any ideas? is this a common hassle?

Mine does that once and a while, I just smack the dash right above the speedo a few times and it pops into place again and works.

I would think that it would be related to the speedo cable. Either it's snapped, or it's come loose at the gearbox or the back of the speedo. It's pretty rare, I think, for the actual speedo to break. The odometer, on the other hand, seems to stop working in almost every e21 I've seen at the wreckers.

Check the speedo line conections at the tranny, the counterbox just below the fire wall, and behind the cluster. Its not that uncommon for it to break, afterall its 25+ year old plastic gears in there. Did you go light speed perhaps melting the gears?

Yeah every so often my cable comes undone too, I'd unscrew it from the back of the speedo and see if it the cable spins while the car is in motion...then you know its either the trans interface or a broken cable.

Proof positve that smacking it doesnt fix everything and that also some things NEVER change!!!

seriously, the 2 times it happened in my car, I turned it on and the speedo suddenly stopped, I wacked the top of the dash once or twice, and bam speedo works. Its worth a shot, can't hurt these cars to smack em.
