Well My battery is about caput so I went to purchase a new one and the gentleman at autozone told me that if I do it myself I may have issues. He said that with some cars you have to have constant power going to the car because of the computer. Can I just go ahead and install this myself or do I have to have a shop do it? Thanks.

I did it myself with an Autozone battery when I got my 99 528i. It didn't hurt the electrical system.

What that guy said doesn't add up to me. If the car needed constant power to live, then you'd screw up your car every time you disconnected the battery. I'd be willing to bet that the shop manual tells you to disconnect the battery before doing many different things on the car (which by what he said, would hurt your car). It would also mean that if you ever left your lights on and completely drained your battery that you'd have to have your car towed in, which seems unlikely.

B.S. Of course our cars can survive without the battery connected. You will lose some of the volitile information such as time, average MPG, trip odo, etc. I've changed several batteries in BMW's and that's all that happened. Never even lost radio station settings!

Don't pay attention to the $7/hr weenie behind the parts counter of a chain store.

+1 on B.S.
you'd be amazed at how many parts guys and certified mechanics have misinformations
on cars such as BMW, Mercedes, and so on. That's why you must be armed with knowledge before you bring your car to them. Either that or bring your car only to a seasoned and reputable German autos. Trust me, I've talked to
hundreds.

If the case above is true...then BMW screwed up royally...since they say nothing of the sort in the owners manual where it describes how to install a battery! But who reads that stupid owners manual anyways!! :eyecrazy  :eyecrazy

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
