daily (with few worries), the M6 is a weekend warrior with 60K miles on the clock. I wouldn't want to drive it every day, especially in the Phoenix area.
Besides, I waited 12+ years for this very 535is, and since I have owned it for just under a year there is virtually no chance I am selling any time soon.
BTW, cool looking Alpina E34...I just love white BMWs! :cool
