I got my idling problem fixed by a simple reattatchment of a hose to a free nozzle, and that's great cos I can drive my car around and stuff. :D
But now that it's running I've gone through half a tank since yesterday afternoon! I did take it on a pretty long drive, but I filled up half way and I would have only done about 100 Km since then. >8o
I've looked at some specs on Wikipedia and they say that the 323i did about 10 liters every 100 K's!
I've checked for fuel leaks; no smells there, and it only idles at just over 1000.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

poor tuning, more vacume leaks, bad timing, crap plug/leads...thats all i can think of thats simple

Yep there is still a vacuum hosse that is stopped with a screw :(
But what do you mean by the plugs and leads? Are they spark plugs? Am I being stupid?

Take spark plugs out and see if they are good.

Fuel injectors and/or fuel distributor could be clogged, the advance weights in the ignition distributor could be sticking. I used to get only 100km to half a tank but now I'm getting 150-175km per half tank after cleaning the injectors and dizzy. I'm still trying to track it down. I used to think it was because of my lead foot (nothing like the sound of the M20 revving! :D ) I still think I'm having a fuel dizzy issue, waiting to get a fuel pressure test kit so I can go through it properly.
Good luck, and let me know what you find out.

That's where I like the 320i with a near stock configuration. My 83 does about 260km for a half tank. That worked out to be like about 20 liters back when I did the trips in the summer. That's about 30 mpg, which is pretty good for the ol e21.

Thanks guys, I wouldn't know where to start but I'll pass the advice onto a guy I know who has a bimmer workshop. Hopefully he can help sort it out.
Cheers.

Hey just had an after-thought... When I take off at a stop light or something (whenever I'm starting off in 1st) I just feather the accellerator and the revs actually drop to the point of stalling!! So I have to take off at about 3000. Sounds fantastic though :) Does heaps for my self esteem.. he he

I have pondered on this for some time now, and until my father pointed out the problem of idle and fuel consumption to one of our friends who also owns a 323i, i never really thought about it, but just take this in(maybe im wrong whatever but think about it huh?) our cars are getting a bit old, and with wear and tear comes the injection system, however old they may be, there may be another issue, especially with your almost stalling problem, what if the cold start enrichment system doesnt turn off properly, and runs rich for a long time, whilst the rest of the engine is trying to deal with a rich fuel mixture. Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt a choke do that to a car if its trying to run at normal temperatures?
Hope i could help

If you got a bit of moneeyyy to throw around and some above average mechanical skills, you may want to get a triple weber setup. Its a common falacy that webers give worse fuel mileage, if tuned correctly they will give just as good, if not better, with a boost in performance and super duper awsome engine induction noise(orgasmic) PM me, as i have a little secret to tuning the webers easily (try an hour for all 3).
