Saturday was a perfectly typical So Cal day here....sunny and warm. I left my house in my 335i coupe to run to the post office and bank. As I drove off, a yellow light indicator came on. I don't know what it was since I don't carry the manual in my car, but my thoughts were to drive by the dealership after running to the bank to have them look at it.

Well, my poor car never made it out of the bank parking lot. I backed it out of its parking spot, and it stalled. Then yellow "service engine soon" light came on, though I figured that out on my own. :p

Started it up again, and it stalled. After about 4 tries, was finally able to move it back into the parking spot, and pressed the SOS button for BMW Assist. After a lovely ride with the tow truck operator two hours later, my car and I made it to the dealership where they went to work on finding out what was wrong.

They gave me a shiny new 328i to drive around while they work on my poor car. As of now they don't know what the problem is, though. Has anyone else had their car just die on them with no notice? The car has 5K on it, and except for the occasional sprint to get onto the freeway, I don't really drive it hard enough to cause any worry.

Maybe the engine went into a coma from lack of use? :stickoutt

I had a similar experience about two months ago, but my car wouldn't start at all. As it turned out, the component that controls the electronic steering wheel locking mechanism had burned out, which was telling the car that the steering wheel was locked when it wasn't. The car was in the shop for four days while the dealership and Puma(OEM) fought over who was gonna pay the $3000 to replace the part. Not the greatest experience I had, but I haven't had any problems since I got the car back...knock on wood.:)

I wonder if so many of BMW's electronic problems are because they try to use German electronics? We all know quality Japanese components are best... :)

I don't think we all know that.

Quick update on the status of my car....they are talking with BMW of North America on what to do, they reprogrammed it, did the complete systems check, etc, and it still isn't running. They expect another status update by Wednesday, but so far they're stumped. :(

I miss my car.

My 2007 335i w 4000 mi died too and had to be flat bedded to dealer. Car lost all power started running on 3 cylinders. It thought I blew the engine the first time it happened.

First time they replaced main computer (DME unit). It took 2 weeks to diagnose. Then it happend a second time. This time they diagnosed that a fuel injector was not properly grounded and was shorting out the DME. Just got it back today so will see how it goes.

The dealer gave me a loaner and was great trying to resolve the problem...but it took awhile since they had to consult w/GMBH. One thing about BMW is that their service is impeccable, even though the cars are buggy sometimes. I've had Hondas to Porsches and BMW has best service.

Still love the car despite the problems. Im hoping this will be the end o

... I miss my car.

Please don't whine like a schoolgirl that you are 'stuck' driving a 328i - it doesn't have the same power, or options, etc, etc. That's really frickin' annoying.

I do hope that they find the problem with your car and return it soon, however. :D

I had a similar problem. The dealer ordered a new high speed fuel pump. Problem corrected, 5 days down time. They loaned me a 530xi.

Yeah. Word is that they've been having some issues with the high pressure pumps not pushing as hard as they should be...

just a fyi, BMW and PuMA work together, puma needs information from the dealer about the vehicle through FASTA data. and then authorizes the replacement of the steering column. they never fight about it, they give the go ahead, and information to fix the vehicle.

How many people out there have purchased the 335I and regret it due to problems that have accured with the car? over heating, wet floor, seat belt arm failed, etc...

I expect that by being the first to accept new technology I will bear the brunt of the problems with the technology until those issues are worked out in future releases. I have been in technology for over ten years and this principle is widespread. nature of the beast. The new 335i is an amazing car in my mind. I would accept the fact of a few hiccups just to have the car but that is me.

Sorry to hear those of you that are having problems. mine took a few turnovers in the snow yesterday and I have to admit...I was a little antzy.

I always fall back on the have a good relationship with your dealer rule. If problems progress I would even chat with the original sales person to see if they can up class you on a loaner. If they are sticking you in a festiva and you drive a 335i, I would cut through the BS and go directly to BMW NA...but thats me.

good luck, hope you get your wheels back soon.

The key is what the dealer does for you when a problem arises. I ACCEPTED new technologies in my 04 Audi A8 and ran into some "interesting" issues. Audi plain-out stinks when it comes to dealer service. Hopefully, BMW doesnt suffer from the same thing.

Got the car back last Friday, they did replace the part that controls the fuel. It took a week for them to diagnose and repair the problem. But the check engine light keeps coming on intermittently, so this morning its back at the dealer to see if its related to the repair, or if its an entirely different problem (i.e. bad sensor). It's an annoying problem since one of the safety features is that it cuts power to the engine. I'm happy the car doesn't blow up, but it does take a little fun away.

The dealer has been fantastic about taking care of the car and its problems. The shop foreman knows the car and me now, so he'll take the time to visit and let me know where things stand. He had just returned from Germany for training, and said that BMW is really looking closely at issues with the 335i because its such new technology, yadda yadda yadda. As inconvenient as it is when its in the shop, its soooo worth it to me when I'm driving it. :)

Funny, the dealer gave me the exact same loaner car that I had last week. So I'm gonna whine that I miss my car again. :( The 328i is a great car, but you might feel the same as I do if you're used to driving the 335i....

Now if they gave me one of the shiny new M5s to drive.....hehe..... ;)

I agree that if you're an early adopter of new technology, you have to put up with a few bugs....the 335i is an awesome car to drive and totally worth the few glitches Ive had to put up with. The dealer does make the difference too. Ive had terrible service from Porsche, BMW has far superior service than any other manufacturer out there.

I agree. They have the best service. I also like their warranty plans compared to most manufacturers. Thats why I chose a bimmer.

IMO he can whine all he wants until the dealership gets his car right. He paid for a 335....not a 328. Big difference. Last year when I bought my '06 GS430 it was in the dealership constantly for little annoying things. I had to drive a Lexus is250 which could hardly get out of its own way. At first I didnt care since I was putting mileage (a lot of mileage!!!....over 2,000 miles in 3 weeks) on their car. Eventually though, I just wanted mine back since I was paying for it but not using it. VERY annoying.

ps.....i'm thinking of getting a 335 coupe 6spd soon :redspot

At least they're loaning him a car. Just because it doesn't have the power or options that his car has, is no reason to whine. Now if they loaned him a Chevy Cavalier....

I also have a 335i and my car did somewhat the same thing except i was able to limp it to the dealership. They had my car for a MONTH just to find out that one of the fuel pumps went bad. They put a new one on and I haven't had a problem since.

just so you guys know, we are trying to fix cars with our hands tied behind out backs. BMWNA uses PUMA as a source for approval of replacing failed parts and diagnosis. everything has to go thru PUMA. i hope that you get your car back, in excellent service condition and remember to support your local dealership, because if we have a good time together with you the first time, we usually go out of our way from there on. thanks.

I think the reason you are not getting a 335i as a loaner is because they are in high demand, so they are giving you the top model which is not as popular. I've been trying to get a test drive in the 335i coupe, but its impossible unless i purchase it and wait for it to come, then I could drive it home. Though i've driven the 335i sedan which was really nice.

That's interesting, according to my CA, they got a 328i and 335i Coupe as test drive models and were not allowed to sell them. I drove both, the 335 was space/coral. Conversely, they did not have any 335 Sedans that I could drive at least in MT, so I bought mine without ever having driven the exact combination of 335/Sedan/MT.
