Hello,

The new M6 still has its original exhaust and was supposedly legally registered in Massachusetts. It shipped along with an entire catalytic system which I have stored in my mechanic’s attic.

Do you think that this car was federalized as non catalytic in 1985 or, after taking delivery was the euro exhaust secretly reinstalled? I only glanced at the catalytic before it was put away, but the catalytic system does appear to have had some use; at least it was not all shiny and pristine looking...come to think of it, I see no evidence of federalization on this car whatsoever: bumpers, glass, exhaust: were there any conversion requirements in early 1985? VIN date is December 1984 and it was brought in upon manufacture.

Thanks, I’m working up to the required number of posts so I can put photos up.

N6

Meanwhile the 635 sits only distantly remembered but receiving lots of TLC at the mechanic. I apologize but I have taken to refering to it as the Toyota.

I apologize but I have taken to refering to it as the Toyota. Cat was probably removed after compliance. But I can tell you that the thing about glass is not true. BMW glass sometime in 1978/79 changed and complies with Fed Regs. I brought my 80 Euro back and Federalized it myself. Glass was accepted and is still in the car 25 years later. I had to remove the headlights and install sealed beams (restored later) add side marker light front and rear, add bumper reinforcements front & rear, add door braces inside the doors, and change the speedometer to read MPH on the outside & KPH on the inside (Opposite of the Euro speedometer). Not reinstalled because I had to have the speedometer converted at the time. IIRC that was all I did to the car to get it registered and clear on the import regulations. I had a limited time to do all this but I do not remember exactly how much. Might have been 90 days from release from customs to submittal of all documentation. This was all 25 years ago and regulations change. BTW the Cat was not required by the federalization process at the time, but Arizona would not let it pass emission inspection without one when emission inspections got serious in AZ sometime about 85/86.
