I've had one of those in my past cars.. although in the form of a nitro button button heh. Seriously though I stil lthink thats the coolest thing.. 100hp available at the press of a button
jezzabel 01-28-2007, 08:54 PM stick shift nice. I was afraid that BMW would do something stupid and not offer a manual transmission at first like they ddi with the M5
Mitch 01-28-2007, 10:05 PM Nice. I think it's hilarious how many idiots think those are the real mirrors the car will have. Jesus, did they forget the car is still in camo? Idiots.

SpunkyE30nOk 01-31-2007, 07:46 PM more buttons = more headaches in a bmw everyone knows that...I wish Bmw would build a car that was simple, light, and powerful...just to show the world they can build the ultimate driving machine without a ton of electronics clogging up the car and adding pointless LBS to it.

like the Z4m?
Mtrack 02-01-2007, 11:46 AM A power button...please. Yes, let me have less horsepower all the time, till I press a button. Start up routine: 1) press button and hold down to disable traction control 2) press button to stop restricting the engine. Oh wait, since it's a stick instead of SMG, I can't turn the traction control all the way off, even though I just spent $70,000 on my new M3. If you doubt this last little annoying item, know that that's what they did with the M5.:mad
Mtrack 02-01-2007, 12:22 PM P.S. Forgot to the start button!!!:rolleyes

ummm im pretty sure you can turn traction control all the way off.. why would you think you can't?
ummm im pretty sure you can turn traction control all the way off.. why would you think you can't?
In the new 6 speed M5. You can't. Thats right. You Cant. :( There is ALWAYS a level still on.
Oh and that back end still looks like utter shit. The e46 M3 has an ass on it that 'erryone wanted to tap. It was one of the sexiest back ends out there. That CSL or trunk lid spoiler, the wide wheel base, it was so sexy. Now it looks like a fucking sedan crammed into 3 series jeans.
SomeBMWGuy 02-02-2007, 10:29 AM ummm im pretty sure you can turn traction control all the way off.. why would you think you can't?
Because I've driven one and you can't.
Because I've driven one and you can't.
Do tell.
SomeBMWGuy 02-02-2007, 03:12 PM What do you mean? In the 6spd M5 you can't shut it off. You can only put it in M dynamic mode. It still allows for slip but not that much wheelspinning. Honestly having driven the SMG M5 and M6 as well, I honestly prefer the SMG.
Oh my bad I thought you had driven a new M3. :)
robisconfusedd 02-03-2007, 02:01 PM Because I've driven one and you can't.
well thats just gay then!!!!!!! there are no tricks to like hold down the button or something? cuz i remember people complaining the e46 traction control never fully turned off, but then they realized you have to hold down the button for a couple seconds...
maybe someone will make an ecu reflash to bypass that or something??

The car wasnt designed for a 6MT it starts snapping parts of the drivetrain under heavy load.

something tells me this information is incorrect...
especially if the ZF 5speed trans. from a 328 can handle 600+hp (via turbo setup like cardcounter), i would think the m5/m6's transmission could at least handle its own power, bmw wouldn't make a car with a transmission that could not.

Sorry my friend, the above stated information is correct. You can't turn off all the electronic nannies in the E60 6MT. Car and Driver explains it very well:
http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/12145/bmw-m5.html
"So BMW responded with a six-speed manual-gearbox option, which we’ve been anticipating for a year. Yes! This’ll push the bad-boy Bimmer a big step closer to perfection. We thought.
Uh-oh, not so fast. This M5’s shift-for-yourself six-speed is consistent with others we’ve experienced from BMW. In fact, it’s the same six-speed employed in the previous-generation M5. And therein lies the rub. The new M5’s V-10 was designed to be allied with the seven-speed SMG. Bolting the same engine to the six-speed entailed a proviso. With the SMG, the driver had the option of disabling the dynamic stability-control (DSC) system. When you opt for the manual, you don’t get that option. A little dashboard button labeled MDM — for “M Dynamic Mode” — raises the DSC intervention threshold, but unlike the SMG version, it can’t be completely shut down and is always on guard. When wheelspin is detected, DSC goes to work, damping the throttle, sometimes squeezing the big cross-drilled brake rotors.
http://www.caranddriver.com/assets/image/2007/Q1/010420071953210757.jpgWould you be surprised to hear that this doesn’t have a positive effect on acceleration? Or lap times on the Streets of Willow? Or making a hot exit from a slow corner? Of course you wouldn’t. Because that’s precisely what happens. This M5 was a half-second slower to 60 mph than the SMG version we tested in January 2006 — 4.7 versus 4.2 — and a half-second slower through the quarter-mile: 13.0 seconds at 114 mph versus 12.5 at 118. DSC also inhibited lane-change performance (60.8 mph versus 65.6) and skidpad results (0.83 lateral g versus 0.89).
All of this is attributable to product-liability issues, specifically, concerns about axle tramp, a.k.a. wheel hop, during full-throttle launches, which could break expensive drivetrain bits and irritate the well-heeled owners BMW would prefer to keep happy."
Julian 02-12-2007, 03:39 PM If the new M3 doesn't have a defeatable traction control I'm buying an Audi, hear that BMW?!
