Hey guys,

I'm a new owner of a used m3 :) and have enjoyed reading and learning from these forums. My car is due for an oil change, and so I called Stevens Creek BMW to ask how much they sell oil and the oil filter for--they quoted about 10 dollars per liter of oil, and almost 20 dollars for the oil filter. So I bought the oil filters from Wheel Autohauss, and planned to stop by the dealer to pick up the bottles of oil. Well, yesterday, I went during my lunch hour, asked for 7 bottles of oil, went to the cashier to pay, and it came out to 17 dollars per bottle...I went back to the guy at the parts counter and he saw me approaching and told me "no, it's the right price...believe me, you've got "liquid gold" there..." I told him that I had called the dealership a week prior and was told they run about 10 dollars per bottle. He replied that is the price of 'regular synthetics'...uhh, no it isn't. What a pain. Since I am planning to change the oil tomorrow, I didn't have enough time to order the oil online and have it shipped, so I just bought it. Last time ever for me.

For what it's worth.

Indeed. They dont called them "stealerships" for nothing. :) Buy whatever you can at other places. You'll definitely save money.

But thanks for pointing out the place. I'll avoid em. Specially since Im way down here.. :stickoutt

yea, i actually saw some praise for stevens creek parts department, but i don't see anything great about them. just another stealership parts department imho.

at one time, they had the oil on sale for i think $6 a bottle. i went back there a couple weeks after. it was no longer on sale. i asked how much they were. the guy said something like $10 each, which is a rip off, though still cheaper than your $17 quote!! said f that, and went and got some mobil-1 0w40.

I know most dealerships are expensive, but I went there a couple of weeks ago to check out some prices for some hardware and they were 3x what the list for on realoem.com.

So I just ordered it from Pacific BMW since I'm a cheap bastard and would rather pay less and wait.

I paid like 3 bucks for a .07 washer at my stealership! If you can wait, always buy from supporting vendors or online stores like bmaparts!
Damn! I thought my 2 gallons of amsoil was expensive (80bucks). You can wait a few days on the oil, its not going to destroy your motor. I'd say return it if you can and pick up something else either online or somewhere else.

Shouldnt have gave up like someone said; be assertive! GL

Thanks for the tips and places to avoid...definitely will take note.

Shragon, do you know if 0w40 is ok to use on an e46 m3? If so, let me know where you get yours from (I'm guessing any local auto store).

bmwaldo, I actually posted it on 3 forums, and you've replied to them as well, so "thanks for double posting". heh. Seriously, it's no big deal man. I'm just trying to spread the word.

Hey Phillipk, thanks for the heads up on pacific bmw...I'll keep them in mind next time.

And thanks Sr20fastback for the advice on staying away from east bay bmw.

nickdrivesm3, I guess you're right...although, I'm not sure what else I could have done, especially since I was on the clock and had to go back to work. I guess it's my fault for buying oil at the last minute for an overdue oil change.

94is, do you know what weight oil is used for her oil change? Is it 10w60?

Raoke, thanks for the tip... i got bmaparts bookmarked now. I'm definitely buying from online next time...it's just that I am 600 miles past an oil change, so I figured I needed to get the oil now so I can do the change this saturday--cuz I aint changing the oil on superbowl sunday. hah!

No, its not. I think I used 15w30 or something. Can't recall off hand. Btw, lubro moly makes a nice 10w60 that I believe are for the e39 m5 and e46 m3. You can order them online for about $30-35/5 liter jug.

Depending on miles its either 5w30-synthetic or 15w-40 non syn. Synthetic is likely more expensive @ ~$10 per.

Well if you have an e46 M3 then you DO NEED 10w60 because that is what they call for. ONLY PUT THIS OIL IN THAT MOTOR!!!!

The guy you talked to probably thought you had an e36 which uses 5w30 @ 10$ per.

I dont mean be a$$hole but it bothers me when people give up on a dealer. I could go on and on and on about stories of things we've done. I just did a valve job for a kid who has to drive across country to be at base by monday 6:00am. He left today at 10:30 from the MY dealer after I fixed his moneyshifted engine 3 days ago. Not to mention we cut him a deal on labor because all he had was 4500$ with all his stuff packed in the car.

Sorry for the rant but that was just an example of what we CAN do at a dealer.

Hey dude, since you go to stevens creek bmw. I am assuming you are from this general area or san jose, campbell, cupertino, saratoga...anyways, this area.

You should try buying your oil at a local shop, or store.

I buy Mobil1, Castrol Syntec and, AMSOIL 5-40 Synthetics, 8-10 quarts, I buy extras, just in case. I only pay about 60$-70$ each time.

