Most people who do the engine swaps do it with another model's BMW engine. :wave I was thinking the same thing. Kevlar 01-24-2007, 10:24 AM Non-BMW engine swaps? I don't think that we have a lot of those. Most people who do the engine swaps do it with another model's BMW engine. Those should probably go into the chassis forum where the engine is being swapped into. There will probably be more relavent information in there anyway. GMM 01-24-2007, 01:24 PM Nice, Ive been discussing this with my father for a while. Hopefully ill get some advice out of here. 740iMC 01-24-2007, 01:56 PM Personally, I would like to see a LS7 engine swap into an e46 M3. :D Fair 01-24-2007, 04:02 PM SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!! :redspot bmw3er 01-24-2007, 05:41 PM Thanks to the mods for this section. I'm working to document an e39 LS1 twin turbo swap. I'll repost what I have here. Yeee HAAAW! DaveAZ 01-25-2007, 04:19 PM Non-BMW engine swaps? I don't think that we have a lot of those. Fair 01-25-2007, 07:38 PM Thank you to Kevlar and Fair for finally getting this forum on here! Oh, don;t thank me... we asked but the $$ involved to sponsor a particular sub-forum was more than our marketing budget allowed (above what we already sponsor). You can thank your moderators and the site owner(s) for this sub-forum. Thanks also to everyone who voted. Whenever you see a forum sponsored by a company, thank them. Now we just need to put it to good use. excellent carbon monoxide 01-31-2007, 01:43 AM so what about some parts list and some information already. erikerikerik 01-31-2007, 02:42 AM Non-BMW engine swaps? I don't think that we have a lot of those. Most people who do the engine swaps do it with another model's BMW engine. yeah, I think a slight modification of the title maybe be needed to just "engine change." because to swap is the replace with the same make and model. engine change is to replace with a different engine. stupid terminology. SQ Bimmer 01-31-2007, 02:43 AM Oh crap, never noticed this. Guess I'll be posting in here a lot! stan man 01-31-2007, 07:01 PM So LS1 is great, but what about 4.6L mustang engine? It's way cheaper and still gonna be lots of fun, no? rao 01-31-2007, 08:06 PM The 4.6 Ford motor is a lot wider then the LS1 (those darn overhead cams :laugh ) so it won't fit as easily, or at all, in a lot of applications. OilStain 01-31-2007, 09:31 PM Rao, are you Rob from the Rx7 place? Just curious, as I think (uh) I remember the moniker Rao. Cheers, either way! rao 01-31-2007, 09:59 PM ^^^^ yep, that's me. I did 2 RX-7 engine swaps :) JoeZ 01-31-2007, 10:38 PM ^^^^ yep, that's me. I did 2 RX-7 engine swaps :) Pics or ban;) Fair 01-31-2007, 10:50 PM So LS1 is great, but what about 4.6L mustang engine? It's way cheaper and still gonna be lots of fun, no? DOHC engines are externally huge, very heavy, and have many more parts (4 cams vs 1) for their displacement and power. As "dinosaur" as they may seem to some, an OHV V8 can be very compact, robust, low cost, lightweight and pack in a lot of liters. The new GM LSX is capable of 8.2L in an externally LS1 looking shell. MMM... :evil2 One of my oldest, and most self explanatory pictures about DOHC V8s... http://www.vorshlag.com/pictures/motor-4.6-4V-004.jpg No trickery, no foolin. 4.6L on left, 5.0L on right. The DOHC Ford 4.6L is similar in size and weight to the BMW M62. The 4.4L BMW M62 V8 is 7" wider than the 5.7-7.0L LS1/2/6/7, not to mention a lot heavier and harder to make power with... these are pictures of my former '98 540 engine and the LS1 in our first E36: http://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_01.jpghttp://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_02.jpg 1998 BME 540 M62 motor and engine cover..... being measured w/o engine cover at right http://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_03.jpghttp://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_04.jpg Note the M62 engine width of over 27"......LS1 in E36 being measured at right http://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_05.jpghttp://www.vorshlag.com/fair/M62_vs_LS1_06.jpg LS1 is 20" and change wide..... M62 intake/engine cover completely dwarfs the LS1! http://www.vorshlag.smugmug.com/photos/108926762-S.jpghttp://www.vorshlag.smugmug.com/photos/108926890-S.jpg http://www.vorshlag.smugmug.com/photos/108927047-S.jpghttp://www.vorshlag.smugmug.com/photos/108927238-S.jpg More M62 hugeness. Note more massive M5 version at bottom right. "400hp" and it can be yours for only $10-15K, used. Bring a blowtorch for the showhorn job that motor requires! :D Having worked on many Ford 4.6Ls and M62s, I can tell you first hand of the pain and frustration - but you probably already know. Just changing the fan (http://www.vorshlag.com/tech_540fan.php) is a PITA. LS1 motor work is easy in comparison... LS1 cam swaps are stupid easy, LS1 water pump change (http://www.vorshlag.com/ls1_waterpump.asp) is 60 minutes of easy, as are most other jobs. rao 01-31-2007, 11:14 PM Pics or ban;) Here are some pics of the last one. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=603638 The other one was a hardtop with a LT1, I will have to dig up some pics of that one if you really want them :) JoeZ 01-31-2007, 11:24 PM Here are some pics of the last one. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=603638 Ahhhh!
