Yes your car is OBDII. If you have the 2.5L, your car should start to die around 5k rpm, while the OBDI 2.5L will keep pulling. The differences involve performance and ease in tuning/obtaining horsepower. People often do OBDI conversions on 328s and M3s for tuning purposes. The older M50 OBDI intake manifold breathes much better.

if any car post 96 that means all e39s are OBDII then?

i always thought that early 528s and 523s (uk markets and others) are OBDI

anyway to tell from the computer itself when its plugged in to the diagnose machine such as GT1?

Well...in the USA 1996+ (mfg date) cars are OBD II....if you choose not to leave your country of origin as a point of reference...you may get incorrect information because most people will respond from their point of view...which for many in this forum is the USA.

If you car is OBD II compliant...you will have a port located in the left footwell...see the diagram below:

OBD II was not required in europe untill 2000
