First time forum user. I just picked up a 98 328i with 67K miles. The first time I opened the sun roof, no problem. Then I made the mistake of trying to close it. The roof closed all the way, but did not return to the level of the roof. Tried to open it again, wth no success. Tried to close it and only got an ugly grinding sound. Then tried to give it a little push to move it up, but didn't want to force it. Saw this earlier post on the forum:
You need a large flat head screwdriver, and the hex tool out of your car's trunk toolbox. Take the screwdriver and stick it so it begins to pop out the map lights console (the thing with the three lights and switches). This will pop off, allowing you to access the piece of the headliner that the sunroof switch is in. Take that off, and you will see the sunroof motor.
Insert hex key into slot on motor, manually turn which ever way you need to get the sunroof to close (I can't remember if it's left or right). After I did this I started up the car and the sunroof worked fine. It's a known problem with the E36.
Is this what I need to do, or is this for a different sunroof problem.
Also, the OBC gave me a left brake light fail message. I replaced the bulb, but the next day I got the message again. Any ideas?
