When you have a cabrio and you cruise in front of all the cities hotspots a little bit of us all changes!

I wouldn't go as far to say that I try to act wayyyy too cool, but I do tend to turn the tunes up a little more and sit a little lower in my seat.

Oh yea, the shades always have to be on :cool

when the top is down

music sucks, cause it just leaks out into the open and doesn't sound as good

and i try to keep low key with the top down, don't want to look like a snob who wants attention from people

however, i have been driving with my top up more than down usually, just because all of my drives haven't been much further than around the city before i have to park it and go inside somewhere for some time

You only like BMW for the vert thing? I mean, you could get a Toyota Yaris vert then.

I love BMW, they drive great, but we know that. I love the e36 shape and a vert is just the coolest thing. And also looks great with the top up.

Well I'm 6'3" so my seat is already on its lowest position.

My car came with 3 DVD screens, but I never (ok don't lie, two times) in summer, but it ws just a bit too "look at me!".

I don't do anthing special or anyting. The car alone does all the attraction. ;)

Yea I could see where you're coming from.

I'm 22, self employed and having the time of my life.

Oh and MParallel, I'm 6'0 so I actually try and sit lower to not look like I am riding in a toy car haha.

If its busy and theres allot of traffic... I keep the tinted windows up (yea i know it kills the point of having a vert), for some reason having top down and windows down is an invitation for people around here to say or yell stuff at me and i just want to be left alone.

If its the middle of the night with no one around, everything is down.

Wow I've never had anything yelled at me....mostly I guess because every other car around me in the city seems to be a ferrari, lamborghini, porsche, aston martin or something of that caliber.

Every second car you see here is 50K-60K or more expensive but yet there are very very very few TRUE enthusiasts.

Don, you're not having any fun because you live and drive in Irvine which most consider just another part of LA. Move to Leucadia, near San Diego. I keep my top down most of the time, however I do park it overnight in the garage. What's the point of having a vert if you need to put the top up every time you park it. The bad part of leaving it down is the sun eats the leather seats and plastic trim.

no i do really like my bmw. i never thought i could afford one. i was looking for a vert to take place of the old fj-40 landcruiser vert. so i was looking at mustang gts and z-28s and they were all ragged out crap. i was sitting at a light and there was one for sale i stopped and looked at it. nice car and in my price range. so i started looking. and drove a few. love it now. wouldnt trade it for two or even 3 yaris verts, haha. now i want to get my wife a 5 series or a x5.:) oh yeah im 6'2" 250#

People who drive with the top down and the windows up....usually are wearing a baseball cap so as not mess up their perfect hair, and have a cup of Starbucks double-latte with a touch of mocha in their cupholder and a Blackberry plugged into the cigarette lighter. Maybe a bluetooth in their ear also. Wearing Dockers and penny loafers.

i got the windows tinted more for security than looks. when i park the car with the top up, windscreen up, windows up, and sunshade up, you cant see ANYTHING in the car - especially the backseat, plus it makes me feel safer driving alone at night.

There is no better feeling than dropping the top on a nice warm summer day and rolling through traffic with a pair of aviators on and the music up.

i 2nd that(no aviators tho, just armani's for me)
this summer will be different, e46 m3 sports seats in cornsilk nappa leather instead of the OE siver/grey combo.
e46 seats sit lower than e36 versions so i will look like i've taken my dads car out or something, new sounds with screen in an e46 dash.
summers are short in the uk so you have to enjoy them to the max
especially the warm, early evenings

I agree for the most part, but in colder climates like here for example the top down weather starts in March...mid day if its sunny out...the windows up when the top is down is necessary for colder days...and of course a windscreen....this adds about a month on each end of the season for top down days....the last top down day I had in 2006 was November 5th...tis why I love the west coast....almost no snow...WTF happened this yr?.....I guess I never considered the perception of windows up....trust me...no one wants the windows up...its a necessary evil.

Yea up in BC you guys usually get colder weather than here 120 miles to your south. I will be cruising up there this summer though!! last day I had the top down was in December sometime.

Well I don't mind it for right now since I put my car out of commission for the winter. However I have had almost enough of this dark and shitty weather.

Historically it has never been this cold here for so long in Vancouver and we mostly just get rain. This year has been odd. Global Warming my ass!

my Ms. BMW answer,

well, i am currently working on building me business and i feel the BMW makes me focus on whats important in life. LOL

Well when i drive i usually am low key considering my head unit (aftermarket) sux azz and i the vert doesnt look anywhere near what it should. Great thing its winter time in Houston. Paint, Rims and m3 conversion should be complete by summer time.

Like someone else already wrote, the car itself attracts enough attention and my red over tan one in particular it seems as there are so many silver and black ones around. Nuthin' wrong with those though. I could've just as easily bought another color.

I just love having the top down for the breeze and the sunshine. Oh yeah and some mellow jazz tunes on the radio. :-)

I second that! Nothing quite like cruising slowly on a beautiful sunny day with a little Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd doing Jazz Samba (http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Samba-Stan-Getz/dp/B0000047CW?tag2=gp04-20). Absolutely my favourite top-down cruising CD. Has been for years...

Thats when the top comes down in New England. Definatly Getz or Brubeck on lazy summer drives through the winding hills of Vermont.
I let the wife drive it mostly in the summer as she enjoys going topless as much as possible. As for sitting low, I'm 7'2 and the seat is all the way down and back, top of my head is above roofline. Not many cars I fit in with comfort. E46 has more leg room for some reason tho, and so does the old Audi A8. Can't complain much I get to drive my RR HSE all winter.

Me: when the top's down:
Sink a little lower in the seat.
Chrome Air Force aviators are on.
Turn up the Nakamichi CD-45z a little bit more.
iPod in the sunglass bin is usually spinning out some Hammond organ jazz, Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Bill Doggett, etc.
Right hand draped over the steering wheel at 12 o'clock.
Left arm propped up on the door.
Drive a whole lot slower.
Enjoy the weather.
Try not to smile too much (the hardest part).

One of my favorite things about the E36 cabrios are the low low "waistline" heights. You can actually drape your arm over the door, just like a could on my '64 Thunderbird Convertible. Most new 'verts these days, the top of the door is WAY too high to enjoy like that. I see people drive those new Pontiac Solstices (or whatever they're called) and it's like only their head sticks up over the doorline. How do you see over that? It's not like driving a 'vert at all...
