Here is a chart of supposed power gains for the E46 M3 we upgraded with the BAS Chip...

<img src="http://www.bavarianautosport.com/assets/imglib500/bave46500r-e46m3.jpg">

These gains have not been verified and at the cost of $2500 per installation... I don't think they will be verified anytime soon.

$2500 just for a chip (even if it's custom) upgrade?! that's a bit tooooooo much! plus i doubt there's any noticable gain by just a chip upgrade on S54.......

This is abit off topic:

It seems that the max HP is alittle less than 8000rpm...
Would it be better to shift at 7600rpm rather than 8000rpm during racing conditions??

Whatever small gain you get by shortshifting, will be offset by loosing the torque by being in the higher gear longer? :dunno

But the toque really drops after 5000 rpm ???

Ideally, it would be best to shift right after passing the Max HP region and then being thrown into the max Torque region...

I need to play around with my car and record what rpm i am thrown into after redline and compare it when i shortshft it......

I did the gear charting with the stock engine and found that the gearing spacing is rather large and the best shift point for all gears is redline.

The torque seems to drop off due to the graph scale. The stock engine (at the crank) puts out 244 at 2000 RPM< 270 at 4,500, and 240 at 7,500. Still makes 221 at 8,000.

It seems that that software wouldnt be worth it when you compare it to the dinan stuff

I have noticed this when driving the car. When I shift from 1st into second at 7600 rpm I get huge chirp. When I shift at redline it is a small chirp. In third gear if I shift at redline the chirp can barely be heard, but if it is right before redline it is quite audible.

$2500 is entirely too steep.

In terms of when to shift... you guys are forgetting torque multiplication by the transmission ratios. I've noticed that most cars require a shift very close to or at redline to maximize torque delivered to the pavement.

For those of you that still have doubts about optimum shift point being at redline, go to this site.
It'll explain HP, Torque and gearing.

Once you understand these three functions and how they work together, there won't be any question.

If you shift properly, you should hear NO CHIRP at all.

I agree that's WAY too much money. But Dinan stuff??? Like the way $40,000 in upgrades on the M5 results in NO GAINS??? People say it feels faster, well yeah, there's a lightweight fly and a diff change.

It feels faster because they aren't carrying around $40,000 dollars anymore. $40,000 is extra weight that DINAN liberated from them ;)
