I sold my M44 with trans and JB Racing flywheel + low miles SPEC stage II clutch for $400. I probably should of sold the flywheel for $400 and waited on someone to pay more for the motor/trans.....but I had a local buyer and it was an easy deal.

WOW

Someone got a bargain.

It's stories like this that make the cost of a swap impossible to predict. If you take a hands-off approach and just go to a local shop and say "I want to do this", they will quote you some astronomical price.

However, if you are more hands-on, have some mechanical knowledge, and can at least coordinate the work effectively, you'll save a bunch. Also look out for local bargains like above.

Search ebay and craigslist for engines, find a good machine shop that can fabricate/modify parts for you, and a good indie mechanic who likes the idea enough to cut you a break on the labor, and you're miles ahead.

Buy a donor car and have your original engine, plus a bunch of extra parts to sell after your swap. It's more capital intensive, but cheaper after you recoup part of your costs by selling off parts. Good sources of parts cars are your local NASA or SCCA chapter, and of course your CCA chapter.

Staying with a BMW engine, you're more likely to get cooperation from the CCA than us heretics putting less worthy powerplants in sacred cars. (J/K)

Word. I did all the wrenching myself and still spent $$$$ on the swap.

getting a s50/52 will be really expensive to get the motor, get a 328 and do a odb1 swap. 328 with odb1 will take a stock s52, keeps up with a heavily modded s52. you can find 328 motors with wire harness for around $800, very easy to do the odb1, all you need is the odb1 wiring harness, you can use the odb2 cop, use the odb1 sensors ( theres a thread on this), pick up a chip for around $300. i think the best bang for you buck would be a 328 with odb1 conversion

How much for a 5-speed to go with this setup? And how much HP are we talking? (NA, no FI).

Thanks!
