View Full Version : Shop who wont rip me off to perform the 5th gear sticky fix?
Hey all-
My 98 M3's shifter sticks in the 5th gear gate (as outlined in http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48002&page=31&highlight=rests posts 75-762), and it's quite annoying.
Has anyone been able to do the fix? And if so, where?
Thanks!
SKooT1027 01-26-2007, 04:26 PM I would be interested in this too.. its not awful, but its such a PIA, it would be nice to have it fixed
Hawkster 01-28-2007, 01:16 AM Damn... if only I had a place to do side jobs, I'd help you guys in a heart beat!
SKooT1027 01-28-2007, 11:56 PM whats the bill supposed to run for this one though? wouldnt it be cheaper to get a diff tranny?

Wow, no. The part itself is like $12 or something. It's the labor you're paying for. That labor is going to be pretty much the same whether you're having this performed, or swapping a tranny. So it's gonna come down to price of parts. $600 for a used trans... or $12 for a detent... hmmm :)
GatorM 01-29-2007, 04:55 PM How many labor hours is it?

Don't you wish there was a bridge from LI to Fairfield or Westchester?
MSR? Every 2 out of 5 posts mention MSR. Sorry for being a noob on these forums, but I thought that they were a dismantler/salvage yard.
Lately I've been seeing things about MSR Performance and the like. Does this mean that they do mechanical work too? If so, then perhaps I'll schedule a SSK + DSSR + tranny mounts + guibo at the same time.
I have very little confidence with quick shifts when the car is cold, and I dont like the fact that I need to wait 15-20 minutes until the tranny is nice and warm for the shifter to sit between 3 and 4th gear.
The worst part of this is that this all began happening after my clutch/flywheel swap earlier this year.
Wiseguy ON 01-30-2007, 05:49 AM Yep,
We do mechanical work. We've actually slowed down on dismantling until we move to a larger location as space is an issue and the City is not thrilled with us parting out cars. Oh well.
In fact, 95% of our business now is mechanical work!
The shift detent repair is not difficult, like Hawkster said, it's about $12 in parts. The problem is that to access it you need to pull the transmission. So since you're yanking the transmission, you might as well either..
1) Wait to do it until you need to do a clutch.
or..
2) Do a clutch, rear main seal, shifter and/or new shifter bushings, etc while you're at it as the transmission is out of the car anyways.
Actually installing the kit with the trans out of the car takes an hour or less, it's getting the trans out of the car that costs.
Replacing the trans isn't a good idea at all, fix the trans you have, it's FAR less expensive.

O well.. I hope to not have to do the clutch for a while .. id like to let my funds actually grow for once since ive gotten the car instead of deplete more and more .. so i guess ill live with it for now
Wiseguy ON 02-08-2007, 02:59 AM This is something that you can live with, just shift carefully.
It's one of them parts $14 Labor $$$$$$$$$$$ jobs.
DJ OutOfSight 02-09-2007, 06:47 PM so i am in NYC and i would love to have this done also. Yet i just did a clutch a few months ago. so all i would need is to change the $14 thing.
What am i lookin at in total? ballpark it?
Black96m3 02-10-2007, 01:27 AM Dejavu... I would assume the cost is around as much as a clutch job since the bulk of the work is taking the transmission off and on. PM me.
Wiseguy ON 02-10-2007, 01:44 AM Yep. Transmission has to come out. Actually installing the kit takes absolutely no more than an hour, it's the rest of the job that's time consuming.
You have to remove the transmission, which also means exhaust, driveshaft, etc... Lots of labor, little $ in parts.
And then, since the trans is out anyway, might as well do shifter bushings, rear main seal, clutch unless it's new, etc.
BMW rates the job at 45FRUs, or 7.5 hours of labor to remove and reinstall the transmission.
The shift detent kit calls for 4FRUs of labor with the transmission removed, or 2/3 of an hour to install, which is about right.