I normally purchase my oils at WINCHESTER AUTO PARTS(Parts Plus) on winchester avenue, OR PARTS PLUS on Meridian and Branham.

If you are interested for more info, PM ME

I've walked away from Stevens Creek parts counter before. They've given me some awful dealer price on a part so I called BMA and bought the part for 30% less.

I did have a frustrating experience with my Alpina. Most parts are the same as on a e34 535i. I told the guy it's an Alpina with an Alpina vin number. He says "no problem" we have an Alpina parts catalog online. He puts in my vin and tells me I have a '83 735i. I say no, it's an Alpina vin, you're looking up a BMW vin. He asks why Alpina would re-use an old BMW vin. I tell him again, it's not a BMW vin and never has been. I finally gave up.

I went to BMW of Mountain View. The parts guy there was very cool. I told him what I had he he almost ran outside to look at the car. He told me he had sources for Euro parts and he would be glad to order them for me.

Crazy... I was behind you in line when you got that oil. The guy brought out the whole box and removed like 5 quarts and handed you the rest. That guy got a kick calling it liquid gold.

For a lot of stuff you will need for your M3 like oils, etc. make sure to check out Winchester Auto Parts as mentioned in another post. They are the only locals I know that carry Redline fluids.

Hey Packetpuppy, so that was you behind me huh? Heh, small world indeed.

(i'm cross posting the followup story...)

In case someone thought there was a simple miscommunication with the Stevens Creek BMW dealership: when I had called to find out how much they sold the oil for, like all dealers do, they asked for the year and make and model of my car. So whoever I spoke with over the phone *knew* that I was looking for oil for an e46 m3. He came back with the $10/bottle quote for 10w60. So there's no way it could have been a miscommunication, since that person clearly quoted me for oil to be used on an e46 m3.

I came back today after work, a guy with dark hair (the first guy had white/graying hair), kinda chubby, asked me if I needed help. I told him I just needed to return these bottles of oil I had bought 4 days ago. He asked me if I had found it cheaper elsewhere, and if so, where and for how much? When I told him, he said that they were "giving it away" and if that's the price, he'll go buy their whole inventory. I should have asked him "well if you're going to buy their inventory, are you going to mark your prices down then to reflect your cost?" But I didn't, since he was being somewhat cool with me. Took me all about 3 minutes to return the oil and be on my way. Ah well, lesson learned.

yea, stevens creek bmw is a jip.. i tried to buy some new windshield wipers the other day and they quoted me about $30 for EACH! on top of that, when the guy brought them out from the back, all it was, were some flimsy ass pieces of rubber that replaces the old rubber. I expected the whole wiper like how you usually get when you buy them from kragen or pep boys.

Ya I don't know that guys name, but he's pretty cool. He usually throws in small piece I pick up for free (coolant block washer, fuel door spring clip, etc.).

Get a BMWCCA membership too and they're supposed to give you 10% off as well. It helps when you have don't have time and need parts fast locally.

Check out bmw-auto-parts-dealer dot com and they have it listed for sale at 157.25. Hope this helps man.

Yea, looking at the various posts, I'm sure some of the guys working at various dealerships are cool guys, but calling a dealership to get a price quote and then later being told a different price, doesn't really give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

And like everywhere else, management can suck. heh.

you really need to take the realoem prices with a grain of salt. most of them are usually at or UNDER cost for some reason. Then again, some of them are way over retail too. I would only suggest using realoem as a basis for part numbers NOT for prices.

double check with your insurance and see if u have free glass replacement coverage, a lot of people have it included in their full converage policy and don't know it. shouldn't affect your premiums either.

Just a quick 2 cents...

BMW dealerships have 5 price levels:

A) the mark up retail (50% to 100% above B).
B) the retail (reference)
C) car club discount (10 % off B)
D) whole sale discount. (20~25% off B)
E) dealer's cost (30~40% off B)

If you walk in on any day, you get (A). If you just bought a car there, you get (A) or (B). If you know a thing or two about the car club, you get (C). If you have a shop, you get (D). The dealer's boss is your son/daughter, you get (E).

So does Mountain View only charge 18$ for an N52 oil filter? I'm pretty sure you can only get an N52 oil filter from the dealer. Which is why markup is so much. Why are you even changing your oil anyway? Don't you have a maintance warranty?

When we got there, we met with our service adviser and she started up the car and looked at the mileage and then told us, "your car isn't due for it's service, there's only 12xx miles on it." She seemed confused as to why we were there. We explained to her that it was for the 1200 mile service and that my car was a M Roadster and then she kinda got what we were talking about. We did all our stuff and then left the car there to get serviced.

