Yes I know, retarded question, but walmart's book that lists oil filter part #'s doesn't even list bmw let alone a 1980 one :rolleyes

if someone could tell me a fram / purolater / bosche / whatever common brand oil filter part # that I can cross reference, it would be appreciated.

Stay away from a Fram filter, please!? They aren't built to handle the kind of pressure that a BMW engine is capable if making, particularly on a cold morning. All you need to do is pick it up, and compare it to a German brand. Find a European specialist shop, and buy a filter from them. Should have an OC25 in stock. They fit all M10, and S14 engines.

I know CSK (Checkers, Schucks, Kragen), Autozone, & probably Napa carry Bosch products. I recall seeing Bosch oil filters @ my local Checkers & Autozone.

If you have plans to hold on to the car for a while, I'd just buy a case of 10 from an online parts store (azautohaus or bmaparts)

Agreed about the Fram...they don't have a pressure relief valve like the Bosch & Mahle filters.
Some more quick info about those filters:
Fram's have about a 189 sq-in filter element;
Mahle's have about a 200 sq-in filter element.
The Mahle's also have a significantly larger center cylinder (which should make oil flow better compared to the Fram). And I think the Bosch & Mahle filters are the same

There is a guy on eBay who sells Mahle filters in lots of 10 or 20. I have bought both from him for the E21 and E24. The lot of 10 was only $20.

A few years back there was a bad lot of Fram motorcycle filters for Honda Gold Wings on the market. The glue that they used to bond the paper element to the 'dome' end of the filter...umm...melted...when the engine got up to operating temperature. I don't think I need to explain what happened once the engine was shut off and cooled back down to ambient temparture...do I? :devillook :mad (Or, more accurately, what happened once the engine was restarted, after it had cooled off?)

Ever since then, me and Mr. Fram stay far, far away from each other.
