View Full Version : ZF Manual Transmission with all new seals and new bearing!
olsen185 02-02-2007, 05:27 PM I am selling my ZF 5 speed manual transmission out of my 328i. The transmission is currently at the transmisssion shop being finished. I had planned on using it in my car but the shop was unable to complete it before my trip to Miami so I had to buy another used one.
The transmission has a new input shaft seal, output shaft seal, new front bearing (the bearing is directly behind the input shaft seal, I forget the name of it), new guide tubes (reverse and 5th gear), all new external seals.

325isracer 02-02-2007, 07:37 PM Does it come with clutch/flywheel?
olsen185 02-02-2007, 07:59 PM I have my old DM flywheel and stock clutch. I'de have to check the flywheel for cracks, I'm not sure the condition. The clutch was replaced after 2500 miles due to it slipping under boost. However the flywheel was not part of the $600 price.

olsen185 02-02-2007, 10:28 PM I should have mentioned in the first post that I have spent over $300 in new seals, a new bearing, and labor. I spent $600 on the used transmission for my roadtrip. I am just trying to recoup some of my money.
sutilamill 02-02-2007, 10:40 PM will it fit in 92 325i?
olsen185 02-02-2007, 11:26 PM The transmission should.... I'm not sure about the driveshaft though.
olsen185 02-05-2007, 12:29 PM This tranny will also have some sort of warranty from the trans shop.

bmwtuner325is 02-06-2007, 01:34 PM will it fit in 92 325i?
not to steal the thread but maybe it will help others out......the trans will fit with some clutch modification....the driveshaft needs to be made longer by about 5 inchs or so....any decent machine shop can do it for you....the shifter itself has to be changed (the easiest way i found was to get a ///M3 SSK) everything else should be the same. I just went through this swap so if anyone has any questions I may be able to help.
olsen185 02-06-2007, 04:03 PM Update:
The owner of the trans shop just called, the transmission is done!!
olsen185 02-14-2007, 01:29 PM I picked up the transmission yesterday. Here are some pics:

Well I did some research and found that a lot of transmisson shops in my area wouldn't work on ZF transmissions (because they are a bitch to work on). I found out that the owner of my local Aamco has a lot of experience with ZF's. If you need any work done it is the Aamco in Pt. Pleasant, NJ. Ask for Dan and tell him Erik sent you.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately Pt. Pleasant is sort of out of the way or me (about 1 hour). I took my tranny apart and the input shaft gear on the rear end of it fell off and I can't get the gears apart to put it back together. It's tempting to buy your tranny to save me the trouble, but it would be a waste of my perfectly good tranny (except the input shaft of course). Plus I'm already over budget on my project, lol.

Rob,
Good luck with the tranny, you are a very brave man!!! I saw my tranny while it was apart and I couldn't believe how many pieces there were. Do you have a tranny assembly diagram or any of the special tools?
Well if you get frustrated you can always buy mine and have someone else assemble yours at their leisure. If you look for a shop just make sure that they have experience with the ZF tranny, you don't want them learning on yours. When your old one is complete you can sell it and make back your money. Just a thought.

Was the shop able to order all the new seals themselves or did you have to provide them with them?

I had to provide them.

The tranny is back from the shop and waiting to be sold. I'm waiting on a phone call from someone local, but other than that it is up for grabs.

Just to clarify and answer a few frequently asked pm's, this transmission is considered up for sale until money is exchanged. I will not hold this for anyone, and there is no calling dibs. Money talks!! I would prefer to sell to a local buyer before I sell to someone out of state (so I don't have to ship). If you are out of state and would like to purchase this transmission my zip code is 08723 and the transmission weighs approximately 80-90lbs. Buyer arranges, and pays for shipping. Due to the weight and size it needs to be shipped via freight shipping.
Thanks for all the interest guys!!
If there are anymore questions ask away!!

pm me with bottom line price, picked up -cash.
I'm about 15 mins south on the Parkway from tinton falls. $600 is pretty much my bottom line. In order to go on my trip my father bought a used tranny from a junk yard for $580 without any new seals. I am trying to recover the money that he put out. I have over $300 into this transmission in new seals and work. If you are looking to save $20, you can pick up a transmission from the junk yard. The place we got mine from had 3 others for the same price $550 plus tax ($580). With all the work done to this trans $600 is a killer price already.
If I had the time, I would swap the junk yard tranny for this one and sell the junk yard tranny for $580. But time is short since my wife's about to pop out a kid within a week or so.
Let me know,
Erik
olsen185 02-22-2007, 01:17 PM I would like to sell this before my wife goes into labor. Someone needs this, come on guys.
CRYPTiC 02-22-2007, 01:57 PM Why did you rebuild? This is the first time (in my short BMW ownership) that I've heard of someone rebuilding. How many miles did it have before the rebuild? Any grinding/notchiness? Did the shifter rest in 5th when cold?
olsen185 02-22-2007, 02:56 PM Why did you rebuild? This is the first time (in my short BMW ownership) that I've heard of someone rebuilding. How many miles did it have before the rebuild? Any grinding/notchiness? Did the shifter rest in 5th when cold?
It wasn't rebuilt, it was refreshed. What happened was I removed the tranny to install a clutch/flywheel combo. While I had it out I figured I would replace the input and output shaft seals as well as some preventitive maintenence (5th gear/ reverse). Everything went smooth except the input shaft seal. No matter what I did I could not get the seal to sit flush, as a result it leaked. Also when I pulled the input shaft seal I nicked the seal in the bearing directly behind it. So after a few tries I decided to let a professional take care of everything. When the shop cracked open the trans to replace the bearing that I nicked, they replaced all the seals again. Unfortuneately for me the shop was unable to finish the tranny before my planned road trip to Florida.
The transmission had about 115,000 miles on it before it was pulled. I had no 5th gear or reverse issue when cold. There was no grinding or any other problem with the transmission.
CRYPTiC 02-22-2007, 04:52 PM I'd buy this if it didn't cost an arm and a leg to ship. :(
Good luck!

If my deal falls through with the other tranny, I'll send you a PM. I'd prefer to get a low mileage tranny, but I need my car done by the end of March :(

Summit Point in West Virginia on April 28, 29, and 30 with the DelVal Chapter of BMWCCA :)
I tested the tranny and actually the shop switched up the 5th and reverse pin springs. It was no biggy and i was able to fix it when I got it home.

Wrong.
I just installed this same transmission in my 92 325is this past weekend.
1st - No clutch modification is needed period. I installed a stock clutch kit and it works like a charm.
2nd - Stock driveshaft works fine as well - no modification needed.
3rd - To use the stock drive shaft just swap the output flange from your Getrag onto the ZF. Only thing you must do is modify the ZF output flange nut by shaving 3mm off each edge of the nut thus making it a 30mm nut like the one pulled off the Getrag.
Thanks to misinformation I got off this board earlier I now have a M3 drive shaft & guibo sitting in my garage I don't need and can't use.
EgyptianPrince 06-10-2007, 09:19 PM Hello i am interested in your transmission, can you please let me know if its still for sale? email me Yahoodihunter007@aol.com
udm95 06-10-2007, 10:45 PM See post #35 above - it was sold in March.
jeremy73 04-26-2008, 05:03 PM is the input shaft titanium?
