This is my first BMW. The car runs great, but when i get the car up to 50mph or more it sounds like i have large offroad tires and it makes the car shake some. Any help with this would be great.

Are your tires feathered or cupped?

The dreaded 50 MPH shimmy?

Some tires make more noise than others. I run Michelin Pilots on my e38 and I feel that they are noisy, but I normally drive with the windows up and the stereo on so it doesn't offend me. Make sure your tire pressures are up to the pressure suggested for you particular car and it's passenger load. Better a firm ride than a soft one, especially for gas savings. Have the tires balanced by a shop which has the 'right' equipment. Do a search on this forum and you will find several discussions on the necessary tire balance machine (most reputable shops have them). If it's a balance problem, this should cure it. If you still have the problem, you are more than likely looking at suspension parts, and with the age of your car, it's probably a safe bet.

Let us know what you find out. Start with the least expensive and work your way up.

Thanks Jake. They are Michelins. But when i first dought the car in June it did not do this. This is new, manly after it started to get cold.

I don't know if they are steel belted or nylon belted tires. In the old days, steel belted always made noise, but nylons made noise only when cold and when warmed up were less noisy. Check your tire pressures, cold weather will lower your pressure buy a pound or more. Check cold and adjust to desired pressure before driving if possible....if not...over pressure slightly so that they stay hard when cold. The resultant ride is not uncomfortable, but firmer.
