I read in another topic that this needs to be done "Every inspection 1 and 2, so that is about every 20 to 25k miles."
is this true and if so why and about how much is this ?:help

Definitely true as the M3 S54 has a mechanical (solid) valve train as opposed to hydraulic (no adjustment usually required). Due to wear, the valve lash can/will become out of spec and potentially cause damage to the valve train.
My car hasn't needed it yet, but I hear it's $600 - $1200 depending on who does it.
Search on the forum -- it's been discussed a lot.

Just had my second inspection (21K) and they had to keep it over night for the valve adjustment. How much did it cost? Nothing. It's covered under the maintenance plan. I 'spose you could have an extremely low mileage M3 that is over 4 years old and out of warranty, but how often does that happen?

FYI, you are going to need the valve adjustment every 25k or so.

Hey guys.. we've done about 3-4 inspections with valve adjustments on the S54 engines and what we found was that 1 of them didn't need an adjustment.. all were within spec. The other engines only needed an average of 4-6 valves adjusted out of 24, and these were S54s with over 50,000 miles on them.
We recommend to do the inspection II service every 30,000 miles but we tell the customer that the valve adjustment is optional.
Seems like the wear on the shim or valvetrain parts are very strong and last longer than factory recommendations. Of course other factors can contribute in how fast it can wear out.

factory warranty covers it every 30k, as that is the factory reccommendation for adjustment intervals

Factory maintenance covers it for 4yrs/50k miles. After that you are on your own.

Would an extended warranty cover Inspection II @ 60k miles?

Extended warranty no. Extended maintenance yes.