When we got back, my bf asked to make sure they took off the rev limiter. The service adviser was once again confused regarding the rev limiter. It took some time to get it all straightened out, but then the one of the techs said it hadn't been done, so they had to take my car back and take it off.

Kinda sucked that we had to wait for them to take off the rev limiter, but at least we got to look at some of the cars in the lot...but still sucked that the service adviser was somewhat clueless.

Work on your math skills and don't buy from the dealer. Buy here instead (http://www.extremems.com/year-make.html). ;)

OK, The body nut is 15 times what cost is. I know because I have a friend at a dealership in Los Angeles. I usually buy larger parts form him. I called and asked about the body nut. They sell them for 20 cents. I was checking on some parts at BMW of Mountain View. I asked about the same part. They sell it for 60 cents. I know we're talking pennies but it's just one example. I'm redoing some door panels and I need 8 of these. I could go to Stevens Creek and spend over $20 or I could go to M.V. and spend less than $5.

Hey Greg,

Paul and Richard are usually pretty cool at the BMW Steven's Creek.

Franz and Patrick are cool at BMW Mountain View, but unfortunately they don't work the counter anymore, they like it better in the back.

How's the Alpina? I wanna give my car a run w/ yours once I get my motor back from Rebello :devillook They are taking their time and care with it :D

The Alpina is a blast. Let me know when your car is done :D,we'll see what happens. I know the parts guys don't set the prices. It was the older guy with glasses that helped me. The topic of this thread is about Stevens Creek BMW ripping people off. You shouldn't have to know somebody to get a fair price.

How damn how much was the actual quote then?!

Do you know what $4500 could get me...

The actual quote was over 6k, the poor kid was from North or South Carolina and was in the military. He needed to be back on the east coast in 6 days or he was in deep shit. He only had about 5k to his name. And that was to either fly back and get the car another time, or fix it and drive it back. I told him I could have it fixed for him in 3 days max and that should buy him enough time to drive back.

I got the car running in 2.5 days and he made it just in time.

For service, ask for Mike Kyle at Stevens Creek BMW.

Been working with him since he was at Allison's.

The fully synthetic oil from BMW costs $4 or $5 dollars a bottle.

They wanted to rip you off big time.

So does Mountain View only charge 18$ for an N52 oil filter? I'm pretty sure you can only get an N52 oil filter from the dealer. Which is why markup is so much. Why are you even changing your oil anyway? Don't you have a maintance warranty?

how does an oil filter go up from $12 to $20?? that's 67% increase in price!!

i do 7500 mile intervals on my car. dealer changes it every 15k, and i do the ones in-between.

i'm not the only one that feels like they rape people.

like i said, stevens creek bmw already lost my business for cars. the same goes for parts. i'm done with that place.

For whatever reason, the BMW 10-60 synthetic oil is astronomically expensive. BMA parts, which somebody here said is a good source for cheap parts, sells it for $16.97:

http://www.bmaparts.com/item.wws?mfr=GENUINE&sku=BMW086528&price=16.97&orpartno=1790665&cookieID=23C181ZOW23C182LT2&drillid=8&image=http%3A%2F%2Fcatimages2%2Esophio%2Ecom%2Fweb app%2Fwcs%2Fstores%2Fservlet%2Fimc%2Fimages%2Ftn%2 F07510009420%2Ejpg

THe "regular" BMW 5-30 synthetic is more like $7. Although BMA sells the LubroMoly 5-30 in a 5 liter jug for $52
http://www.bmaparts.com/item.wws?mfr=LUBRO%20MOLY&sku=ACC081732&price=52.01&orpartno=1659428&cookieID=23C181ZOW23C18CPM3&drillid=8&image=http%3A%2F%2Fcatimages2%2Esophio%2Ecom%2Fweb app%2Fwcs%2Fstores%2Fservlet%2Fimc%2Fimages%2Ftn%2 F1137%2Ejpg

So before you start ripping on the dealer, you might get the facts straight. (not that I'm partial to dealers, but my own independent BMW mechanic always asks me if I want the "regular" synthetic or the ridiculously expensive stuff)

I checked earlier today with my parts department. Customer pay price is ~16$ for an N52 filter. They said you either got marked up (someone dosn't like you) or the dealer does not do whole sale. So they mark up whatever they want (reasonably/not all things) to make money off every little thing. A lot of Orange County/LA dealers do not do whole sale. Its common across dealers in CA.

But that is just the way it is. Most you can do is leave the dealer, and end business.

Don't use 10W-60 unless you track your car hard!

Just buy 10-40 or 10-50 castrol from autozone @ $4-5 a bottle.
