View Full Version : Technical question about the SMG transmission...
Jet Jockey 01-17-2007, 11:45 PM Hello folks,
I just need a simple answer to these SMG related questions.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the SMG and SMG II because I don't know how many modes of operation are possible with it.
1- In any case if you select the most manual/sport mode, does the SMG offer a launch control of some sort?
2- Again assuming the most manual/sport mode, will the SMG allow you to keep it in the selected gear if you bounce it off the red line/rev limiter? In other words does the SMG up shift to the next gear if you approach the rev limiter?
TIA
I don't think the US model has a launch mode. I know the Euro does. And I don't know for sure if it won't up shift for you before the engine hits the limiter but I think it might.
egyptntree 01-18-2007, 12:16 AM If I am correct there is a way to put it into launch control but I think it burns out the clutch insanely fast. Also it wont shift for you unless it is in auto mode.
BMW sob 01-18-2007, 12:18 AM I've used the launch mode on the US models. It is fun...
I'm not sure about the auto shift up. I think it does not shift up in manual mode unless you shift it and it doesn't alow you to shift into to low of a gear too.

1 - Yes, there is a launch mode. Switch off the DSC and set the SMG to mode S6. Then hold the shift lever forward and stomp on the gas. The car revs to 1800 RPM (for the US model. The Euro model revs to 3500 or 4000 RPM). Release the shift lever and the car jets off.
2 - SMG will not automatically upshift. It will let you bounce off the redline till you break the engine. However, it will automatically downshift if the revs drop too low in the selected gear.

Thank you, that sounds great! Too bad you don't get the full launch/high RPMs like in Europe.

Jet, just shot me a PM I'd give you the info!! Are you thinking of switching to this side of the pond? hehe.
US cars do have the ability to launch at 3500RPM. The way you do it is the difference. "Launch mode" is holding the shifter forward and holding the throttle down all the way, then releasing the shifter to move forward. In the US the RPM is set too 1800RPM in Europe it is 3500RPM.
Now the way to get the 3500 launch in the US is that you adjust SMG to level 5 or 6, traction control off of course, you then simply mash the throttle to the floor, the car will rev to 3500RPM and drop the clutch, it is also known as "burnout" mode. But it works well when launching with DR's at the track.
I did get a 1.78 60' with my SMG so you def have the ability to get a great launch, however there is a slight delay unlike launch mode so you'd have to time it just right if you were street racing, :nono or bracket racing.
In "Auto" Mode "S6" setting, SMG will down shift for you aggressivly, in the appropriate gear and upshift at 7900RPM to the next gear as well, and of course it has rev matching when you down shift while in "sport" mode. I can't tell you how much I love the tranny and it's great here in socal traffic. :redspot

DLSJ5, how, specifically, and on what track, did you get the 1.78 60' time?

It was at Sacramento raceway, which is just about at sea level. Most likely the best track in California, somewhat comprable to Atco or E-town on the east coast, although many track guru's here in California will argue that our tracks are slower than the east coast tracks. ;)
Much of it depends on the outside conditions and alot of it depends on how well the track is prepped. I warmed the Drag Radials (265/40/18 BF Goodrich) up real good in burnout mode, applying the brakes to hold the car there.
S6 mode, TC off, then "Mash the throttle" 3500K type launch. It was a great launch and I thought I was going to break my 12.89 I did previously that day, but I hit the rev limiter from 1st to 2nd, and hit a 12.9. :(
