Yesterday -

Porsche 944 Turbo - From a dead start at a light with him on my left. 1st gear was shitty, spinning and he got the jump on me. 2nd was spinning initially, caught traction and he was still with me. Third was solid and I started to drop him fast and then he let off. I was surprised that he kept with me as well as he did. I will keep an eye out for him to see what modifications he has. I bet there are a bunch.

Was nice to run with another German sports car.

I gotta get the traction control working. Going with the 3.07 LSD too. That should make my first gear more usable.

This morning -

280 ZX Turbo - Well, on the way to work this morning and spotted a very nice 280 ZX going my direction. It looked like it might be a turbo by the wheels but I had to get closer to see for sure. Car was occupied by a solo guy and he was several cars in front of me. Luck would have it and he turned onto the onramp of I24 where I was going.

I was directly behind him on the onramp and could see that it was indeed a 280 ZX Turbo. Once on the freeway I accelerated to the far left lane and passed him in short order, he was surprised. I watch as the front of the car would porpoise up as he accelerated and then down as he shifted. He caught up quickly.

Due to traffic I had to bide my time until the left lane opened up. Once it did I gave the car some gas to get on boost and see what he would do. He was ready to go and I saw him immediately accelerate (nose went up again). I then took my cue and went WOT at 14.6 psi and just RAN away from him, talking bus lengths. He had his nose in the air again trying as he might. I shut it down at 120 and then settled into my normal 80 mph cruise and he stayed back not wanting another spanking.

Not really that big a deal, the 280 ZX turbo was a slug unless it was highly modified, this was obviously not. It was a nice looking car though.

When are your going to run with Todd (TCD)? Or have you already?

See my signature "85 M535i, TCD S2+, TO4E Boosted M106""Run" as "Run on the track" with Todd. I'm not sure who has the faster car. :dunno

Ahhhhhhhhh..don't know. With Todd's experiance on the drag strip, I am sure he would be faster than me. I should put him in my car to see what it can run.

I will be putting it on the dyno soon and and tuning it to 20 psi. Will know the power then. I am expecting between 450 and 500 RWHP. Time will tell.

Cant say I'm very surprise. Sounds like a 944 with light bolt ons to me. Probably MAF and a K27.

What kind of HP you guys getting with mods? I was runing about 15 psi and should be around 360 RWHP (I have 298 RWHP at 7.5 psi, dyno verified). Will know for sure when I dyno the car next week.

MAF and K27 will get you mid-low 300whp range depending on boost. I put down 400whp on pump gas last year on a stock long block and headers. I know another member has broken 500whp on a stock long block. I never got to max out my setup and now it's all different. 944's also are lighter and have what I consider to be optimum highway gearing.

Cool to actually see a 280ZX on the road. My turbo swap ZX was ran 13.7's @ 105MPH with a decent amount of mods but no block/head work. I could have probably squeezed more out of it but feared high boost. I miss it. FYI, all early Z's had very bad aerodynamics and are not fast past 100MPH.

Sounds like you have a quick 5.

Ive known 951s with stock k26/8 to be able to boost up to 300 WHP with stock internals, course there running 18 psi.

Blown 5's are nuts. Got a 91? Dinan 535 at the shop one time on 8 psi and it was sick... Had been in magazines and stuff.. very intense. Low boost was really really nice still...

Thank you. I have the upmost respect for the 944 driver. It was a hell of a ride. I hope to meet him again soon.

Great run! I've always wanted a 951!

Maybe this year along with the E46.

Sounds like you have quite the car yourself. Do you have a link with some pics or info?

In my opinion, the original Z's were better looking, but 280zx's were much better with aerodynamics. The turbos were one of the fastest cars for their time with 180hp and ~2825lbs. This was at a time when new emissions laws killed performance. Pretty good potential for more power too, but the real beauty of the first two generations is in their light weight, IRS with 50/50 distribution and being able to fit almost anything in that engine bay, like a healthy v8.

I have a lot of respect for the 951. My brother had an '86 944 Turbo and I still love that car to this day. Nice to see some people out there are putting down close to 500 whp, or more!
