Is there a step between using a clay bar and using an abrasive polish to remove water spots from the paint? I'd like to avoid the abrasive polished for as long as possible.

Without other nasty chemical abrasives... nope. Sorry, gotta do some work to get results. Once you get them off, keep them off! It'll save time and effort in the long run.
