View Full Version : Sr20det in an e30
swimstarguy 01-31-2007, 01:23 PM I know this is blasphemy, but does any one know anything about putting an Sr20det into an e30? I've heard of a few people who've done this, but I haven't been able to find a write up on it.
What would I need to do this?
Is there any info avaliable online about this?

t0fudelivery 01-31-2007, 02:05 PM check up the forums in malaysia and other locations in the west pacific area. it is somewhat of a common swap in those areas because of the SR20DET is readily available in all of the nissan silvias.

Can't say that I know of any, but I'll look into it. Thanks.

I haven't seen an e30 swap yet but dgreen78 did an sr20 swap in his Z3. Hopefully Don will stop by and pass on some pics and stories of his experience.

deeda 02-01-2007, 12:34 PM There was one here in Boise Id
It was really nicely built and dyno'ed out at 500+ whp
He was running in the 10's
swimstarguy 02-01-2007, 02:04 PM That's why I'm liking the idea. The looks of a classic German car and an engine with a backing in gross unnecessary amounts of power.

swimstarguy 02-05-2007, 01:46 AM Score. I couln't find any info on this swap. I've been interested in it fow a while and I've been yelled at on most forums that I've asked about this... ^_^;
I'll try to keep updates on this if it looks like I'll go through with it.
raoke 02-05-2007, 05:18 AM There use to be a guy on here named bimitsubishi or something. Find him, hes got one.

tonyyy 02-08-2007, 12:47 AM I say, change it up a bit, instead of an SR, do a CA18DET swap. Can't go wrong with a cast iron block. :)

not sure tony, but i think the ca18 is only good for around low to mid 300 horse before running into problems... i may be wrong though.

I had a buddy that had his S12 w/ CA18 dyno in at 479 to the wheels at around 25-30lbs of boost. running 11's at the track. I'm not too sure if he had the bottom end built a bit or not.
But, parts ARE more readily available for the SR.
scabzzzz 02-08-2007, 01:44 PM I love SR motors. My buddy has a datsun 510 with a fully built sr20det. I watched it dyno like 394 to the wheels on low boost. haha. I would imagine it was feel about the same on an e30 chassis.

what are you planning on doing with the old setup?
prior 02-10-2007, 02:08 AM and is the new setup going to come anywhere close to the power that the sr20 was making?

Didn't they only make the ca18det for a year though?
479 hp sounds nice, but 20-30 psi will make me a little hesitant. I'm not to fond of having to chose between no power and destroying everything on my car and making old ladys mad.

I believe more around 2-3 years.
The block is cast iron, so is is definately more capable of higher boost opposed to the SR's aluminum block.
I had another buddy with a CA powered S13, and his motor spiked to 25lbs of boost on a completely stock motor, with the stock t25, and never blew it.
The only downfall to that motor, is that parts aren't readily available like the SR.

Wow 25lbs on stock T25 he must be crazy. He's just really asking to blow his turbo lol which i've seen happen a few times on dyno on sr20det's boosting to high on just basic fuel reg & boost controller.

ok so let me get this straight....you bought an E30 with and SR20DET swap to remove the engine and put an S50 in its place?:confused
wouldn't it have been cheaper to buy a stock E30 and do an S50 swap???.........let me guess, you're only trying to right the wrong that others performed in the past, right?
240sxplan 02-20-2007, 12:31 AM Heck..
Here are some pointers.. and what you need to do ..
Engine, tranny, ECU..
Custom stuff.. Drive shaft. mounts. brackets.. wiresharness..
Go with the SR20DET..
and be happy..

CarrottopM3 02-21-2007, 12:36 AM So is there anymore info besides " I heard billy bob did one and there were a few people in the malaysia that did it." i'd like to get some info on this also.

I got a link to a forum where a few people in New Zeland did this. Is New Zeland closer than Malaysia? I keep running into that road block. All I ever hear is, "someone somewhere..." or "with enough money..." I'm losing hope and I'm considering dropping the project. >_<

matt415 02-21-2007, 05:12 PM Any info on this swap in a E36? A top mount turbo manifold should solve the steering shaft problem, but what about it hitting the brake mc? It would be nice if we can retrofit an adapter so we can use BMW's parts from the guibo back (ie no custom driveshaft).

Or you could use a "remote" turbo like the squires setup. www.ststurbo.com
You'd have to custom fabricate it, but it solves the steering/mc problem with minimal performance tradeoffs overall.

Matt bought the shell without the engine/drivetrain. He's focusing on reliability over power and uniqueness, which makes sense to me.

miruku 02-27-2007, 05:18 AM this should be ok...I've seen a F20C ( S2K AP1 ) in a E36...just search google video...from Japan...9K red line...I was...speachless
CarrottopM3 02-27-2007, 09:19 AM i think I saw that video... seemed like it was pretty fast.

scabzzzz 03-02-2007, 11:03 AM wow i didnt realize how easy the sr20 fit into the e30 chassis. one of my best friends has a datsun 510 with a fully built sr20. it almost looks the same engine bay wise, hell even the car looks similiar. haha

bmwleethaxor777 03-03-2007, 01:38 AM so how much would an sr20 cost to put in a 318is and how much power does that engine usually make ?

ugh....that right there is pure sex. ENGINE SWAPS ARE NOT BLASHEMY!!! They are fun, original, and highly skilled if done correctly...
TeckniX 03-08-2007, 08:07 PM Bimmubishi your car is a true inspiration and to be honest, I just want to replicate it :P
Any tips on what the 'key' components are, past the obvious sr20 dropout, harness and ecu.
From your pictures, I could see downpipe needs fabrication, rear tranny mount needs to be custom made... and hmm yea that's it
Can the stock turbo setup be kept for a while? How hard was the blend of wiring between car/ecu to get it all working correctly?
Custom driveshaft - do you have the dimensions and different yoke needed?
Thanks.
That is a great looking conversion :)
Vdbcrlp001 03-13-2007, 10:46 AM That is one sexy kiwi E30. We've got 4 swaps nearing completion... pics and vids of all of them to come.
