View Full Version : Driving lights (light rings on coupes) on or off? JNMACE 01-11-2007, 06:33 PM I am going to turn mine off. It just seems like a bit much...what do you guys think? If BMW finds out that youve turned them off, watch out. They send a special "envoy" to your house in the middle of the night and he turns them back on! steve99m3 01-11-2007, 07:30 PM A bit much? What do you mean? Too flashy or gaudy? aftp302 01-11-2007, 07:43 PM If BMW finds out that youve turned them off, watch out. Thanks for brightening my day! :D greenie99 01-11-2007, 08:59 PM Dude, you're cracking me up today! First the sunroof, now this! Thanks for brightening my day! :D Glad I could "help". No charge for Delaware residents! JNMACE 01-11-2007, 09:02 PM A bit much? What do you mean? Too flashy or gaudy? I just remember getting tired of everyone riding around in their 5-series E39's with them on...you could always tell who just got their new 5-series by whether the light rings were on! It got a little lame really quickly. However, I do realize that on the coupe they function as daytime driving lamps and are much brighter than manually turning them on as parking lights when used this way (as if they have a normal setting and a bright setting), but I am wondering if maybe it is a little gaudy... tyler9595 01-11-2007, 10:35 PM I agree with you. I turned them off. Mark335i 01-12-2007, 10:47 AM I agree with you. I turned them off. +1 on the "off". I don't like daytime running lights. :shifty 777ER 01-12-2007, 11:53 AM +1 on the "off". I don't like daytime running lights. :shifty Same thing goes for cops. They would rather pull over a car with daytime lights than one without for a random check. For some reason cops hate daytime lights. aftp302 01-12-2007, 01:02 PM Same thing goes for cops. They would rather pull over a car with daytime lights than one for a random check. Huh? MrWorf 01-12-2007, 01:07 PM Why don't you like DRL ? I might be biased, but it's easier to see (in the dusk) is a car is actually running or not with DRL, which might change the way you interact with the traffic. I almost got hit by an Audi A6 in one of the small roads where I live because the fool was driving waay to fast into a crossing (assuming that no cars would be there) and since the car was dark, DRL was off (imported german Audi, Sweden requires DRL) and it was dusk, it took me longer to detect the car (and stomp on the breaks, upon which I get some foul looks since I was at fault... clearly... ahem). And it's not like the lights wear out any quicker. I've (only) had two cars, and the last one for 5 years with xenons that are on at all time and I haven't needed to change them. IMHO DRL should be a world standard since it does alot more good than bad (can't think of a bad thing actually, but I guess you guys will tell me ;)) greenie99 01-12-2007, 01:14 PM Huh? +1 greenie99 01-12-2007, 01:15 PM Why don't you like DRL ? Sorry about that, I edited it. AZ KENNY 335I 01-12-2007, 02:23 PM +1 on the "off". I don't like daytime running lights. :shifty Its a lil different in the desert, you actually need drl's on some of our roads especially during the summer months Whispre 01-12-2007, 02:43 PM I personally believe DRL's should be mandatory. As an ex proffessional truck driver who has driven over 1.5 million miles, I keep my daytime lights on all the time. its not just dusk, they can make your car visible when heat waves would make it invisible, they help during rain and any other type of weather that cuts down visibility. I want people to see me, and I want to see them. Here in Washington, they have run several long term (10 year) tests of DRL's on highways that have had historically high collision rates. In most cases the number of collisions has been dramatically reduced after they made it a law that you had to have headlights or daytime running lights on during that stretch of highway. forget looks, be safe, and the faster you go the more important it is. Just my .02 Mark335i 01-12-2007, 03:48 PM I turn my headlights on at dusk. I turn my headlights on when it's raining (it's the law in FL). When it's a bright sunny day with no heat waves or dust storms, I leave them off (maybe it's Hertz rental car syndrome)? My preference, I'm not trying to change anybody else's practices. :confused code33 01-12-2007, 04:41 PM WHAT????? Cops hate DRL?????? Wow.....where have we gone. I'm a cop and neither color or LIGHTS (unless you don't have it on during hours of darkness) determine if we do 'random' checks or stops......No such thing as 'random checks' my friend. We all have rights and Officers have to have probable cause or reasonable suspicion to detain you. Don't believe all the myths out there. Too much TV my friend.......my 0.02 Knightsport 01-12-2007, 04:45 PM Wait, does my Sedan 335i not have them? I feel cheated, I am calling the CEO of BMW NA RIGHT NOW!!! :P 2K7328i 01-12-2007, 09:40 PM I'm going to change the bulb to an LED to make my angel's much brighter instead of having an orange tint in them. geomazu 01-12-2007, 09:48 PM too much time in your hands...too much time in my hands for reading this lovely article. SDCosmosM3 01-13-2007, 01:53 AM I'm going to change the bulb to an LED to make my angel's much brighter instead of having an orange tint in them. I noticed the orange tint too....I would really like to make the angels a brighter white. Any ideas on how to do this? 2K7328i 01-13-2007, 10:01 AM There is one bulb on either side I believe. Take them out and put an LED in each one. I'm also taking out the front corner light which is amber and swapping it out to either blue or clear. 777ER 01-13-2007, 11:05 AM WHAT????? We all have rights and Officers have to have probable cause or reasonable suspicion to detain you. Don't believe all the myths out there. Too much TV my friend.......my 0.02 I read that from 2 books written by cops... I don't know why but maybe because it makes your car stick out from the rest of the traffic? I know that about the random checks thing needing probable reason, I'm just typing in general. One time I did get pulled over, the cop asked for license/reg and I asked what's wrong...he took a glance, gave back my license/reg and said "nothing" then walked back to his car and took off...I was like "WTF was that about?!" 777ER 01-13-2007, 11:06 AM I noticed the orange tint too....I would really like to make the angels a brighter white. Any ideas on how to do this? There's a bulb that lights them up...I don't know where it is but I think it's on the bottom of the headlight assy. A BMW service manual would be something to look into. |
