Dallas police were searching Tuesday for the driver of a gray BMW that hit and killed two childhood friends stopped along Interstate 35E early Tuesday to rescue a man from a burning car.
Joseph Wood and Demont Matthews of Plano were struck as they stood alongside the burning vehicle in the northbound lanes of the interstate.
The 2002 Mitsubishi Galant caught fire after it rear-ended an 18-wheeler having mechanical problems on I-35E between Walnut Hill and Royal lanes, said Dallas police Lt. John Branton, a supervisor in the traffic division. The tractor-trailer was slowed or stopped.
While the two friends joined a third man trying to rescue the driver, a gray BMW, possibly a 2000 model, attempted to pass the disabled vehicle in the median and struck the three men, Lt. Branton said.

Straight up, I don't mean for this post to be a lecture, just a personal observation. As BMW fanatics, this story affects us all. I've already had someone ask me (jokingly) if I was "racing down Stemmons" on Monday night.
Of course none of us bought our cars with the intention to drive passively. I personally enjoy pushing the limits and derive a great deal of pleasure from the calculated risks I take. It's amazing how one slip, one bad judgment call can do so much damage. I've done some really stupid things before (most recently; blowing a shift and having to buy a brand new engine), but my greatest solace is that I've never seriously injured someone from my actions.
All it takes is one slip though. Please use your head, I know I will.
thanks for listening,
-Will
p.s. - flame away if you want, these are my guns and I'm stickin' to 'em.
