View Full Version : Vanos failure, will this effect engine internals?

I have had my 2003 M3 (SMG, 36k miles) vert for a month and it has developed a rough engine noise, although there are no warning lights on the dash. It sounds like a "thump, thump, thump" on tickover, that speeds up with the revs.

Took it back to the BMW dealer, and they say the Vanos has failed. They will look at it in a weeks time, strip the engine and replace any failed parts at that time.

My only query is that they have told me to use the car as normal for a week. I will need to do 300-400 miles and I am concerned further damage could result. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Finally, could this affect longterm reliability as I intend to keep the car for several years. Thanks

we sound like were having the same problem except for they said mine was the vanos but it wasn't now they are taking out the cams. I think the car will be fine for 3-400 miles just take it easy while driving.
