Hey guys... I just received a DEI Remote Start (Valet model 562T).

I'm a huge DIYer, and I'm curious if anyone has tried tackling a Remote Starter on their own, especially a model that might be similar to mine (even though any help would be nice).

I've searched and searched, and found a lot on alarms, but not so much on remote starters.

Can anyone offer any good advice or technical know-how on this?

I refuse to pay to have someone service my car, and I know that I will take more pride in my work than anyone I would pay to do this. I'm confident that I can handle this, but any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

I did it on my Acura and it was not bad. Anyone with basic stereo install skills can do it. Most of the kits I've seen come with very detailed instructions that show exactly what each wire does. The complication comes when you try to use it with your factory security system. I think the best way to integrate a remote start is to get one with its own security system and bypass the factory system. Maybe someone else will comment on this.

Thanks for the info. Luckily my 318 doesn't have a security system. I'm not even installing an alarm, it's just a keyless entry/remote start. I'm not big on aftermarket alarms. Seems like sometimes they are more of a nuisance instead of a help.

Anyone else?

If you dont need a security system, it is easy. I say go for it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm gonna get started on this thing probably Thursday. Maybe tomorrow if I have time.

It'd be nice if there was a step-by-step for this. If I'm feeling ambitious I might take pictures and write one up.

It isn't all that hard to do but it is hard to do well. To make a nice clean install really only comes with experiance.

+1 ...just make sure you properly fuse power wires and solder all connections (especially ignition harness wires) to avoid problems.

All the power wires come with inline fuses with the kit. So that's a +

Any clue where I can find the tach wire...? It says behind the instrument cluster... and that's it black... but damn there's a lot of wires back there!

There aren't that many black wires in there though! Check with a meter. You can also find the tack wire in the splice box over the fuse box. There is a black box there. There is a set of black/white and black wires, you can tap into any one of the black wires there (not the black/white)

Finally found it with my multimeter... Now to tackle the stupid lock/unlock... I don't get it, my remote start has two wires for the door locks... a blue that says (+) LOCK (-) UNLOCK, and a green that says (-) LOCK, (+) UNLOCK...

So... I have two wires for my power locks... white/red to Lock, and blue/red to unlock...

How do I know which one goes to which?

Also...what's with this Door Trigger stuff... I don't have a door trigger wire in my remote start wiring schematics... But my printouts and information list the door trigger wires. What's the deal with this?

Rather than using 4 wires, most alarms/remote starts these days use only two wires. Each wire provides a positive pulse for unlock and negative pulse for lock. Since the E46s have positive locks, you would use the blue for lock and green for unlock. I would suggest using diodes to "block" the negative pulses.

Door trigger is used on alarms. If your remote start doesn't have the input, don't hook it up.

CA1242, your help is awesome! I still am having problems though, even hooked up that way- Do all e36's have power locks?

edit: mine is an e36, btw. i don't know if it matters

I am sorry, I meant to say E36. E46s have negative locks, so what I said is still true. Here's a little more info that might help:

You are missing a diode on the other wire, but should work the way it is. You can always test by hooking up a test light to +12 on one end and touching the wire with the other end. ... keep in mind that e36s locks will not work if any door (and maybe even hood/trunk, can't remember) are open.

CA, ARE YOU SERIOUS????????
Time to go CLOSE my doors and test it...

I've had this thing rigged up every different way (by the way I knew that diode was missing, I was testing it without)

Thanks for your help, I'll let you know in a few

Ok, she runs and it works.

Just FYI for anyone who searches and finds this in the future. MAKE sure your GROUNDS are good! I had problems with mine and it wouldn't let my remote start actually START, but everything else worked.

If anybody needs help, my aim name is in my profile... hit me up.

HUUUUGE thanks to Vinh Nguyen! That dude helped me out a lot and knows his shit!

Time to go sit in the garage and continuously remote start/stop my car for fun...... HAHAHAHAHAH

Answer me this fella's...

Can I get the horn to honk if I add a relay to it? (Because the horn doesn't honk when the key isn't in the ignition...ever, so I don't get a chirp when i lock/unlock my doors)

you could buy an alarm siren, there really cheap, and just wire it to that. glad to see you have everything working

ca1242

You could... the same negative trigger that honks the horn itself, could trigger a relay and provide power to the horn. Just a matter of finding constant 12v and running a wire to the horn. You would have to cut the horn wire to avoid feedback.
