The other morning our 2007 328i Sport Wagon was making a rythmic clanking/clicking noise as it backed out of the garage. The noise went away soon and hasn't come back. Is this the emergency brake system adjusting itself or should I be headed for the dealership to get this checked out? I'm new to BMWs so this is all new to me.

was it raining when you put it away? it's possible that the parking brake or even rear rotors got a bit of surface rust on them. it happens fairly often and after the first time or two of braking it will have cleaned the rust off.

It could have been the neighbors cat's collar hitting the ground as the tires turned. But I think your explaination is more likely.

Thanks guys, it had been raining when it was put away so it probably was the rotors. We're probably just keeping too close an eye on the new toy.

no worries... if it's damp when you put the car away (you live in washington so I'll suspect that is fairly often) just take a look at the rotors before you move it. chances are that they will have some rust on them almost every time.
