If his RX7 is stock, it's prob not a 3rd gen. There are practically no stock third gens (if your friend is an enthusiast who knows the first things about 3rd gen rx7s) So for reliability it'll at least have a downpipe. With a strong engine that's a match for an LS1 on the freeway. You would still beat him from a stop.
If his car is a 2nd generation, (pre '91), well 91 and below, then you'd smoke him unless he was medium modified. In terms of performance.....
a decked out E36 M3 matches the performance of a stock 3rd gen rx7. The E46 would match the performance of a mildly modified one. OK maybe that was more than you wanted to hear.
