Hi everybody:
I've been a VW person all my life and loved all the cars I owned. However I've reached the point in my life that I want to upgrade to something more prestigious. I have spend a lot of time researching various type of cars and I pretty much pinpointed it down to one company: BMW.

However due to what I've been reading(consumer reports, customer comments and so on...), I have some concerns and I hope you guys can put my mind at ease:

1. People are complaining about having to replace their brakes every two years for a cost of roughly $1000. Is that myth or the truth?

2. Reliability: People keep whining about constant electrical problems they are having with their BMWs. Is that still the case with the new models or is it a thing of the past?

3. I testdrove a 328i and 335i. I loved everything about either car, especially the extra kick of the 335i. (even though my wallet will most likely not allow me to pay for it). However I read a lot about the G35 and how it is supposed to be en par with the BMW. Does anybody have any comments on that since I did not actually drive the Infinti yet.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Zwanzigoetzel

I looked at the G35 and was not impressed. It did have a lot of power, but fuel economy was worse than a 328i. Plus it wasn't a BMW. In the end I decided on going with a 328i and I liked the 335 better, but my wallet liked the 328,

The only other thing I can comment on is that with a new BMW brakes are covered under the maintenance plan for 4yrs\40,000 miles so it will be a while before you have to worry about it.

Actually it's 50,000 miles.

I've also been try to decide between the 2
with G35 I would end up buying it, but with 335 I'm going with a lease
I'm still leaning towards the 335 because the '07 G35 coupe hasn't really bene updated like the sendan, plus it's got less HP than the sedan(300HP) now if we're talking about the '08 G35 coupe....

I have both vehicles. I really like the G35 6MT, but I like the 335i Coupe 6MT better. The G35 stickered out about 8k less than the Bimmer and no question is a great car to drive. While the two allegedly have similar hp numbers (I seriously doubt the 335 is only 300), there's no question that the 335i is faster. The torque says it all. Ironically, the Bimmer gets better mileage.

I also have both vehicles ('06 G35 6MT and '07 335i sedan 6MT) and agree with this analysis. They are both tremendous cars but the 335i is well worth the difference in $$$ if you can get there.

Nissan? Honestly I'd never buy a Nissan. Excuse me, "Infiniti," Nissan's electrical gremlins are second to none and I've never known anyone who loved any Nissan product they've bought aside from a few Titan owners.

In this situation I considered the Lexus IS350. Actually, I considered just about anything with four doors and a pulse.

The Lexus was the CLOSEST in power, options, and driver enjoyment to the 335i I ended up with. in the end, I've owned a Toyota and I loved it so I opted to broaden my horizons. Plus reliability is moot when you have a 4 year 50k mile all parts and services warranty. :D

And emberass my brother in law in his E46 M3 who can't drive and is now scared of getting whooped by a sedan. :P

1. Every two years could be correct...if you put about 22,000 miles per year on your car.

2. None so far...what kind of electrical problems?

3. My personal preference is the BMW, but the G35 has its appeal. Personally I don't think the seating position, drive feel is as good in the G35. It has good power though, but the driving exprience of the BMW is superior in my view.

Compared both, went with the 328i. Found he G35 sloping roof very confining and in general the seating position of the 328i much better. G35 more powerful, but ride not as smooth as the BMW. Finally, G35 interior and exterior just did not have the appeal of the BMW- just not as nice a design.

If you are saying you want to elevate your prestige level I would say Japanese isn't the way to go. You may impress the Japanese crowd ( fart can exhaust , reverse ballcap wearing folk ) but the Euro crowd will pay little notice. My 2 cents......... BMW, there is no equal in it's class, period.

Big nasty dirty BMW brakes, make your wheels look like crap 5 minutes after washing the car, expensive to replace but you have to adore the grip. That is the price you pay for a car that stops like nothing out there, you can get pdiffrent pads aftermarket that reduce dust and last longer, but you will lose performance. If you like working on your car, you can get OEM Rotors and brakes for a few hundred bucks on eBay, but your buying a new car so that stuff will be free. Plus you can get an extended maintance contract for 2500, well worth the price for 2 more years or 100K miles. I bought it for my 03 525 and it has paid for itself already, And I will use it for the 100K service.

i too compared the is350 to the 335i but from infiniti i was thinking about the M45. coming from a thrill seaking, sports enthusiast point of veiw the 335i has a lot more to offer. G25 IMO are way overpriced and no matter what anyone says theyre a pale copy of the original (350z). unless optioned to the max the sedans are hidious and that stupid ass clock takes up too much room on the inside. in general the sedan seems like exactly what it is, on over-glorified nissan car. i was very very dissapointed when i drove it. i would take a nissan maxima over it any day. The m45 however is freakin sweet. If they had a manual transmission id be more opt to buy one but the m45 also is kind of past the sport luxury line and more on the just luxury line. Its why i chose a 335i over both the infiniti, as well as the bmw 7 series. i also looked at the is350 but no manual transmission and it pissed me off that you can get the is250 in manual or all wheeld drive. i ranted about this in my 335i awd thread if you care to read more. IMO buy the 335i to be happy

Hahaha.....as expected you guys indeed put my mind at ease. And somebody here put it well:
"If you are saying you want to elevate your prestige level I would say Japanese isn't the way to go." VERY good point !!!
And as a German I should be ashamed of even thinking about a Japanese car....WATT WAS I SINKING????
Well, thanks everybody for your input. Now I just have to decide between the 328i and 335i and whether I should do the European Delivery, since I plan to go back to visit the home country next year anyway.

later,
