View Full Version : St Louis - Friday 5/18 & Saturday 5/19 Tail of the Dragon Roadtrip
Brent_Vino 01-11-2007, 02:45 PM Col Marsh and I are planning a drive out of St Louis to run the Tail of the Dragon.. The date has been set to May 18 and May 19. We are working on a group price for hotel/lodging along the route if possible.
Tennessee into North Carolina on US 129, 11 miles and 318 turns/twisties in those 11 miles. We are going to drive up on a friday morning at first light; around 0500, drive the route a few times, sight see or whatever, get a room at a bed 'n breakfast/motel, drive it a few more times on a saturday and then come home.. this is the GENERAL idea.
This IS a generally a BMW event but is opened to other cars... We have a vette or 2 planning on joining us and a mini or 2. ANYONE can go.
we are also planning to see the Biltmore Mansion http://www.biltmore.com/ as recommended by Adrnln-ti, among a few other things like a winery or 3. :devillook
someone post this on M3forums.com midwest section (or other bmw boards that i'm not aware of...)? i've been banned for quite some time. :rolleyes
thanks!!

ss109 01-14-2007, 08:12 PM Hrmmmm, I may be interested in joining you guys. Do you know what route you are going to take from St. Louis the area? I have always wanted to drive that road and see Biltmore as well.
Brent_Vino 01-16-2007, 06:13 PM I'll put together a tentative route tonight after I leave the base. :)
Brent_Vino 01-17-2007, 12:41 AM 64 East to 57 South to 24 East to 40 East to 140 East to US 129!!! 500 miles.
can't wait.:redspot
Eric BMW 01-18-2007, 04:15 PM Are you kidding? That's the worst idea ever. let's get a bunch of inexperienced testosterone filled people to "cruise" on one of the most difficult street runs in the nation.
I've heard horror stories and worse of packs like this resulting in only 3-5 cars left by the end of the run.
I'd defitnely drive that road, but not with a large group.
eddiet 01-19-2007, 01:57 AM count me in!!!
Brent_Vino 01-19-2007, 07:01 PM we arent going to drive it like we do out hwy 94. be realistic, E-Kal.
myself or the Col. will lead the way.. this is considered the Ring of the States...(nurburgring). E-Kal, i think you are just being a girl about wanting to go ;)
i'll set up a MEETING place prior to leaving St Louis.. let me get with the Col and figure something out.
stay tuned.
STL Avus M3 01-20-2007, 05:52 PM You guys should be ok unless there are some wineries in route.
Brent_Vino 01-20-2007, 09:08 PM wineries will be on the list but it wont be involved with the run. we arent that stupid. the Col wouldnt have any of that.
addnon 01-21-2007, 07:55 PM i've always thought this is a funny pic from the dragon:

ROFL!
Brent_Vino 02-19-2007, 06:37 PM There is a Microtel in Robbinsville, NC. This appears to have modest accomodations and is less than half an hour from the Dragon. The one right on the hiway is already booked.
I booked a room for $75 which compared to the other lodges is very reasonable. As of the evening of Feb 13, there are plenty of rooms remaining. We just got one night for Friday the 18th of May.
Thanks to Col Bob for the information!
The website for this hotel is www.microtelrobbinsville.com
The phone number is 1-888-771-7171.

b13magoo 02-27-2007, 01:34 AM I drove it about 10 years ago in a modded crx. I love it. I hate the big rigs though. One almost took me out.
Brent_Vino 04-17-2007, 12:26 AM bump.
it'll be tough to get a room. it is doable though.
Ferrari is having their weekend there as well.. its going to be awesome. we have 3 bmws, 3 porsches and a mini coooper committed. cannonball run style. :)

STL Avus M3 05-21-2007, 12:50 PM Glad to hear you guys all made it back in one piece.
I definitely would have lost my mind driving 1200 miles with my squeaky steering wheel.
Brent_Vino 05-21-2007, 05:49 PM Maj Tommy and myself exiting the Dragon
Brent_Vino 05-21-2007, 09:56 PM 100 people die on the Dragon a year. We were there on friday and saturday. the very first day, 2nd time down the dragon, my brother witnessed this from his Mini Cooper.

if youve ever driven the dragon, you will understand it has to be the most dangerous road in North America.
powellsd 05-21-2007, 10:40 PM That is crazy man.
Why didnt he stop to make sure they were ok?????
Brent_Vino 05-22-2007, 08:04 PM I have no idea. i dont think there was a pull-off there and he wouldve risked getting hit from traffic behind.... i dont know.
he just kept going.:rolleyes i yelled at him, trust me.
I wouldve pulled over and notified the ppl coming in the opposite direction that there were pieces of bike everywhere. flashing high beams and waving to slow down.:help
Patrick33 05-22-2007, 08:15 PM wow, that video is insane.... when is the next winery run Brent?
