I love fast wagons, but I feel like they just diluted the cache of the M5 by producing a wagon.

Hard to dilute the cache of car that's going to go for close to $100k IMO.

the 5er wagons have never lived up to the original... the E34s were timeless, the E39s OK, and the E60s, while nice... still need to see Dr. 90210 BADLY

People just don't understand how wagon's are perceived in Europe. They are not soccer mom cars. It's a totally different market, where many households only have one car mainly due to space constraints. If you want an M5 that will haul 4 people and their luggage to the south of france, you need an M5 Touring. SUV's just won't fit in the garage, so you gotta go wagon. Same thing goes for why hot hatches are the thing to have over there. It makes perfect sense if you don't think like an american.

I'd drive one. If someone else would pay for it. Owning a 540iT it's easy to understand. A very versitile vehicle. Handles just like the sedan, but holds a lot more.

Just with the meager 540iT, I love the expression of all the ricers when I simply blow away their mega winged - coffee can exahust cars, with a stock station wagon!

+1000. Americans can never understand the true value of estates thanks in part to GM and Chrysler with the introduction of SUVs and Mini-vans. A touring estate is essential to Europeans. Futhermore, a ultra-performance touring estate sets the tone for all European car makers. Audi RS2 with Porshce technology, RS4 2001 model, and the S4 and S6 avant, Mercedes e55 amg touring, BMW M5 touring, and Volvo v70r all hot wagons. But american love big hunks of metal that clusters the highway with their slow snail reflects, while Europeans love true performance and pratical cars

I personally love the sport wagons like the 528/540/M5, S4/S6 Avant and even meager sport wagons like he old Mazda Protege 5. They look great, perform as wells as their sedan counterparts yet are so much more versatile. In America its not only the SUVs and cross overs that affect the image of the wagon, but think back to the 70's and 80's and cars like the Caprice or Crown Vic wagons with the fake wood and the handling of a boat.

What will it take for BMW to import this car? A letter writing campaign? Deposits? Blood samples? I want to trade in my S4 Avant for something larger and there is NOTHING in the market in the way of a performance wagon with a manual transmission....

As a postscript... Was there ever a 545 or 550 wagon with a stick-shift?

I love the s4 avant, you're lucky to have one. A few days ago My friend was telling me that his favorite wagon is the s4. When I told him about the m5 wagon, He went nuts!
